which ones do my Gorilla lug nuts fall under

had gorilla on my previous car. the nice chrome-like finish peeled off after a year or so. then i broke the key the day i had to take off the wheels to sell them. i contacted gorilla, after spending hours on the phone with them (no joke) i spoke to the owner as well as 5-6 different people about getting a replacement key and NOT A SINGLE PERSON could understand that i did not have a lock, just a set of tuner lug nuts. every single one of them told me that i need to send them $40 or so and a serial number off the locking set of lug nuts. after educating them on their own product line i was guaranteed that if i buy another set of tuner lug nuts the key would not work because they change the design every so often.
i ended up just buying another set and the key worked fine for my old set.
i will NEVER buy another gorilla product again. needless to say, i do not recommend them to anyone else.

its difficult to judge lug nut quality if most people dont try many of them

suprpwr
02-21-2005, 08:08 AM
Yeh, from my experience, Kyokugen (which I thought was really popular) isn't that good of quality. The keys are definitely soft and I think, the lugs are prone to rusting. Either way, I won't use them again. Judging from the response, I'll probably get some Rays.

although i've had no problems with two sets of kyokugen lugnuts, chrome and black, i finally shelled out the money for some RAYS black lugnuts. i wasted money dicking around with the kyokugens. i should've just gotten the rays from the beginning. anybody thinking of buying lugnuts should just get the RAYS.

they're not bad and they're light and hollow for those who are running long wheel studs, cheaper than RAYS and "gay-d-m"

ive talked to lots of people that say rays are too soft, since they are made of aluminum. ive heard they will rust the studs (or whatever) eventually because they are aluminum and that they strip easy. do you all like them cause they say rays on them?

I think the problem is that all aluminium lug nuts are soft. :dontknow:
I'm currently using Team Dynamics lightweight lug nuts in black and its made of aluminium too. The black paint has peeled off slightly after a couple of days.
A friend of mine who is using Spoon lug nuts is also suffering from the same problem and complained that they're too soft. :(

Some motorsport teams will say aluminium lug nuts are consumables which means you'll have to change them once they're worn out.

I guest if you want top of the range lightweight lug nuts is to get T1R titanium ones but they cost SUPER DUPA MEGA $$$$$

One good thing about softer lug nuts is that they're less likely to damage the stud bolts...

Just gotta decide what you want to break. For example, snowboarders have recommended using brass screws to secure bindings to boards; that way if something strips, it'll just be a cheap screw and not a potentially board-ruining pulled insert.

McGard makes chrome/steel lug nuts that are guaranteed not to rust or peel. Called "Tough Nuts". Their locking nuts are probably the finest made as well. This is what I'll always buy. Also, they now have spline-drive nuts and aluminum nuts. Check them out: http://www.mcgard.com/default2.asp

Ghey question, but it's been eating at me since I haven't had OEM wheels forever: Do the 60-degree (?) tapered base ones we all use on our tuner rims work on OEM wheels? Or, is it a different type of taper or something. Just driving me nuts, that's all. Thx in advance.

Nope, they won't work.

That's a lot of pressure on such a small area. It needs as exact of a fit as possible.

el78704
10-05-2006, 12:46 AM
I see... I do recall them being somewhat tapered, though, and not completely flat. The reason I ask is that I might be going back to an OEM wheel and am trying to see what options there are aside from the factory acorns, because I have longer studs up front. Make sense?

BarracksSi
10-05-2006, 01:00 AM
Ah...

I have seen open-ended lug nuts with the rounded OEM "ball seat" taper. I once got one at an Autozone to replace one that had fallen off (not a pleasant sound on the interstate!).

Either that or go back to shorter lug studs..

the weight difference is stupid.
you will not feel the difference at all. its all at the center of the wheel where it dont really matter at all.
i have rays lugs but i only use it on my nice wheels.

the regular wheels or track wheels i'll use the mcguard spline drives.
very nice lugs very strong and the bottom taper seat is seperate from the lug so you get a more accurate torque. you also wont have to worry about messing up the nice pant when you take the wheels on and off.

the black rays lugs seems to be easier to chip then the others. the blue tends to fade over time to a teal color
red tends to fade to a pink over time.
koyokugen lugs or as most people call them stripyougens the key will start to strip when you take the lugs on and off a alot

the black rays lugs seems to be easier to chip then the others. the blue tends to fade over time to a teal color
red tends to fade to a pink over time.
koyokugen lugs or as most people call them stripyougens the key will start to strip when you take the lugs on and off a alot
It will when you add the weight up of all your old lugs vs the new. Every pound counts for the people trying to shave weight. If you add up all the DOESNT make a difference pounds you lose an put them all on a scale you can have a nice little number

Anyway I have T1rs on my supra. When I get my volks I will be using those for the rsx S as well. Sorry for the bump on the thread big cam I saw someone already posted. I figured screw it why not.

Actually, in that pic, the black looks really good to me.

After dropping off my 4-lug axles, knuckles, and front brakes to a friend who's going back to stock, I'm fairly convinced that even half-weight lug nuts won't make a lick of difference. If you've stripped the interior down to the metal, drilled out nonessential frame parts, ditched the sunroof, and are left with a single racing seat and rules-mandated dashboard, then it makes sense to use lightweight lug nuts.

The rest of the time, I'd rather use lug nuts that, for example, don't make me worry if a shop uses air tools.

There are no "Volk" lugs.

Rays Eng. makes Volk, so usually Volk owners go with Rays lugs.

FYI: I'd bet money that it's only one company that's making these open-ended Al lugs that have the knurled end. My Buddy Club's look identical to yours and to the Spoons, as well. These things are probably pretty cheap to manufacture and it would make more sense for each of the various companies to source them out from a common supplier, then have their logo silkscreened on (as is the case with yours and mine). On small parts like this, that's a common practice in the manufacturing industry. My company does it all the time. Nice lugs, in any event.

Oh, one quick thing: RE-TORQUE THESE ALUMINUM LUG NUTS AFTER 24 HOURS. I was shocked at how much they move around from when I first put them on. I always re-check the next afternoon, now.

They have the outer section that is threaded and makes contact with the lug wrench, and a seat that rotates freely while it contacts the wheel itself. The idea is to not dig into the finish of the wheel paint in the lug holes. Also, it should give a more consistent torque reading, although I wonder how wise that is since torque recommendations are made with standard one-piece lug nuts in mind.

McGard makes two-piece nuts, too -- I think their spline drives are built that way.

Mmmmm..

http://rzoops.com/media/2007/05/kics-neochro-lugs-full-1.jpg

Lots of people will obviously say they are a waste of money.. let me explain why I personally bought them and why they can be an excellent choice.

- Most lug nuts, especially colored ones, fade easily. Even the Rays. The Kics never will. Rainbow lug nuts > baby blue or pink Rays

- Most will chip/scratch easily, even the high end brands. That's cool if you have a show car, but most of us do not. And for those of us who track our cars, and take lug nuts on/off countless times per weekend, it's important to have something that won't look like junk after a few track days like that.

I had a demo Kics lug nut before I bought the real set, and we just had to test their claims. We took it out to both asphalt and concrete, threw it down as hard as we could, DRAGGED the lug nut across the ground, and ran over it with a car (for good measure :P). It still sits on my desk, and looks perfect except for a few nearly invisible scratches on the edge.

- They won't strip your studs, loosen up when heated, or warp under extreme conditions. I've personally seen the Skunk2 lug nuts had their threads warped by OEM studs. I'm sure some grade 18 ARP wheel studs would rip apart most cheap lug nuts. The unique seat of the Kics also ensures a better, tighter fit against the wheel, without leaving any sort of indentation.

Personal experience: I've daily driven with these, ran them at VIR, and autocrossed a bunch. Probably have taken them on/off 25 times total so far. Still look like they just came fresh out of the box.

   to Kics. Well worth the money for someone who wants to avoid the shortcomings of most lug nuts. In my opinion, either buy the cheapest you can (ie: Gorilla/Muteki) or go all out with the Kics. Not worth spending $100-$120 on Rays, Work, 5zigen, etc. Only downside to the Kics will obviously be the price. Don't!!! pay retail, you can find them much cheaper. You just need to wait for someone to get them in stock ;)

I seen your reasoning, my buddy just got these lug nuts. But I disagree with you on a few points.

If you get extended lug nuts, you won't see the scratches really. The extended part will be perfect, just the inner part where the socket comes in contact will scratch it up.

Even though it's titanium burned finish, it will fade over time. It's like those titanium burnt shift knobs people have here. They will brown over time and lose the rainbow colour that you love.

But yea, they are definately more durable than Rays and other brands. They also look stunning in person. I also agree with you on the last few points.

You have nothing to worry about if you still have stock studs in your hubs. You'll probably need an extended socket, though. I'll bet that the key's hex head is the same size that you'll need for the other nuts, too.

I guess well see in time. Project Kics are nice but i personally could care less about lug nuts...i wanted black ones anyway. I picked up the Muteki short closed end in anodized black and it hasnt chipped...surprising. My friend also picked up a set of Mutekis in anodized blue and they chipped the first day he put them on. I've got Bull Lock lugs, and yes, their key is specific to your set of locks (not an infinite number of combinations, of course, but plenty enough).

Sell your Rays and get a set of Bull Locks combined with Hasegawa steel lug nuts. They look almost identical to each other, the Bull Lock key fits the Hasegawa "key" (really just a steel 17 mm socket extension) like it was made for it, and they're sturdy enough that you won't have to worry about a tire shop knucklehead stripping them.

muteki is hard to beat in relation to construction and price, which was what the poll was based off of, if i had to pick out of all of them, i'd go with spoons. they are very light, and have a nice finish, but aren't cheap.

i have buddy club, kics project mu, desmond lugnuts, and muteki nuts.

all are very nice, imo. best bang for the buck is the muteki's though.

Dawrenn, Muteki lugs will fit the 77w's. The RAYS lugs will not fit they are flared out to much at the bottom of the lug and will not fit in the lug hole.

I either want these if they'll fit: http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/twincamtech/0000chromeneonlugs.jpg or the closed end ones in blue.

just make sure you ask and ask about fitment before you buy them from the merchant and know their return policy

im very happy with my muteki extended lugs...i they look practically the same as black rays extended and they seem less prone to scratches then my rays were

I'm pretty happy with my standard Muteki open-ended lug nuts... The paint/whatever has held up quite well to abuse. The key is high quality. Discrete lug nuts FTW.

Can't say I am a fan of the long bright-colored ones sticking 2 inches outta the wheel...

need some help! been out the game for awhile so dont know what to get...

have some le28n on pwp (celly pic below) with some rusted chrome lugs. thinking of getting some chromes again or maybe even something different like a dark bronze. looking to spend $80-$120 more or less. preferably extended lugs or whatever looks best. what would be a good combo?!?

Mismatched, multiple sets.

Of course, if they really want your rims, they'll smash into the car and find all the keys, but not all thieves are going to go that far.
