For my first book, I'd like to recommend One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Has anyone else read this fine novel by Ken Kesey? It was written in 1962, but it's amazing how its theme still is relevant to this modern era. Even in smaller stages such as this forum can the themes be observed.
Thoughts?

Really? Is the movie similar to the book?
In the book, there is a Nurse who pretends to exist for the good of the patients, but really she is just a psychotic control freak and in the end causes one of the patients to end up in a deceased state. She then tries to hide the whole incident and sweep it under the rug. A lot of censorship too.
I think it can apply directly to this forum. What do you think?

I'm almost finished with The Lemon Tree: An Arab, a Jew, and the Heart of the Middle East by Sandy Tolan
This book is a literary achievement. The author traces the lives of a Palestinian man whose family was expelled from his home in 1948 and the Israeli settler from Bulgaria whose family settled there. A young Jewish girl grows up in the house believing that the Palestinians left their home willingly until a young Palestinian man comes knocking at her door, asking if he can see the inside of the house his grandfather built. The two remain in touch throughout their lives and come to a nuanced understanding about their respective ordeals. Throughout this personal narrative the author seamlessly integrates a broader historical perspective. You simultaneously get a micro and macro look at the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

anyone who faces the dilemma of career professional vs. amateur can easily relate to it (y'know, the things that you have to do for office politics reasons and that you're getting paid to do it vs. what should be done b/c it's common sense, best practices, etc.).

He's the one that got me back into reading. I went through that "reading isnt cool" phase when I was a kid. So one day I see a paper back in my uncles van & just to make conversation I asked him about it. He told me to keep it, so I did & I read it. That book was KOKO by Straub & it was pretty good.
The book I like the best from him is Ghost Story, one of the only books to actually scare me a little. KOKO, Ghost Story & Shadowland are the only really good books.
I've read others by him, but they werent nearly as good. I just started Mr. X, so lets see how that goes. It's Straubs last chance.

Read parts of all three of those series. I'm still anticipating the next book in a Song of Ice and Fire, but I gave up on the latter two. At this point Robert Jordan and Terry Goodkind are just stringing their stories along for more money. There is no reason a single story should take 10+ books to complete.
Simon Green's Deathstalker series was one of my favorite sci-fi ones, and Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow and Thorn is a good fantasy trilogy.

UNFUCKINBELIEAVBLE man. i think it's the best book i have ever read. well written but the story is gripping. read the book in less than 3 days (after work). dont think the movie will do justice.
Couldn't agree more! It really is a moving story.
Tell me about it. I've been waiting for almost 10 years on Melanie Rawn's third book in the Mageborn Traitor series. It's rumored that she has finally started writing it, but it could be another 5 years till we see anything in print.
I'm hoping Robert Jordan finishes the Wheel of Time series before he freakin dies on us.
And a few years back I bought a couple books written by Michael Scott and Morgan Llewellyn that were part of a trilogy of books. Well they only wrote the first two and then decided not to write the third one. Ever. I should have guessed since the books were only a buck apiece for hard cover. I was so mad when I found out there was no conclusion. :jigglemad

I would suggest "A Million Little Pieces" by James Frey...
There is a whole lot of speculation suggesting that the stuff in the book is fake (it deals with addiction to drugs and alcohol)... but I still found the book to be a really really good read. Even if you don't do drugs, as i don't, you still get attached to it.
I'd also suggest Fight Club, it's alot better than the movie in my opinion.

Yeup, I used to do all that in High School and whatnot and I just found that I don't have time to read a book. I'm always caught up in college studies and haven't been able to pick up a good book in a while. So with that said, I'm wondering who here on CRSX reads? haha. I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a good book to read. I have an interest in things that involves suspense, thriller, mystery, war, fiction related stories and sex. Anything goes other than autobiographies. Give me some input.
much appreciated:thumbsup:

I have been (slowly) getting the dark tower books. I only need one more so I have the whole series so i can start reading.
i usually only grab em at the goodwill store since they're 50 cents to a dollar as opposed to the used bookstore which has gone up from an average of ~$2.50 a book to $4+

i've always been intrigued by the dark towers series. what are they about?
I read the first one (the Gunslinger) & it's pretty wierd.
Basically it's a battle between good & evil & it seems like there is an alternative universe/dimension where all this takes place.
King references back to the dark tower in many of his books, like Insomnia & Black House (with Peter Straub), plus a few more which I cant remember now.

Gunslinger/Dark Tower series was amazing. The best is the 4th book, Wizard and Glass. I sort of thought that too, but then the way it blends with The Talisman & Black House led me to believe it was an alternate dimension.

Without giving away too much basically every book King has written was a tune up for the Dark Tower series, which he considers to be his life's work. Roland is a character and adventure that King took over 20+ years to develop. Roland and his world are intertwined with every world and every "when." Roland encounters characters from all across the Stephen King literary landscape throughout his travels. It'll start to make sense in the next few books, starting with the "Drawing of the Three."

Author Robert Jordan (b.1948) died on September 16. Jordan, which is a pseudonym for James Rigney, Jr., was best known for his Wheel of Time series. He was working on the massive twelfth and final volume at the time of his death. Jordan also wrote several Conan novels and the Fallon series of historical novels, the latter under the name Reagan O'Neal. In 2006, Jordan announced he was suffering from amyloidosis with cardiomyopathy.

It has been stated by sources that in his final days he narrated his basic outline for the ending of the book (he was about 75% done) and the family and publisher took notes. If the estate and publisher can agree on who, someone else will finish book 12 for him.

Hubby wants to go piss on his grave when they bury him. (I'm not a Jordan fan)
He said the prequel that Jordan wrote was unnecessary and he probably could have finished book 12 if he hadn't stopped to milk the money machine.
Once book 12 is published (if ever), and hubby has read it, he wants to have a book burning party with all of the WoT books.

The prequel was an expansion of a short story he did, and I agree with your hubby's assessment that it was totally unnecessary. It pretty much undermined Moraine's character and turned her into kind of a joke.

There is one book I read as I child, I don't remember the title of it though, hopefully someone here will, I want to read it again
Anyway, the book is about this teen genius basically. He creates this new Operating system which is very advanced. Starts talking to this guy about marketing the OS and other stuff, he trusts the guy and lets him look at the OS, the guy pretty much steals all the code and doesn't give the kid any credit, so the kid goes out to look for him at the house address he was given. Surprise no one is there just a PC. The kid is attacked and when he wakes he finds out his brain has been replaced with a CPU, and if he doesn't plug in he dies (or something like that)
I'm missing a shit load of smaller important parts, but the last time I read it I was 11

I love to read, and I hope that I'm not alone. I'm always looking for new books, so post up either what you are reading now, or what you have read in the past that you would recommend.
Since it's my thread, I'll start.
Right now I'm reading The Story of My Life by Helen Keller. Basically it's about a woman that became deaf and blind at a very early age. The book is about her battle trying to learn with her disabilities.
Before that I read Things Fall Apart (can't remember or spell the authors name) but it was about an African tribe in the late 1800's/early 1900's and their reactions with Christian evangelicals from Britain. I would recommend this one as it dealt with tolerance and forcing others to adapt.

Another good book I read was A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. Bill is a writer that decides to walk the Appalachian trail and write about his experience. It's absolutely hilarious. Highly recommended.

Ive been on this kick lately where I've been reading all of the literature books that I feel I should have when I was in school (instead of having to read the god damn great gatsby 5 fucking times in highschool)
so i just finished up two Vonegut books (sirens of titan and slaughterhouse 5), I picked up the lord of the rings trilogy a few months ago and that's my bathroom book..haha...and currently Im working on reading Catch 22 by Heller as well as a more recent book by Mary Roach called "stiff" about the human body and what happens post-mortem. Very cool book with lots of strange and historical references in it.

I would recommend this one as it dealt with tolerance and forcing others to adapt.
i read things fall apart for an anthro class in college. strange name on the authro..ochebe or something like that?

That's where I found a lot of the books I also should have read when I was younger.

I like the Fire and Ice series of George RR Martin. Waiting on book 5, Dance with Dragons.
I also liked the entire Drizzt Do'Durden books by R.A. Salvatore.
I like mostly fantasy fiction, but also love reading philosophy. I am also currently re-reading all my semantics and hellenistic philosophy books.
Does reading calculus count? I tutor that weekly and have been ass deep (no finger smelling) in my old calculus books from college!

Does it deal with only electronic security or does it also touch on personal deceptions?
The world's most infamous hacker offers an insider's view of the low-tech threats to high-tech security
Kevin Mitnick's exploits as a cyber-desperado and fugitive form one of the most exhaustive FBI manhunts in history and have spawned dozens of articles, books, films, and documentaries. Since his release from federal prison, in 1998, Mitnick has turned his life around and established himself as one of the most sought-after computer security experts worldwide. Now, in The Art of Deception, the world's most notorious hacker gives new meaning to the old adage, "It takes a thief to catch a thief."
Focusing on the human factors involved with information security, Mitnick explains why all the firewalls and encryption protocols in the world will never be enough to stop a savvy grifter intent on rifling a corporate database or an irate employee determined to crash a system. With the help of many fascinating true stories of successful attacks on business and government, he illustrates just how susceptible even the most locked-down information systems are to a slick con artist impersonating an IRS agent. Narrating from the points of view of both the attacker and the victims, he explains why each attack was so successful and how it could have been prevented in an engaging and highly readable style reminiscent of a true-crime novel. And, perhaps most importantly, Mitnick offers advice for preventing these types of social engineering hacks through security protocols, training programs, and manuals that address the human element of security.
so far so good.

Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein is a book i think every citizen of the US should have to read.
Late Great USA by Jerome Corsi is a good book. Talks about a lot of the back door deals going on between USA Canada and Mexico, puts a lot of the pieces together as to why we are in the situation we are in.
Read Stephen Colbert and John Stewart's books, both funny but make a lot of good points.
