Hey guys been a while since we had a watch thread and I know a bunch of you guys are really into watches so here's a new thread.

I had some trouble finding the watch I wanted but low and behold I found the Oris Big Crown Pointer.

I had a question as to whether or not I can switch to a leather band in the future? Are they standardized in size? I emailed Oris but haven't received a reply yet and the store did not know.

http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/9546/91169699xp0.gif

More modern but doesn't look like anything special.

ORIS is not the best quality watches. They usually tend to have problems.

If you want a quality movement watch with a reasonable price get an Omega or a Tag, or if you want to go a little more, a Rolex, Breitling or a Panerai (My personal Favorite)

oris (obviously) as something high-end yet affordable for me

seiko for their good prices, solid watches and technology. seiko makes the world's most accurate automatic.

omega for their excellent quality and nice overall designs.

patek phillipe for their complications (10 day tourbillion!), but the price is way more than I can see myself spending on a watch

citizen as a nice beater watch. their titanium are super light and comfortable. they also are powered by light so you don't need to worry about charging.

can you back this up a bit more? I'm interested because I've read the exact opposite. Also my grandfather has one and it's been excellent so far. I looked it over and the watch looks very well built. It's damn accurate too! He only gains about 5 seconds per day vs. a quartz watch.

that's insane. my cheapo seiko5 runs +20. and yes, as mentioned I was talking about the seiko spring drive. it's automatic, comparable in accuracy to quartz and has a sweeping second hand (unlike the ticking hand on regular automatic watches)

Well, alot of people love them, Im not asking you to just take my opinion, I personally do not like them.

I had 2, one of the movements had a malfuntion and just plain stopped working, and the other one had the pins constantly pulling out of the band, and it would just randomly fall off, then i had to go get it put back together, becuase it would lose small pieces when the pins fell out. VERY ANNOYING.

BUT, i might have just had bad experiene.

However, my Rolex, both my Omegas, and my Panerai Luminor Arktos, have NEVER had any problems, and i am pretty abusive to everyone of them except my Panerai.

To each his own.

what? all autos have sweeping second hands. quartz watches have the ticking second hand. that's one of the dead giveaways.

the weird thing is those two divers had the 7S26 movement, which is one of seiko's best for robustness. takes a serious beating. also, they are perfectly accurate on the +5. once it gets to that point, it stays on it.

Those watches are about 15K each aren't they? That looks like about $350,000 brand new.

Nope. Financing jewelry is the dumbest thing I can think of. I make enough money where I can afford a few new watches a year without changing my lifestyle. But since I am more concerned about saving money I buy watches at the rate of one every couple of years.

well that tissot line has all these unusual features that probably won't be to much use for the regular user like (altimeter) anyways so i can't really help you there..

i like diver watches myself (200m water resist myself) so that's a standard for me.

ask yourself this question, do you plan to go underwater beyond 30m? for example, the famous omega moon watch can go to the moon but it can't go underwater over 50m? what kinda madness is this!?!

it is really up to you on what watch you want. im just here to help :)

The bottom two are the most expensive at 110kish. They all vary a lot in price depending on the exact model.

Edit: A collector that doesn't own that collection gave that estimate.

I LOVE that watch. I just checked them out on Ebay and they're less expensive than I thought they'd be. My dad wears a Breitling and it's just beautiful. I'm not sure which model it is... I think it's a two tone Chrono Cockpit. I wear a Rolex Daytona but I think I'd rather have that Bentley edition...

Here's mine:

Just some knowledge for you guys that care about watch functionality...

Most companies use the same movements. The company that makes them is called ETA. From my reading only Oris and Patek modify these movements somewhat.

As someone mentioned, Seiko makes their own movements.

More companies than that modify the eta movements.

Here is some information about the movement inside the watch I am planing on getting.

AP own a 40% share in Jaeger LeCoultre and get most of their base movements from them, so it's no surprise that the Offshore is also JLC-powered. The official calibre number is 2126/2840, the number 2126 relates to the base movement, 2840 to the chronograph movement propped on top.

Calibre 2126 (2125 when it's not in a chronograph) is basically a JLC 889/1 running at 21'600 A/h instead of 28'800. It's an automatic, 26 mm in diameter, 3.25 mm high, has 33 jewels and a power reserve of 45 hours. I don't know the origin of the chrono module but I somehow doubt that JLC makes it, Dubois-Depraz or some other specialized company would be my guess. As far as I can tell, the module is exclusively for AP, I haven't seen it in watches by any other manufacturer.

Module-type chronograph calibres do have some disadvantages against classically constructed movements where the mechanics for the chronograph are fully integrated. First of all, watch-makers don't particularly like them because a lot more disassembling is required for a repair. Many also show a very annoying characteristic, the sweep second hand takes a jump of about 1/2 second when the chronograph is activated. Thankfully, the AP module starts and stops very smoothly without the jump. Also, due to the module being place on top of the base, the buttons and the crown aren't on the same line, on the Offshore the difference is hardly noticeable.

The finishing on the movement is AP-typically outstanding, all surfaces are either pearled or have Geneva stripes, the rotor is out of 21 K gold. (In case you're wondering, I didn't open it but have to rely on photographs)

The pricing is based in 1998 so it has increased since then.

I've been shopping around for an omega for awhile and I wanted the jame bond one since I thought it looked simple and nice, but I've been looking at a bunch of other omegas, any suggestions to something that looks more mature and classy with a white face and a ss bracelet?

watches don't have faces, they have dials.

the bond model is a very classy and mature watch. i own one.

however, if you want one with the white dial, try the seamaster gmt with white dial. it comes on the stainless bracelet, either the speedmaster style or traditional seamaster style.

i have a gmt with the black dial too. here's a shitty picture:

If I was getting an Omega, ronin's would be on my short list of considerations. I like chunky bezels on sport watches.

as i told you before, you need to see watches in context of the whole body of the person wearing it, not just looking at the watch on the arm.

it's a 42mm case and it's thick because of the gmt complication. it's nice looking watch.
