Poll please...

Its the VHS/Betamax war all over again...soooo...who is going to win...

Vote for:

Blue Ray
HD DVD

Right now, Disney has the Blue Ray market cornered but the Adult industry has chosen HD DVD. Who will win? Right now LG is the only company that has a DVD player that plays both.

Porn won't make a difference this time around like it did for VHS. Back then there was no other way to get porn into your house. Now all you have to do is turn on your computer.

I own both formats and I can say that quality wise they are on par with each other. Right now Blu-Ray has better studio support. The only major studio that HD-DVD has as an exclusive is Universal. All other major studios are either neutral or exclusive to Blu-Ray.

The availability of titles is what's going to win this war. If things continue as they are, I don't see how HD-DVD can catch up. Disney is releasing both Pirates movies on Blu-Ray this summer when the 3rd one hits theaters. That's going to be huge.

I do think that the hardware for HD-DVD has been better quality up to this point compared to Blu-Ray. The output however is no better on either. They both look amazing.

No they don't. Blu-Ray holds more.

HD-DVD = 15gig per layer

Blu-Ray = 25gig per layer

The PS3 is Blu-Ray only. 360 has the HD-DVD add-on.

Thanks. I work in the industry so that helps. I've been into this type of shit as long as I can remember. A/V equipment is probably the subject I know most about.

And to add to my first post, to get a good idea of studio support I mentioned that Universal was the one major studio that was exclusive to HD-DVD. The list of exclusives to Blu-Ray (currently) include:

-Disney/Pixar
-Sony Pictures (obviously)
-Lionsgate
-20th Century Fox
-MGM

All other studios either support both or neither.

BluRay ftw. The less compression the better.

Having watched a bit of Underworld Evolution on BluRay and sampled the compressed vs uncompressed PCM soundtrack back to back I can say that the sound itself is simply amazing on the PCM track in comparisson.

I await my buddy picking up a projector capable of 1080p(720p now) to rewatch that movie full out.

Neither, there isn't enough of an incentive for regular consumers to pay $500 and up for a new player and $20-$25 a piece for new media. When DVD came out there were many advantages over VHS such as better quality, no quality degradation, easy movement thru the contents of the disc, and loads of extras. This latest jump only nets people somewhat better quality, and thats only if they own an HD TV as well.

The two formats were created because the DVD market became saturated and the manufacturers had no one to sell players to. And with all the digital and streaming media available, going down to the local retailer is no longer the only way to get high quality movies.

Cliffs notes: Neither win, once dual format players become common and drop in price people will pick whatevers available.
