View Full Version : Cleaning the headliner / roof / ceiling

Has anyone tried to clean their ceiling? I just noticed today some dirty finger prints/hand marks on the inside, right above the passenger door. I know it's bound to happen with people getting in and out of the car. The fabric that the ceiling is made out of is sorta like cloth...but not really. I don't know... I don't want to make it worse (or stain it) by rubbing it in with something. Any ideas?????

Hi There

Cleaning a headliner requires special attention as not to damage the foam backing or delaminate the "water based" glue used on most automitive headliners. Look over the following link for tips to properly clean a headliner: http://www.goodspeedmotoring.com/?page=interiortrim

I used Aerosol window cleaner, but It may not be the best thing. What ever you do, don't rub the fabric, dab it, because the fabric will "fuzz up". If that happens a clothes shaver will remove the fuzz. Move the shaver in random directions over the fuzz. It got rid of all the fuzz on my headliner.

Is it soiled or anything? I just vacuum it with a soft bristle brush...

Just soil or stains? Tuff Stuff (can be found at Walmart) can be used on the interior cloth, just test it in a "hidden" area first.

just use microfiber towels for your interior.....cleans up great and doesnt leave lint

Quit, it's a disgusting habit. lol jp

Seriously, I've cleaned mine with a simple carpet cleaner, forget which one I used, but it worked real good. I find most of the dirt and grime comes from leaving the sunroof opened.

Try Oxyclean. It's supposed to take out organic stains but I'm not sure if cigarette smoke counts as "organic" (wine stains, grass stains, etc). It's worth a try though. Just mix some with water in a spray bottle and let it soak into the headliner

Seems like the edges of my roof on my Type-S (don't think the roof is any different base?) near the doors are getting dirtier.

Although I don't grab them and they were like that when I bought the car, I would still like to make it as clean as possible.

I have tried cleaning the roof with a liquid vacuum thingy for carpets but that didn't help much as it sprayed water/soap everywhere. In addition, the way the roof is shaped it didn't allow the vacuum part to do its job fully.

Was wondering if you guys had any tips?

I think if I scrub it, it will thread out and look abused.

50-50 mix (water and Woolite or any delicate fabric detergent) and use a toothbrush to clean. That always works for me on any fabric and carpet stains. Use a water damped towel to clean up the foam after brushing the cleaning solution through.

Yea the headliner.

Not sure about cleaning products but try not to scrub the headliner. The material may "fray."

I can't remember what the material is right now. Is it fabric or like a vinyl? If it is nonporous, just use a damp cloth and a mild all purpose cleaner. Why is it dirty anyways? Does everybody's head rub against it? Do you smoke? I got it, just tell your girl to keep her feet down when you a fuckin in the back seat.

I heard if you used a mixture of woolite and warm water with some microfiber it helps... but don't quote me. (also... I would use an old MF cloth because I would assume that material will mess up the MF)

I usually just take a soft bristle vacuum to it and I'm done with it. But once there was a brown line when I had a big box in the back and it rubbed against the headliner, I just used a damp microfiber towel and rubbed it off.

Slightly damp cloth with a mild soap is all I use.

You don't want to put on a dripping wet rag since it'll probably soak up.

I was in my car the other day and was putting something in my back seat when i noticed the ceiling inside my car is nasty as shit. Likely comes from 40k+ miles of driving with thie windows open and all of FL's lovely buggies. Anyway here are some pictures, looks gross...I'd be embarrased if someone came in my car and was like wtf. What should I try to clean it with?

i would try using some carpet cleaner and a damp microfiber first. Folex is good stuff for the bad stains, or you can buy some regular bissel stuff that you dilute with water to use with carpet cleaners, that would work well.

I agree with Adam the water/woolite mixture will work great. I'd even use warm water. My ceiling is kinda dirty, although not as bad as yours and I started with the water/woolite mixture, it works good. If you don't believe me check out these before and afters of a member on Autopia.
A little time and effort and you'll get it perfect, no sense in paying a lot of money for a professional to do it. :)
