S/C RSX-S vs. Mid 90's Turbo MRII

So, my car has become somewhat infamous in community, and I get a few phone calls here and there from other people asking me to race them. This kid Brian Wood really wanted me to race him from third gear on the highway. I'm a regular at the performance shop we go to, so I know his car dyno'd @ 300whp, so I was almost possitive I'd lose because I doubt I'm making that kind of power, I had a toolset, sony projector, and snowboarding stuff in the car, and I'm heavier to begin with.

So. we're at the shop with Joe Riley (the guy who tuned both cars) and he really wants to see what the race looks like. So we go out, he follows us in a camery and we go at it. Both rounds I pulled like a car on him. I was completely shocked! I kind of figured something went wrong so I pulled over to talk to him. He said nothing went wrong and my car was just a bit faster.

I'm very happy to say the least and everybody was shocked at the outcome. I must say though, I love his car. Its such a sick little setup. I almost want one!

surprising outcome. when people here are quick to point out power to weight ratio here for the rsex, you beat a lighter and more powerful mr2. what gives huh? haha. i'm starting to believe that 3rd gear vtaaak defies physics. i think the rsex singlehandedly rewrites a new chapter in the principality in fact :laughing:

well, sure its lighter and more powerful, but you're forgetting a very important fact: it is an aging turbocharged car....most times it is not running as strong as it used to:o
or driver needs the driver mod.....

what gearing does the mr2 have? maybe the rsx's aggressive gearing could explain why he beat a lighter, more powerful mr2.


EDIT: just checked and it looks like the mr2 has 4.29:1 final drive so maybe that's the difference. what psi is the rsx running?

here are the mr2 gear ratios...
Gear ratios: 5th (0.82)
4th (0.97)
3th (1.31)
2nd (1.90)
1st (3.17)
Final drive ratio 4.13:1

stock, 200hp 200tq, but they get a larger gap in hp and torque with turbo upgrades and different intercooler/piping... and the stock intercooler can't support much more than about 2-3 psi over stock, or about 200whp... from what i've read.


so if the mr2 is making say 250 torque... in third gear it would put down roughly 1352 to the ground in third according to it's 3rd gear ratio and final drive...a 02-04 type s would put down about 1264 in third gear if it made about 190 tq (which is about the norm on a supercharged one for 9 psi) and 05-06 type s would down about 1374 in third gear with 190 tq...

of course the 250ish is just one i've seen, not sure how typical it is with the setups that make around 300.

but, by gear multiplication the type s wouldn't have to make as much power or torque to keep up, BUT weight is also somewhat of a factor.
