I want to hear you guys' opinions / critiquing...

I made two sets so far while learning how to screw around with Virtual DJ.

The first set is mostly house music... but its mostly well known tracks and definitely club bangers. This is 30 minutes long. Recorded @ 320kbps... so about 75mb in size.

The second set is a mix of anything I could find and put together (i.e. unorganized) from different genres: Progressive, Trance, House, Dark / Tribal, etc. I just went with the flow of things. This is about 60 minutes long @ 320kbps ... so about 125mb in size.

first set doesn't sound bad but I would let the tracks mix a bit longer than a couple seconds to make for a smoother transition. You want to make it smooth and sound like one long song.

Ok, I think I've made progress here lol... noob checking in...

I finally got my external speakers working so that I can use my headphones on a 2nd line to hear whats going on in the 2nd mixer (is that the right term? for the 2nd song playing in the background that I'm fine tweaking to match the song)

I just played around quickly and I've noticed a much larger improvement using the beat-bar-loops to cross my songs over in a much smooother fashion.

When all epic disasters are afoot... the best words I live by are: "Hold on... I'm trying something here" :rotfl:

Has anyone noticed the re-emergence of Goa-Trance. It's now called Psy-Trance and it's what Paul Oakenfold first started spinning. Lately, at juno, beatport, first rhythm, ect.. it's getting alot of attention & releases again. Very trippy and intricate music. Definately a genre of techno I could see myself play. I just hope it doesn't begin to incorperate the electro or cheese-trance sounds that have caused stagnation in those fields of music.

Thanks.:thumbsup: That is definately psy(GOA)-trance! That is the type of trance that is reminiscent of when trance was not popular.

Christopher Lawrence was one of my favorite DJ's up until 2000. I have several of his CD's but his baddest is "RISE" released on Fragrant Records/City of Angels. The begining track, Huntemann: "Phreaks" is one of the darkest tracks that I've ever heard! Once he left Fragrant Records he began playing more mainstream. I'm glad to see that he's gone to his underground roots again.

John "00" Flemming was a great trance DJ also but in 99-00 he too jumped on the mainstream bandwagon. Glad to see his gone back to his roots.

There both incredible DJ's and their technical skills on the mixer boards and effects processors are nothing short of incredible.

It looks that I've discovered a new genre to spin.

Curious. What club is Mr.Lawrence a resident DJ at? Have you heard him play and how would you rate him when he plays live.

A couple years ago, he came out with Subculture 01, from Pharmacy Music. It was "01" so it looks like he really is getting back to it. You will like that studio mix. Orion - "Universal Ping Pong" is pretty hard and energizing, it's on that studio mix.

He was on before deep dish's countdown set at TAO 06-07. He played mostly a psy-trance sound if I remember, but I left to the DnB area untll deep dish came on. That's when I discovered CL, and bought his studio mix. But I don't think the new psy-trance is quite the same as the old goa-trance, which I was into before it died to the prominence of prog and vocal trance. I like driving to the new psy-trance in the mornings to work. That and my coffee/redbull really wake me up haha
Shitty thing is CL just moved to Melbourne. He said he would come back to LA as much as possible, since it's his original home and he loves it.

Not many people can be both producers and great DJ's. There both two avenues that take considerable time to master. As a DJ for ten years, I'm constantly learning the medium. Till this day, I'm nowhere close to the "true" masters like Dave Seaman, James Ziabiel, ect.... . For instance, I just got my hand on a Boss SP-303 with a 64 mg expansion, and now I'm learning an entirely new level of effects, sampling, and editing technics that I never fathomed.

Personally, producers have to be more technical, innovative, analytical, have a deep understanding of highly sophisticated machinery(pro-tools, Korg M3, Acces Virus, Nord Leeds, ect.... ). In the past, before I started DJ-ing I had more respect for producers bc they are the creators of the music. In general, these guys provide the raw material that DJ's use to advance the electronic scene. Now I have equal respect for both( just a tad more respect for producers in general bc of their musical & technical ability).

However, the one aspect of DJ compilations that I cant stand with the general audience is credit given to DJ's as opposed to the producers for the production of track selections. Credit is due to the DJ soley bc of mixing and track selection. Credit is due to producer when it comes to the creator of the individual tracks.

DJ-ing is all about being the storytellers of techno music-the good one's anyway. The talent with DJ-ing lies within their ability to mix music into a continous escapade, without losing the crowds attention or energy. How many times have I seen Jimmy Van Mullegen start out with ambient to a room full of dedicated house heads, and end the night with intense progressive breaks to the same crowd that usually hates breaks. That takes innovation and true mixing skills.

Either way, they are two different monsters to master.

The only four DJ's that can do both aspects flawlessly are Sasha, John Digweed, Dave Seaman, and Paul Van Dyk. I must note that Sasha, John Digweed, and Dave Seaman have acclaimed audio engineers like Charlie May(Spooky), Alan Bremann(1/2 of Brothers in Rhythm), and Nick Muir (1/2 of Bedrock) by their sides in producing, programming, & orchestration of music.

Here's a style of techno that is truly on the edge... Acid Techno. You haven't heard hard music tell you've listened to this(nothing compares to it on how viceral this type of music is)..... it's the same genre of music from the rave scene on Blade. Matter of fact, it's the creator of that particular remix.

So I take it being a bedroom DJ is at the end of it's life(speculating)? Good luck with the sale. I've sold my equipment 3 times calling it quits. Bought my last studio in the summer of 08. It's hard to let go.

Do you have a tracklist?

Minutes 15 to 30 were probably the best. Very fluid, really good transitioning, and the song selection in those 15 minutes or so were spot-on.

i have a tracklisting, its somewhere in my cd case, buried along with my other dj gear that i have to haul week in and week out, i'll post them up soon, just got done replacing brakes, rotors, axles on my rsx...and lowered my buddies tsx, do all 4 of his brakes and rotors, kinda bumm out right now.

Hmmm , not that one . What I meant by the hook being a whistling tune , its an instrument playing , not actual human vocals.

The song by Yves realllly sounds like words "we are the children of the sun" then the whistling comes in . Thanks though .

Yo guys, haven't been on in a while, recently stumbled upon some international forum for trance with TONS of music, can't really read what most of the people are talking about but I've gotten a bunch of new music off it.

what sucks about free download stuff is that the quality sucks ass.........even though they say its 320kb, it still sounds horrible........but for just casual listening.......its good enough.

I've learned to take on a more methodical approach now with mixing.
