In 480 BC, the Persian king Xerxes sends his massive army to conquer Greece. The Greek city of Sparta houses its finest warriors, and 300 of these soldiers are chosen to meet the Persians at Thermopylae, engaging the soldiers in a narrow canyon where they cannot take full advantage of their numbers. The battle is a suicide mission, meant to buy time for the rest of the Greek forces to prepare for the invasion. However, that doesn't stop the Spartans from throwing their hearts into the fray, determined to take as many Persians as possible with them.

I agree "300" looks amazing. I like how they are not making it look like an "inaccurate history lesson' but rather a stylish action that stays true to Frank Miller's graphic novel. It should be great in the same way of "Sin City" with some "Sparticus" mixed in.

The movie is based off a comic book. The comic book was based off the battle. Obviously it has been changed. Persian soldiers did not ride Rhino's and the battle also did not include mythological based "monsters" for example.
I am saying the movie does not pretend to be realistic. You can watch "Kingdom of Heaven", "Troy", "King Arthor", "Alexander", "Gladiator", "Sparticus". All these movies come with historical inaccuracies that are made out to be fact.
Unless you are only talking about the battle. Then yes of course the battle has been documented, but in '300' it is portrayed with fiction and mythology. This is what will make the movie so entertaining, hense "stylish action". It does not pretend to be a history lesson.

The men that brought their face to the water and put their guard down were sent home, the 300 TRUE soldiers that dipped their hands in the river and brought the water to their face while always keeping on "watch" for the enemy were the ones chosen to stay.
I'll have the whole write up on the biblical background of it with scriptures to back it up.......I"m just tired right now.

Ask and you shall receive....
“Jehovah’s Sword and Gideon’s!”THEY are as numerous as locusts, reducing fertile fields to a wasteland. It is sometime during the period when judges rule in Israel, and the Israelites are in despair. For seven years, just as sown seed has begun to sprout, plundering hordes of camel-riding Midianites, Amalekites, and Easterners descend upon the land. The marauders’ flocks spread out in search of pasturage, devouring everything green. But the people of Israel have neither ass nor bull nor sheep. So severe is Midian’s reign of terror that the poverty-stricken Israelites resort to underground storage in the mountains, the caves, and places difficult to approach.
Why such a plight? Apostate Israel is serving false gods. In turn, Jehovah has abandoned them to oppressors. When the sons of Israel can stand it no longer, they call to Jehovah for aid. Will he listen? What can Israel’s experience teach us?—Judges 6:1-6.
Cautious Farmer or “Valiant, Mighty One”?
Israelite farmers normally thresh wheat with an ox and a sledge in an exposed, airy location so that the breeze can catch the chaff and separate it from the grain in the winnowing process. But the threat posed by marauders intent on stripping the land makes that far too conspicuous. Out of sight of the Midianites, Gideon threshes wheat in a winepress—likely a large, sheltered vat carved out of rock. (Judges 6:11) There the grain can likely be beaten with a stick in small quantities only. Under the circumstances, Gideon is improvising.
Imagine Gideon’s surprise when Jehovah’s angel appears to him and says: “Jehovah is with you, you valiant, mighty one.” (Judges 6:12) As a man secretly threshing grain in a winepress, Gideon must feel anything but valiant. Yet, those words indicate divine confidence that Gideon can be a valiant leader in Israel. Even so, he himself needs to be convinced.
When Jehovah commissions him to “save Israel out of Midian’s palm,” Gideon modestly states: “Excuse me, Jehovah. With what shall I save Israel? Look! My thousand is the least in Manasseh, and I am the smallest in my father’s house.” Cautious Gideon requests a sign that God would be with him in striking down Midian, and Jehovah is willing to accommodate Gideon’s reasonable need for assurance. So Gideon presents a gift of food to his angelic visitor, and fire ascends out of a rock, consuming the offering. After Jehovah has allayed Gideon’s fright, Gideon builds an altar at that location.—Judges 6:12-24.
“Let Baal Make a Legal Defense”Israel’s biggest problem is not Midianite oppression. It is bondage to Baal worship. Jehovah is “a jealous God,” and no one can serve him acceptably while revering other gods. (Exodus 34:14) Therefore, Jehovah commands Gideon to destroy his father’s altar to Baal and to cut down the sacred pole. Fearing his father’s reaction and that of others if he does this during the day, Gideon acts at night, with the help of ten servants.
Gideon’s caution is justified, for on discovering his “sacrilege,” local Baal worshippers demand his life. With unassailable logic, however, Gideon’s father, Joash, reasons with the people that if Baal were God, he would be able to defend himself. At that, Joash aptly calls his son Jerubbaal, meaning “Let Baal Make a Legal Defense Against Him.”—Judges 6:25-32, footnote.
God always blesses his servants for taking a bold stand for true worship. When the Midianites and their allies again invade Israelite territory, ‘Jehovah’s spirit envelops Gideon.’ (Judges 6:34) Under the influence of God’s spirit, or active force, Gideon musters troops from the tribes of Manasseh, Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali.—Judges 6:35.
Preparing for Action
Although Gideon now has an army of 32,000, he asks God for a sign. If a fleece left on the threshing floor becomes wet with dew while the ground remains dry, this will indicate that God will save Israel through him. Jehovah performs this miracle, and Gideon seeks and receives confirmation when the sign is reversed—wet ground and a dry fleece. Is Gideon being overly cautious? Apparently not, for Jehovah grants his request for reassurance. (Judges 6:36-40) We do not expect such miracles today. Yet, we can receive Jehovah’s guidance and reassurance from his Word.
God now raises the point that Gideon’s army is too big. If they prevail over their enemies with such a large force, the Israelites might brag that they have saved themselves. But Jehovah must receive credit for the coming victory. The solution? Gideon is to apply a provision of the Mosaic Law by inviting the fearful to withdraw. At that, 22,000 of his men do so, leaving only 10,000.—Deuteronomy 20:8; Judges 7:2, 3.
From God’s standpoint, there are still too many men. Gideon is told to have them go down to the water. Jewish historian Josephus says that God had Gideon march his troops to a river in the heat of the day. Be that as it may, Gideon observes how the men drink. Just 300 dip one hand in the water and lap from it while watching for a possible enemy attack. Only the vigilant 300 will go with Gideon. (Judges 7:4-8) Imagine yourself in their shoes. Since your enemies number 135,000, you must surely conclude that a victory could come about only by Jehovah’s power, not your own!
God invites Gideon to take along an attendant and scout the Midianite camp. While there, Gideon overhears a man relating a dream to a companion who unhesitatingly interprets it to mean that God has determined to give Midian into Gideon’s hand. That is just what Gideon needs to hear. He is certain that Jehovah will grant him and his 300 men victory over the Midianites.—Judges 7:9-15.
Battle Strategy
The 300 are divided into three bands of 100 each. Every man is given a horn and a large empty jar. A torch is hidden in the jar. Gideon’s first order is this: ‘Watch me, and do just as I do. When I blow the horn, you blow yours and shout “Jehovah’s sword and Gideon’s!”’—Judges 7:16-18, 20.
The 300 Israelite warriors stealthily move to the edge of the enemy camp. It is about ten o’clock in the evening—just after the changing of the guard. This seems to be the opportune time to strike, for it will take a while before the eyes of the new sentries adjust to the darkness.
What terror the Midianites now experience! Suddenly, the stillness is broken by the shattering of 300 jars, the blare of 300 horns, and the shouts of 300 men. Stunned, especially by the cry “Jehovah’s sword and Gideon’s!,” the Midianites add their own cries to the din. In the chaos, it is impossible for them to tell friend from foe. The 300 stand still in their assigned positions as God causes the enemies to use their own swords to slaughter one another. The camp is routed, escape is cut off, and mop-up operations involving an arduous pursuit permanently remove the Midianite threat. The long and murderous occupation has finally come to an end.—Judges 7:19-25; 8:10-12, 28.
Even after this victory, Gideon is modest. When the Ephraimites, who apparently feel slighted at not being called for the fight, pick a quarrel with him, he responds mildly. His mild answer turns away their rage and calms their spirit.—Judges 8:1-3; Proverbs 15:1.
Now that peace has been established, the Israelites urge Gideon to become their king. What a temptation! But Gideon rejects it. He has not lost sight of who won the victory over Midian. “I myself shall not rule over you, nor will my son rule over you,” he declares. “Jehovah is the one who will rule over you.”—Judges 8:23.
Being imperfect, however, Gideon does not always exercise good judgment. For some unstated reason, he makes an ephod with the spoils of war and exhibits it in his city. The record says that all Israel begins to have “immoral intercourse” with the ephod. They worship it, and it becomes a snare even to Gideon and his household. Yet, he has not become a rank idolater, for the Scriptures reckon him a man with faith in Jehovah.—Judges 8:27; Hebrews 11:32-34.

Man, this movie looks sick!!
hmmm..after reading the trivia, I have second doubts.....but the ratings 9.0/10....well, wow, I dunno...Just look at this trivia.. THE FILM WAS SHOT IN 60 DAYS...thats 2 months. When they shot LOTR series, that was 3 years!!!! How can they make a great epic movie in only 60 days of shooting.
* The film was shot in 60 days.
* The film was shot on green screen in Montreal.
* There are 1500 cuts in the film, and about 1300 involve some sort of visual effect.
* The work was photographed completely in Montreal, with the exception of two days of insert shooting in Los Angeles.
* Ten visual effects vendors contributed to the film, spread over three continents.
* The filmmakers used bluescreen 90% of the time, and greenscreen for 10%. They chose blue because it better matched the lighting paradigm (green would have been too bright) and because red garments (a la spartan capes) look better when shot over blue.
* There was one day of location shooting, which was for the horses that were shot for the 'approaching sparta' scene.
* Post production took almost a year. The film was edited on an Avid, with an HD cut also maintained in Final Cut Pro The 3D was made using Maya, XSI, and Lightwave The 2D composites were made with Shake, Inferno, Fusion, and Combustion. The filmmakers prefer Macintosh, but large portions of the movie were made under Linux. Asset management was handled by custom software written in the Panorama development environment, made by Provue. Color management was handled by Truelight software. The film was scanned on a northlight scanner and was recorded on the arrilaser. Most of the film was shot at high speed, between 50 and 150fps. Normal film is at 24fps. The film was transferred to HD SR tape and quicktime, and HD quicktimes were the basis for the HD preview cuts. The working resolution for the film was 2K, at a working aspect ratio of 2.11 and a projected aspect ratio of 2.35.
* The script demanded that most of the male cast spend the majority of their screen time bare-chested, as per Frank Miller's original graphic novel. Therefore, in order to adequately present themselves as the most well-trained and marshalled fighting force of the time, the entire principal cast underwent a rigorous and varied training regime for 6 weeks prior to shooting.
* Sienna Miller and Silvia Colloca were each considered for the role of Queen Gorgo.
* According to an interview with IGN.com, Director Zack Snyder says that fighting styles and formations (particularly the Spartan's phalanx) were purposefully changed - making them historically inaccurate - so they'd "look cool" and work better for movie purposes.
* The movie never claims to be historically correct. It is based somewhat loosely on Frank Miller's 1998 comic book mini-series. Changes from history were made by Miller and Snyder so as to appeal to a wider audience and create a more exciting and visually stunning action movie, rather than a typical historical epic.
* Frank Miller was inspired by the original Battle of Thermopylae after viewing the 1962 film "The 300 Spartans" as a child. His perception of the 'hero' concept changed greatly after seeing the Spartans make their sacrifice.

My brother is the one that found this article/information for me......so if you have a question I may not have the answer right away....
Of course Hollywood incorporated more Greek mythology into this as it seems.......
It's not the same story, Hollywood is putting a Greek Mythology twist to it it seems...........but I'm sure they based it off the biblical story.
Nevertheless.....I'll be there opening day with a sword and red cape only....haha....
I totally remember this Bible story minus the 300 soldier count but I never thought the movie was the same story. i thought the film might have potential for suckage but now i really want to see it
wait, what does this have to do with the battle of thermopylae? it's not a biblical battle involving israelites.. this is based off a historical, actual battle that occurred during the greek/persian war

taken from imdb
Based on Frank Miller's graphic novel, "300" concerns the 480 B.C. Battle of Thermopylae, where the King of Sparta led his army against the advancing Persians; the battle is said to have inspired all of Greece to band together against the Persians, and helped usher in the world's first democracy. Written by Anonymous
In the Battle of Thermopylae of 480 BC an alliance of Greek city-states fought the invading Persian army in the mountain pass of Thermopylae. Vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held back the enemy in one of the most famous last stands of history. Persian King Xerxes lead a Army of well over 100,000 (Persian king Xerxes before war has about 170,000 army) men to Greece and was confronted by 300 Spartans, 700 Thespians and other Slave soldiers. Xerxes waited for 10 days for King Leonidas to surrender or withdraw left with no options he moved. The battle lasted for about 3 days and after which all 300 Spartans were killed. The Spartan defeat was not the one expected as a local shepherd named Ephialtes defected to the Persians and informed Xerxes of a separate path through Thermopylae, which the Persians could use to outflank the Greeks. Written by cyberian2005
Written by rmlohner

uhmm... well we learned about this in our ancient greek history class.
APPARANTLY
athens needed help fighting the persians because they were going to get wtf pwned and they really didn't want that, so sparta said ok blah blah, the 1 of the 2 kings in sparta went to the temple of apollo and got his "prediction" that says all 300 of his troops + him were going to have to die to win the war, which is exactly what happened, the king knew this so after the persians found a path threw the mountains they were going to ovfertake the greeks from the side so the athenian troops returned to athens to fight them there and the 300 spartans decided they were going to hold the front, obviously because they already knew they were going to die
i could write this alot better but im late for a class and bye

I'm going to check this movie out. Since I'm left with almost nothing else to watch coming from the MPAA recently I'll settle with this. I can only hope it lives up to my level of violence I'm expecting to see from a movie of this type. I'm sure I'll be disapointed and the MPAA will laugh all the way to the bank with my money. :(

No do not going into the theatre expecting a historically acurate, yet entertaining movie. I teach history and would love to have something like that. This movie is told in the style of greek mythology. It is based on Frank Miller's 300. He is the writer/artist who revitalized Batman in the early 90s, and created Sin City. I have the graphic novel 300 and it looks like the move will be a frame by frame copy of the graphic novel.
Which is really cool on its own.:run:  :run:

Guys come on. Lets be real for a second and put our toy spears down. It's far from being one of the best movies ever. I guess I was just expecting so much more because of the trailer. The trailer gives you chills and gets your heart rate up. No part of the movie does that. It's because they give away ALL the good parts in the trailer. It's MUCH more slowly paced than the trailer. It's a good movie but I'm now looking forward to the summer blockbusters which I think will be better.

I give it four stars. Not because the storyline was all that great or the acting was superb. The effects were nice. Maybe if the guy hadn't been telling it in a past tense form the movie would have been better. Kind of a very slow begginning. Almost felt bored. Also they definately need more mood music. The dramatic parts had no music to it. Totally opposite of the trailer. Kind of took away from the expectations you go in with.

i don't know how you can trash the music, i thought it was actually done pretty well. Like when the Spartans were about to kick some ass, the guitar rock came on, but when they went through the slow motion kick ass scenes, it was more tasteful music, almost like it was a dance you were watching.

The movie was entertaining though and only a few scenes were really dumb. I like boobs but most of the time you saw those boobies it wasn't really needed. I enjoyed the tree of people that was pretty slick. I give it a 4 just because so many people got fucking rocked and the cool animals/monsters.

Make no mistake, if you are expecting to see realism in any way shape or form you will not find it in this movie. But on the plus side this movie is BAD ASS and very entertaining. I give it 5 stars only because there was no option for 4 1/2 stars. Could this movie have been better, yes it could have. But it is way better than alexander or troy. I would compare it to gladiator, but I don't feel their in the same category.

I gave it a 5 because of the direction it took which was completely different than any other movie, I would really give it a 4.5 because of the way aspects of the movie parallel Gladiator (some of the softer scenes cinematography, the score, etc). I am also surpised they didnt focus on any of the naval aspects of it- which were a HUGE help to the 300. I did enjoy the rockish music on a couple of the scenes. Now I have an excuse to get Blu-Ray or HD-DVD.

I properly be hated, and people will say am just trying to be different. So I'll give a completely legit reason why I found this film --LAME 2.5 out of 4
2 people will actually read this, but here it is
The high contrast, over saturation and blown out whites worked well, setting the mood. That about all the good.
The acting was bad, the dialog lack any feeling, being that they were in front of a blue screen the entire time was properly the core problem. I did think it was wise to use fairly unknown actors, instead of well knows. Properly a money issue, rather anything else.
Who cares, this movie is about blood, guts and junk. Thats the problem
The battles where like a highlight reel, only small sections of the battle were seen. The camera got in so close, allowing nearly no scope to what is this epic battle was like. Slo-mo was used in one area to add to some gore but no purpose did it serve, other then to be more highlight reel like.
Then come the mutated humans and over sized animals, what went from a semi-realistic epic battle movie, turned into a horrible LOTR wannabe. Lucky that was short lived, but did nothing to add the epic that it was supposed to be. Minus the 10X too big elephants, the battles where all the exact same. Bunch of people, kill, celebrate, bunch of people, kill and celebrate. A son of a general dies, oh no. Everyone dies oh no.
The story was just some scenes in the middle of battles, very light weight stuff, nothing important. Everything is narrated, like in most cases a bad sign.
Rock music, ghey, should of stuck with the classical opera similar to the very beginning.
In Short- this was suppose to be a big epic battle movie, it lack the epic and all the intense that it should of had
LOTR kick its ass in epic battle-ness.
If anyone has seen a Kurosawa samurai movie, the battles were far more epic, better done and very intense. Were talking 50-60's here with no use of blue screen, just damn good directing
The movie is worth the price of a ticket, however I was very very disappointed, I even went in there hoping for the best.
Most people will think this the best movie ever, and give insane reviews
Clearly they havent seen a real battle movie, to know what epic really is.
BTW dont go IMAX, big screen are very bad, dont know why people think there betterr. The movie is very wide and you should be able to see the entire screen. If you have to turn your head you missing a lot

I don't know, I see them as different types of movies.
300 reminded me a lot of the movie Troy, especially the similarities between Achilles soldier's (forgot their name) and the 300 men under Leonidas.
Either way, after seeing the movie tonight.. I definitely feel I got my money's worth. The battle scenes were awesome, I just wish there was even more of them (especially in the first half)
the guys were incredibly ripped, and the way they fought was absolutely awesome.

What this tool doesn't realize is that this movie is based off a 5 part Comic Epic. So the feel of the movie, the dialog the overall surrealism of the imagery were ripped straight from Frank Millers Novel.
loco_ped
03-10-2007, 07:08 AM
Example of some shot straight out of the Comic. Sin City was like this too. The dialog is taken straight from it, so to consider it "Bad Acting" or horrible dialog is crazy considering it's taken from one medium to another, it doesn't translate the same way it would in your imagination.

Actually thats what means, gladiator is an epic but mainly focuses on one guy maximus. You can't directly compare the two, both are good. I thought 300 was more entertaining than gladiator, especially in the battle scenes.

What I thought lacked in 300 that worked well on Gladiator was the character development, I really felt like I knew Crowes character more than Leonidas. Nonetheless, both were awesome movies. Everyone stood up and clapped last night... havent seen that happen since the Matrix.

Man, you guys don't see it from a movie type perspective. You cannot compare Gladiator with 300.
Gladiator has great character development, great fighting scenes, etc.
300 is purely an art movie with emphasis on the art part and somewhat on the fighting. Much of the emphasis is on the art part.
As a normal movie, Gladiator blows 300 away. No question in my mind.
However as an art movie, 300 is far better.
It's like you guys compare Ferrari with a Lincoln Continental. Different type of cars for different purposes.
To whoever went at IMAX.
