About two years ago, I spoke to the head mechanic of a local fast lube shop. He said that some people are using Mobil 1 synthetic twice as long as conventional oil but instead they still change the filter as frequently as they do with conventional oil. The mechanic said that although the synthetic oil is a lot better (thus you can use it twice as long) the filters still need to be changed regularly because they haven't improved the same extent. Anyone ever heard of anything like this?
Ive never heard this, my synth. gets just as dirty as any other kind of oil and thats more of what im worried about, more so than breakdown at least.
BTW, how would change the filter short of bleeding a lot of the oil from the engine?

synthetic oil won't last longer than regular, it just provide better protection. Also, how could you change the filter without changing the oil. Once u loose the filter, oil will leak from that hole.

If you wait for the motor to cool all the way down (like overnight) there will only be a small portion of oil left in the filter. The rest of the oil will be in the oil pan, and you do not have to worry about it leaking up!
That being said, If you are going to take the time to change the filter, why not just go the full 9 and change the oil?
Your choice.
