View Full Version : "The Departed" remake of asian movie "Infernal Affair"
http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1808745378/details
This movie is coming out in 10/06/2006, it look pretty good
'The Departed' is set in South Boston, where the state police force is waging war on organized crime. Young undercover cop Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is assigned to infiltrate the mob syndicate run by gangland chief Costello (Jack Nicholson). While Billy is quickly gaining Costello's confidence, Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon), a hardened young criminal who has infiltrated the police department as an informer for the syndicate, is rising to a position of power in the Special Investigation Unit. Each man becomes deeply consumed by his double life, gathering information about the plans and counter-plans of the operations he has penetrated. But when it becomes clear to both the gangsters and the police that there's a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin are suddenly in danger of being caught and exposed to the enemy -- and each must race to uncover the identity of the other man in time to save himself.

I hope they don't mess it up. The aura of the movie looks completely different from the original. Here's a link btw: http://imdb.com/title/tt0338564/
The first movie cover is almost completely irrelevant to the movie. They just put the girl there to appeal to the US audience. I highly suggest you guys watch the original HK version, and the 2 sequels if you have time. The sequels aren't as great but it adds to, and explains some parts of the original.

i agree originality is a problem in hollywood, and it is sad to see a 4 year old movie already remade, but what are you gonna do....
i'll see this movie regardless because i rarely ever go to the movies (maybe twice a year) and im sure it will be well worth it....

yah HK one has more of a gangster feel to it. The development of the mole is more believable too (they start as young kids). the american one was good, but i think i would've liked it more if i didnt watch infernal affairs first.
The part I hate most is, why would they share the same women?? That part was completely dumb. The HK film they each have their own pussy. The US one for some totally unbelieveable reason, they fucked the same girl. That made the plot very confusing, and the female character had no clue what she was doing. The sex scene was out of no where.
The "gang" was pretty dumb too, it consisted of a group of really dumb people it seems. The boss was a crazy brainless penis swinging mofo. The members were all muscle meat heads. The balance of power between cops and evil seem very uneven, because the cops seem very smart and originized.
In the HK film, you could totally feel a war between good and evil, and no side was out smarting the other. Like the scene where they had the drug deal inside the building, each side was listening to the other side's communication through their "rat", and they changed their plans right on the spot, like a little chess game. That was intense! The US film........was dumb, the scene ended with the cop beating up the computer nerd because he didn't set up the camera correct. The cops couldn't see what was going on because of the "blind spot" so the bad guys were able to carry on with the drug deal, whats so entertaining about that? The plot was just not creative. That was supposed to be one of the best scene in the HK film and it was ruined.
The best part of US one was the ending. Each cop got a bullet in his head, it happened so fast it makes you think what the hell was going on, but if you think about it, each shot makes sense. That was intense. POW right on the head, done. Clean and heartless.

Yeah, i hate how they put sammi cheng's, and kelly chen's characters into one role, i thought it was pretty pointless. The sex scene was typical of hollywood, it was unecessary, only in the US.
I also agree with the part about the drug deal, it just wasn't suspensful enough. In the HK one you could feel the escalation and anxiety. Also, wtf was up with those Chinese people? Their cantonese was horrible, why couldn't they find people that spoke fluent cantonese? Also, those chose the wrong kind of Chinese, people in southern China don't really care about the situation about taiwan, they should have found people that spoke mandarin, maybe from Beijing?? The whole part with the Chinese and the chips was retarded, they also showed that the chips were made in Taiwan -_-. Oh yeah lets thank the chinese for selling us the movie script by turning them into the bad guys and messing the whole scene up.

I didn't see the HK film, so can't comment on the comparisons to Departed.
I thought Departed was very good. Well told, well acted. An interesting take on the whole Spy vs. Spy game: Is it a game you lose just by playing in the first place?
Yeah, the 2 guys 1 chick thing was sort of silly . . . But I DIG her eyes :o
The sex scenes didn't add anything, typical Hollywood.
Departed is worth seeing. Probably better than 90% of films that came out this year.
I'll have to check out the HK film sometime.

Hmm... I don't think that was the point of the film.
What I personally got out of it is that they were all (most of them) informants working against each other. It wasn't communicated to them all so none of them knew. Jack Nicolson was an FBI informant, Leo (trooper informant), etc... spy vs spy as mentioned. I think they all got caught up in some other stuff and was trying to protect both their undercover identity and their 'cop' identity.
But I dunno, I'm babbling.

Yeah, WTF was a small town drug lord with only 8-10 followers doing trading warfare weapon with China???? Dude! They are only a small time neigborhood gang with only 8-10 members!!! WTF? When did they start from beating up local bullies and collecting protection money from corner stores to selling weapons to China???? Made no sense at all.
they should use infernal affair secret morse code instead of text messages on the cell, but overall the movie was great  but yeah if you already watch infernal affair, then this movie is already a spoiler. I guess no part 2 or 3 :D

just saw it, movie was freakin incredible....on the same level as infernal affairs but at the same time kind of different....
i actually like the love triangle angle that they took....it helped give closure to the story IMO....without them sharing the girl damon would have lived and you would have been left with a lot of, "what now's"....the sex scene was not really necessary, but it was there just to show that the girl trusted leo, and i wouldnt even call it a sex scene, it was like 20 seconds long....
someone mentioned that the deal with china was outrageous because they were too small time....while they might seem small time in comparison to china's govt, they had the goods, so as they say, he who has the gold makes the rules....also, nicholson was a boss, and as it seemed, a pretty powerful one....he had power enough to stop the guys from providence from killing leo, and as far as organized crime in the US, providence is/was pretty much the mecca of the mob....
the depiction of the gangster is more real than most movies, as mentioned earlier, dumb meatheads, thats pretty much what they really are, otherwise they'd have safer jobs....donnie brasco is the only other movie i can think of that really shows organized crime in the same light (and coincidentally, its based on actual events)....
overall, its the best movie ive seen in a long time and i will most defnitely be adding it to my dvd collection when it comes out....

One problem with most American movies is that they are made for American viewers. That is to say that everything has to be extremely obvious, so obvious that one can leave one's brain in the car.
The Chinese/Chip/FBI thing was a bit subtle, but not so subtle that it was hiding, so the weapon trading with China makes some sense if you connect the follwoing dots:
We don't see one of his goons steal the chips; it is told to us in the briefing. Are we supposed to believe it is the true story, or just the cover story?
The cops don't trust the FBI guy for some reason.
When the Chinese are leaving in the boat, Jack says "They didn't count on us having a navy." Sort of an odd comment, but it makes sense later.
Our man learns that Jack is a rat for the FBI.
Later we learn that the Chinese got busted . . . by that navy Jack mentioned before . . . and they had fake chips, not real chips.
Real chips were probably never stolen. Good fakes were probably passed to Jack by the FBI along with the whole stolen chip cover story (where would a goon like Jack get fake chips on his own anyway)? The FBI busts the Chinese and saves the world from these guys who are trying to get parts for nuke weapons.
LOL All that considered, one of the best scenes in the movie has to be the "Do you want to be me?" conversation, since our man was on his way to being Jack: A goon that busted heads and killed people for money and style points, but who also did his part to bust those doing even worse things.

*spoiler alert*
Amazed that so many ppl thought highly of this film. Don’t get me wrong, I thought it was good and better than Infernal Affairs (even though I saw the HK film 1st), but 5/5 stars? I gave it a 3 because the original story to begin w/ was just alright. I think the original was overrated to begin w/. Anyways, the US one was generally better than the HK one because Hollywood simply cannot be matched in production. However, I was surprised that there were actually some scenes in which the HK one were superior.
What I liked about The Departed:
-Mark Walhberg was pretty cool; hard-ass but straightshooter; nice Hollywood touch to invent this character, flowed w/ the film and was essential for the superior Hollywood ending; DiCaprio, Damon, Nicholson, Baldwin, Sheen were all good also
-more background on the 2 main characters and Nicholson’s
-generally better flow than original
What I hated about The Departed:
-like the HK film, the psychiatrist role was quite useless; well, at least they merged the Damon’s girl w/ her into 1 role to lessen the impact; also, dunno what you guys are thinking but she is NOT really that attractive; finally, the sex between her and DiCaprio was really pushing it, doesn’t make much sense
-the whole ‘trade’ scene between Nicholson’s crew and the other baddies involving the cellphones was really messed up, no suspense at all
-half-hearted approach to retain the ‘comical’ gangster guy in Nicholson’s crew
-the African guy did NOT belong at all in the film; he’s usually in comedies and just sticks out like a sore thumb here trying to be in a dramatic role; doesn’t work
-the 2nd mole in the police was annoying here also (but the HK one was more annoying)
-Sheen’s character didn’t put up much of a fight before dying
• -rooftop scene between the 2 mains looked ‘cheap’ and amateurish

Often the translations ruin the film, little double entendres and nuances that you can only understand if you are native to the language. Example the scene in this movie where Jack asks the guy at the bar how his mother is doing, he responds she's on the way out, and jack comes back with, we all are act accordingly. You can't translate that and have it feel the same.

i just watched the movie and thought it was very entertaining. However the main problems of the film were outlined very well on the first page.
I've seen the original (Infernal Affairs) movie which was and still is an amazing film. I loved the way that everything was played out. The only thing that I feel the US one did better was the end. The US movie ended quickly but it left just enough time for you to think.
The very worst thing that happened in the US movie was when Matt Damon's character was killed my Mark Walburg's character. Markie Mark disappears for half of the film then just randomly shows up and kills Matt Damon, THEN the film just ends. The HK movie however ended extremely well so that it could come up with a sequel. Though the sequels were not as good, they were still very entertaining movies.
BTW, when Jack Nicholson's character died. I really didn't understand his outfit. He's a mob boss and he's wearing a T-shirt that says Irish. Thats great that he has that Irish pride or what ever but I just thought that he'd at least be wearing a nice shirt, maybe even a suit.

That girl was definatly not that good looking... Cute, maybe, but they were both fuckin drooling over her, and if I saw a girl like that walking down the street, I'd not even tilt my head because she was definatly only average.
That being said, I thought the movie was good. I enjoyed it a lot. Sex scene was not needed, but shes got a good body, so, whatever.
I mostly enjoyed all the swearing and how funny all of it was.

for one, costello and his crew are irish mob, not italian, so there are going to be some differences....if my memory serves me, the two guys from providence (who leo kicked the snot out of) were dressed more like gangsters in the traditional sense, they were also italian mob....
costello is the boss of southie, a neighborhood that houses tough working class irish (not so much anymore, but thats the reputation it has/had)....so you have to look at it like, what would you expect an irish tough guy gangster to wear?

in regards to the sex part - earlier in the movie, Matt Damon was eating cereal and his g/f came in and told him that it was ok - what happened last nite happens to a lot of guys.
basically - matt damon's character is impotent. When he went out to meet alec baldwin on the golf course, he was way over exaggerating his sex life.
SO - the only place that girl could get any cock was Leo.
Which I think was thrown in there to subvertly show Leo's dominance over Matt's character.
*spoilers:
i just realized something else.
Everyone pretty much dies from a slug to the head.
in the intro, when they showed them in training classes, there was a lecturer talking about what a hollow-point 9mm does to a human skull.
foreshadowing at its best.

watched this movie tonight. I wasn't expecting much, but DAMN. this movie was great. I recommended it to all my friends. They had such great acting and plot was thick. This is the ONLY movie I enjoyed this year and I work for the cable company so Movies are my thing. 9.5/10
I loved the movie...the ending was well put together

The daughter is not Yan (Tony Leung)'s daughter. In Infernal Affairs 2, Yan's girl gets an abortion b/c supposedly she doesn't want the child's dad to be a gangster. Hence in IA1, it was primarily a scene about all the stuff he lost being a mole (like a family).

I speak english, and chinese, but i can enjoy any movie as long as it isn't dubbed. Why is it so hard to enjoy a movie of another language? People in other countries enjoy subbed american movies just fine, i wonder why americans can't enjoy foreign movies. :dontknow:
Older HK movies are dubbed because of actors from different regions of China often spoke different languages. (EX. Jet Li was active in HK film industry, yet his Cantonese is marginal at best.) In addition, as any film student knows, having "live action sound" drives up the costs exponentially....that's why dubbing to match the mouth is so important.

**SPOILERS**
in regards to the sex part - earlier in the movie, Matt Damon was eating cereal and his g/f came in and told him that it was ok - what happened last nite happens to a lot of guys.
basically - matt damon's character is impotent. When he went out to meet alec baldwin on the golf course, he was way over exaggerating his sex life.
SO - the only place that girl could get any cock was Leo.
Which I think was thrown in there to subvertly show Leo's dominance over Matt's character.
So the baby is Leo's?  :giggitygiggity:
Also why did she move in with Matt Damon if he couldn't get it up? :dontknow:
saw it tonight

oh yeah. i tested it out last night with aeon flux. a movie with some bright colors and detail. I took one of the final battle scenes (in that tree grove area).
I used my Sony HTIB DVD player, the 360 player and the HD-DVD player
Overall, my Sony was the clearest. But just slightly.
The HDDVD was actually the tiniest bit clearer than the normal 360 player. But if I wasn't looking for it, I might not have noticed it.
Interestingly enough, swapping the disk from the normal drive to the HD drive didn't cause the movie to restart. it picked up right where it left off.
So over all, they're all similar on a normal DVD, but the clarity between an HD movie and regular movie is where you see the difference.

This was a movie I didn't want to see from any of the trailers till I found out Mr.Scorsesie directed it. From the moment this movie begins you know your looking at something special. Movie has no glimmer, blown out of proportion special effects, no eye candy, ect... . It's just story telling and charecter developement at its best. You think the Italian mob is tough. Fuck, the Irish mob is no joke. I'm just pissed of at myself for not watching it earlier nor at the theater.:( I think I'm going to go get a CRANBERRY JUICE.
