View Full Version : Which full coilover system?
.\\ad .\\ax
01-31-2002, 11:37 AM
I'm going to get a full coilover system soon, just not sure which I want to get. I'm not that familiar with B+G, the Tein's have a great rep but supposedly there are problems with the front arm breaking, and H&R's also have a good rep.
I'm getting these mostly for street use and I'm looking for a good system that will give me some solid cornering ability.
I'm posting a poll and any input would be appreciated.

I would go with the H&R setup personally. Alot of the ITR guys have the H&R springs and coilovers and seem to swear by them. My friend has them on his ITR and his car handles amazingly well. Another thing about TEIN is they are all aluminum, so if your in an area that gets snow, they will rust and not be adjustable anymore.

Good point on the aluminum, I'm in Boston. Thanks for the info. I was steering toward the h&r's, but no-one seems to have them in stock.

Tein makes great products but apparently that isnt the case "yet" with the integra / RSX DC5 chassis. Ive heard from more than one person that Tein and Apexi's kit are breaking steering arms over at Japan. Myabe it wil lbe better to go with the koni when they come out that are inserts and still have the factory arms. Just my opinion. But for now I would stay away from Tein until they make a fix for their kit.
By the way, aluminum doesn't rust, it oxidizes. Steel will rust. I've heard the same thing about the Teins rusting and I believe it's the steels threads that are seizing. It doesn't mean you have to stay away from them, just put on a lot of anti-seize compound.

I would definetly stay away from ground controls. They ride like shit, and make the car handle worse. I just took mine off this weekend.

Please feel free to add to the poll - I'm interested in everyone's opionion.
In any case, turns out you can't really get any of the full coilovers just yet in the US. Lots of places list them as in stock, but after calling you find out that they "actually won't be in until the end of February". Oh well, must be patient.

um, isn't oxidizing same as rust?
cuz when you get rust on your car
it's cuz of the metal part of it getting oxidized
Yeah, I'm just being picky. Rust is the term used for steel oxidizing not aluminum. If aluminum oxidized it's aluminum oxide.

yea
heh , that's wut I thought
also, if I'm not mistaken
Aluminum oxide is hard to get rid of unless you put it in an elctrode along with this agent that promotes the reduction of it
I can't remember what it's called
I think aluminum only oxidizes easily in a powder form anyways

Check out this place, they have a group buy going on and IS the largest distibutor on the east coast and have the best prices around. They have the Tein Supersport(SS) full system as well as just the springs.

Anyone that thinks Tein sets are aluminum should qualify the statement. I asked around and the lower end models are aluminum. i.e. the NA, and SS. The HA set is steel. I just bought one so I should know. They don't break steering arms, contradicting what I've read on this board. They do have issues with seizing, but that is remedied by coating the threads with a good anti-seizing solution. Make sure to wash down the suspension if you get snow and salt in it, and you'll be fine. Just common sense.
BTW...the H&R coilover set is not adjustable, whereas the Tein HA set is fully adjustable.

do Hayames Rust?
Z4_LSVTEC
01-23-2004, 08:17 PM
Tein SS is mild steel. Tein Flex has a teflon coating. That said, every part on a coilover can be of different materials (i.e. the shocl body, the springs, the spring perch, the top mount, etc..) I don't think the H&R coilovers are out yet, are they? Also, you might want to consider Eibach coilovers. They are supposed to come out in Feb. (Not that this helps narrow down the solution). You also need to consider what you will be doing with the coilover? (AutoX, all street, etc).

how does aluminum rust?? the chemical properties of aluminum will not allow for rust.. rust can only physically occur on steel or iron? do you mean corrode or something?

oh give me a break..you just clean the threads with a steel brush and if you apply some theflon you wont have any problems..you only need about 8 pounds of tq to tighten the locking ring it's only normal that it will be hard to unlock them if you tighten them like it was a head bolt!all full coilover kit's need to be inspected from time to time..all you need to do is clean the threads like any other coilover before you adjust it..you will damage the threads if you don't clean the dirt from the threads..i put a little anti seize between the locking rings and it's never hard to unlock the rings..

No, I believe they are made out of stainless steel. There was a thread a while back that showed some rust on them but it must have been something else which is quite possible due to the fact that they were off a salvaged car.

Buddy Club is among the best for our car, from what I heard with amazing dampening rates for great handling... the only thing I think you'd need to get in addition to these are the front camber plates for the top of the coilover... otherwise I really wish I got these instead of my JIC's...

Should I go with the Progress Coilovers or the Tanabe Sustec SS Type-II coilovers?
i have nothing negative about the progress except what i've stated before. u can't beat the price.

I personally have driven on all three. I've had the tein ss-p, B+G S3, and now the H&R. In terms of handling, it would be like this:
1. H&R coilover
2. Tein SS
3. B+G
As for comfort, it goes as follows:
1. B+G
2.Tein SS
3. H&R ( because of no dampening )
I have the H&R coilovers now and I find it's the best handling out of the bunch. Now if you factor in Tein flex with custom spring rates, then it's hands down tein. But if you meant the SS then it's an ok design. I personally like these in this order:
1. B+G - all around coilover. Autoadjustable dampening. Sturdy as hell.
2. H&R - Handles the best so far to me. Build is excellent. Only reason it was second is
because of dampening adjustability.
3. Tein SS - Too many clanks. The rear spring rate seemed too low for the rsx.
Adjustable dampening is awesome. Pillowballs make steering real smooth.
This is just my opinion. If i had to change again, I'd try out the HKS Hipermax RS.

I say go with either the Megan coilovers or the BuddyClub coilover. I personally have the B&Gs, they ride great but are a little too soft in the cornering at times and don't have adjustable dampening. Tein are just over hyped and everyone I know who has owned them has sold them to get someething else because they hated them. The H&R handle great, but they are rough riding and don't have dampening controls. I say just get the Megans, they are a great all around coilover that you can set soft for the hyw and set stiff for the track with just a few clicks of the adjustment knob plus they are pretty cheap, I know people who have bought them new for about $850.

My car when imported came with fixed rate height adjustable Bilstein coilovers, with rediculously stiff springs. They were fun for a while, but the stiffness started to get on my nerves after a while(very poor road surfaces where I live) There were JDM Bilsteins, made under licence by Ennepetal;

So after a while I changed to a set of AST coilovers. These are 12 click adjustable, with inverted front dampers, and a much more friendly rate road spring.

The quality of the AST's is superb, very happy with my purchase.

I just ordered my Progress coilovers can't wait. I was deciding between the Progress and Tanabe as well. Decided that the wait was worth getting the Progress.

i would go w/ tein because of drivability in city and the name proves it all

helped to install a set of Tanabe pro-five's on my friends rsx and it rides pretty well. no noise like i have heard from tein in other forums or people worried about suspension noise. i didn't drive his car but in passenger seat i don't feel like i'm going to have kidney problems. heard that my friend takes his car to the track now and absolutely loves his ssp.

if you're DDing this, i'd go with A-spec coilovers. everything else is gonna be really really tight, and clunky over bumps. even Mugen SS is pretty stiff. A-spec is too, but it's an OEM (kind of) option...
