The manual says to change the oil every 10,000 miles. One dealer said 10,000 but another dealer said 3,500 miles. I guess I believe the manual but the one dealer says it sould be done sooner. Is he trying to rip me off or do you agree? I want to baby her as much as possible so when I have to spank her, she will perform its best. What do you think? (and no I'm not a freak) you know what I mean

Follow the manual. The Honda engineers know best. Honda uses a special oil in the car when it's new to help the break-in process.

It has been suggested here that after the first scheduled oil change, switch to Mobil 1 (Full synthetic) for best results.

changing your oil every 3k miles is just a myth most oils now adays can last for 6k. its just a way for the companies to make more money. Most likely the oil in your car when you buy it has some special additives for the break in of the engine. i would leave that oil in there till at least 3k miles, than change it to mobil 1.

my dealer said get the first oil change after 3500 miles on the car...the good thing about this change is that it is free!!!! what you guys think??? but most likely they will change it to an ordinary oil right????

The search feature is a wonderful tool :D
This has been discussed recently in
Best Synthetic Motor Oil thread (http://forums.clubrsx.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1209) .
A search would probably turn up info on filters too, I remember a big discussion on the merits of K&N (?) filters.

Abel,

our owners manual says " do not change the oil before the indicated time" or words VERY close to that. I'm not being smart, but why would you feel the need to change it earlier?

I used to own a Bimmer and changed the oil every 3K miles, never had a problem with it, even took it to Vegas and it had 195K miles on it.

My dad was a mechanic, he would always do that to his old car.
Just a tradition, that, and I am kind of a perfectionist...

If you look in your Manual, it says you can wait till 5K miles to change the oil...

but the Acura dealership says they reccomend change at 3500K miles...

So i would trust the dealerships, since they are the ones doing the work on the cars.

P.s. Where can I get Amsoil...?

The manual does not say 5,000. It says 10,000, twice the amount that the dealer wants recomends to change. I dont know when to change it because some people say there is shit in the engine to help break in. I dont want to dump it out too soon. You know what I mean?;)

The manual does not say 5,000. It says 10,000
5000 for severe driving and 10000 for normal driving.
i changed my oil to mobile one synthetic. if cars come with synthetic from the factory i seriously doubt i will hurt my engine by dumping out the oil, some have also said that these engines come already broken in from the factory:confused: i have synthetic now and will stay synthetic every 3-5k miles.

i recommend changing between 3000-5000 miles, i personally think 10,000 miles is just insane especially when you are driving the car real hard. my friend has 90 integra with 190 k on there and changes the oil religiously and the car runs like a champ. i think the $25 for an oil change is excellent insurance for the car in the long run.

If you want to find out if your motor will leak, use royal puple. It is soooooo thin that it will leak out of almost any motor. I paid big $$$ for it, used it, noticed no difference, and all of it leaked out! Royal purple sucks! Castrol GTX non-synthetic is a great oil to use. If synthetic is your game go with that, but i'd recomend saving your money!

Good luck!

Well I just spoke to 3 different Acura dealerships in the Northern Illinois area and I would have to say I'm starting to agree with them.

They won't take an appointment to change my oil because the service states that the first one is after 5000 miles due to the oil additive to break the engine in. After that it's 10000 miles and then the oil filter gets changed.

I would tend to follow their directions because if I ever have to get involved in a lawsuit or otherwise my statement of "I followed your directions and guidelines" protects my investment

Personally I wouldn't go over 5000. But it's your motor so do what you want.

The manual states 10k or 1 year whichever comes first for normal driving conditions, and 5k or 6 months whichever comes first for severe driving conditions.

I baby my car and drive like an old man(switch at 2k), but since I do a lot of city driving with tons of stopping and going, I think the 5k interval is fine for me. My daily commute is pretty close to, so I'm not exactly racking on the miles. 10k seems a little too long and 3k seems like a waste. Also since I don't have a Type S, nor beat the shit ouf of my car I'm using Mobil Clean 5000 (non synthetic).

I just go by oil analysis results after I get a set baseline.

woah what's with the 5 year old bump?

As if it wasn't covered enough, oil changes depend on your driving conditions. If you sit at idle all day, you get 0 miles but that doesn't mean your oil doesn't break down or get contaminated. Only way to know for sure is via an oil analysis. The manual is a generic time table under generic conditions but oils these days are engineered well enough to last a very long time...

http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/oil-life.html read this, mobil 1 lasted the tester 18 k miles. 3K oil change is just a myth, and motor oil has improved. Mobil 1 EP lasts 15k. Check out this thread http://forums.clubrsx.com/showthread.php?t=145702&highlight=oil+analysis

It all depends on the level of severe service you put your engine through. When I dump my Mobile 1 between 3500 - 4000 miles it quite obviously needs to be changed, but my supercharged engine at 11psi with no intercooler is like a blast furnace.

Damn dude....did you find the oldest thread on the site?

Anyway Mobil 1 is shitty. It burns and is black as night within 1k miles. Amsoil FTMFW.

Color of oil does not mean anything. If you compare basestock to basestock amosil and mobil 1 are VERY close.

And this is from an Amsoil user for 15 years.
