I believe the E and the 351 models had forged rotating assemblies, or at the very least a good piston swapped in, plus SOME saleens were actually built off of cobras so they started with stouter motors.

I'm not sure what the forged ones were called but from '99-'04 I think 95-97% of the S/C'd saleens were just stock 2 valve 4.6's with a blower.

it could be 94%-98% or 93-96% but you get the idea.

I had a nice little 1993 LX coupe a few years ago. Truck is an extended cab F-150 but it will run down a mildly modded Lightning. I really just don't a whole lot with it right now because of time contraints and entertaining the notion of swapping over to a turbo setup. But I work with a close group of car junkies so I get my hands on everything from Civics to AMG M-B's along with boats, jet-skis, ATV's, tractors, and diesel gen-sets.

www.modularfords.com has a lot of good information. From owning one...boltons will get you deep into the 12's, and F/I will go 11's and quicker depending on build. It's definitely a pretty good platform for drag, and more moddable than the Z.

mustang: great platform for drag racing, ridiculous power achievable with few tasteful mods, but overall not my cup of tea..i respect them, but would never drive one....
350z: great platform for daily driving with the occasional spirited run, not NEARLY as responsive to basic boltons as most other cars, exhaust sound pure sex - something i would consider if i decided not to mod but just drive around on daily...

thats my .02...if you want performance though, go mustang all the way..

I think the new Mustangs are nice, but still can't get over the interior. The gauges stand out in my mind in particular. Not as bad as some Dodge's I have seen, but not anything to write home about. If you are going to build it for performance and care nothing about the interior/exterior, etc. go with it.

Case for the mustang: Cheaper, if im gonna work on another car, this would be a better one. I like the styling and the interior, except for the center console. I would replace the head unit with a pioneer avic. With a mustang i would prolly get: kenne bell non intercooled, a set of coilovers and swaybars, the ford racing front brembos, some new wheels, and a nice meaty exhaust. I'm tired of the loud import exhaust sound, but a v8 growl = sex. Also benefits from a rear seat and a decent trunk.

The case for the Z: I think the styling is drop dead gorgeous. I think i can live with no rear seat and a small hatch. If I get the Z, I wont be doing as much stuff to it as this car. I'd do, sways, wheels, stoptech bbk on all 4 corners, and those sexy little dual intakes.

My other questions about the stang are longevity under boost, how durable is the stock motor? And when ive looked at install threads about audio and head units, every time ive seen the head unit pulled off, the framework behind it has a bunch of rust on it, whats up with that?

The stock block will hold up quite a while under boost, provided you have a proper tune. I've had my intercooled blower for about a year and had no problems with it. The only cases where people blow motors are when they run too lean on the tune or just try to push the envelope too much power-wise (> 500whp is generally considered borrowed time).

BTW, I wouldn't really bother with the non intercooled kit. The charge temps going into the combustion chambers are extremely high without an intercooler and make it a threat to knock/detonate and may even be less reliable than the IC kit pushing more power.
