View Full Version : Poll: Which brake pads are best? Considering dust, stopping power, etc.
ANACC2NV

I myself use EBC Greenstuff brake pads, which perform quite well, but leave a little bit more dust than I'd like to see. Here are all of the types of pads for the RSX which I am aware of:
Vote away based on stopping power, appearance, dust, price, and quality!

Can't wait to see the votes on this one.. Pads are such a mystery..

This is somewhat of a bogus poll. Depends on what you're using the pads for, as all manufacturers are different. Also, several different pad compounds are available from each. For example, for strictly light duty (street) use, I'd say the EBC Greens: low dust, low noise, high coefficient of friction. However, they are awful on the track.
Track use? Porterfield R4S pads are great, with the R4 being a good track only pad. My next event, however, is going to be a test of Carbotech Panther+ pads.
I'll submit my vote for street use, since that's what 90% of you all are using the car for anyway.

I think it's not exactly bogus... It's just a tough question to satisfy! But we are definitely talking street use here, so Greenstuff is in question -- not Redstuff, etc.
Peace,

I think Carbotech XP is one of the best out there, but if you don't use R compound tires then it is useless.

Stopping power from your brakes won't do you much good if your tires can't stop too!! ;)

The brakes will stop the wheels, but if your tires sux, the car will still move. So upgrade your tires first before your brakes.

Can we add Axxis MetalMasters to the poll?
And I agree - let's limit the poll to aggressive street use only. Too many variables if we're talking street/track or track pads.

Which to choose?
EBC - COF=.46 - $69f/$79r
Panther XP COF= .58-.60 $139f/$108r
PorterField = N/A for Type S Front pads, Rear only?????
FYI: i'm looking for street stuff - good inital (cold) braking without lockup. I don't care about fade.

EBC greenstuff is better for street, Panther XP is for track use, you'll get plenty noise from it. And if you want cold braking Panther Plus is better than XP.
I'll install panther plus tomorrow, and i'll let you guys know how it performs.

It all depends on what you will be doing with your car. Whether you are going to autocross, circuit, or just street.
Porterfields, although many people love them, our experience with them both on customers' cars and on our race Integra Type R's have been quite poor. They fade easily and wear out rotors fast. Comparing them to Endless and Ferodo, our race drivers said they were garbage.
Hawk make pretty good pads. They have strong bite. Their drawback though is they dust a lot and don't have a progressive braking power curve. If you were to graph their braking power, it would be more of a horizontal line than a sloping linear line. That's fine if you always like instant bite, but for braking modulation and just city driving, it's not very friendly.
Endless offers a wider range of pads than most companies so you have a lot of choice in what kind of pad you can get. With the exception of the race only pads, Endless pads don't dust very much and offer a very progressive braking power curve. Personally, I'm using Endless CCM pads. They dust far less than my old Hawk pads and have much more braking power. Plus, the braking power/feel is much more progressive. Before, with the Hawk pads, just tapping on the brake would cause the car's occupants to jerk forward. With the Endless, it's much smoother and more comfortable for daily driving.
Hope this helps.

I have no personal experience with EBC. From what I have heard from customers and others on the net is that they are really just a street pad and don't cut it on the track.
Carbotech pads are highly regarded but I don't have enough experience with them to pass judgement.

Well, all I was looking for was street pads with less dust and at least better than stock performance. Greenstuff seemed to fit that bill nicely.
I think their next step up is also good for both street/track usage!
Thanks again Spikey!

I like Axxis Ultimates for the street...very dust and squeal friendly, but streetable, just like when talking about engines, is personally defined. Each person withstands their own level of dust and noise and considers that pad streetable/street-friendly. for the track, I used Carbotech...but alas, no mo track car...argh!

yeah that is what I heard that the EBC greenstuff sucks for the track and autox... basically just for street... this was coming from my friend who used it on his 240sx and autoxin..

I use the Ferodo DS2500's front and back from Raceshopper.com. Way better than stock, but with a bit more dust. Not too bad though, and well worth it for the improved performance. I hear that they're hard to get now, though.
Good luck.

I used the Porterfield R4-S my first couple of track days. You're right, they can't take the heat. They end up melting onto the rotors.
I like the Hawk HP+. The intitial bite is staggering. Really like it on the track, but it does take time to get used to. Noisy though and very dusty.
The Cobalt Friction GT Sports were good. Less initial bite but good heat range. Noisy and dusty and although better than the Porterfield's, not up to a hard track day.
For street, I'm using the Ferodo DS 2500. Very little noise, little dusting, and good bite and heat for streets and canyons.
Haven't tried the Endless pads. Which one's are good for a track day that you can drive to and from the track with?

I have used HP+ on the track , not bad, (the price is alot cheaper then ENDLESS)
recently i have been using ENDLESS CC-R on the track, a bit better then the HP+, 10m more, and i been able to do 3-4 more lap then the HP+ without feeling a bit faded
Im convinced to buy ENDLESS CC-R on track, even on the street, the endless doesnt make 1/2 as much noise as the HP+, brake dust... both are bad but then, who cares when u can stop :p

Before I was always a fan of Axxis/PBR MM and Ultimates, but on my last set of ultimates, they would fade extreamly easily (1.5 spirited runs through a canyon would do them in completely useless). Since then, I have switched to Project Mu Titan Kai pads and I couldn't be happier.

If you send Porterfield a backing plate (From worn out pads) they can put what ever compound you want back on them...(the R4, R4s or one of their endurance compounds)
I like the porterfield R4s, ran them on the street, and though they dont have the highest COF, they do give you great modulation (Because you are using more pedal travel) Some times having a High COF can be a bad thing. as it makes Pedal modulation a bit tougher.

Project Mu Titan Kai is a decent pad, but i have been on the track against it (same car, almost equal drivers) I was able to brake 5 m later then the Titan Kai, on the other hand Project Mu 777 is an amazing track pad , can outbrake me by 10 m , i cant wait to try ENDLESS MA-45 against 777, i think it will be intresting.. :)
