i love my djm 800 and my MK3-1000s best 4500 i spent! got rid on my TT's cause i got no used for them anymore..

I used to have a djm600. I liked it. I recently had a chance to play a djm800. It was nice. I can really tell the difference in the quality in sound effects(especially flanger) and the sampler at 24 bits is incredible when compared to the 600. However, the djm1000 is incredible when it comes to sound quality. It doesn't carry many features but is soley dedicated to producing the best sound possible. When I mean the difference in sound is like comparing a regular dvd to blue-ray. It's that good. I'm looking to buy some cd-turntables soon. I know the MK3's are the best in the market but I just want to go with something smaller. What are your thoughts on cdj400's(the new replacements to the cdj200's)? Also, I dont understand why having a larger jog wheel(mk3) is better than a smaller one(cdj400). It's not a vinyl turn table, your playing cd's. Any input would be appreciated.

What I notice off the top of my head by looking at the two, I noticed that the 1000 has the Jog Wheel Adjust button which u can control the jog wheel, making it soft or hard, by making it soft, just a slight touch can throw the track off by a lot by make it faster or slower(sometimes can throw your beat matching off), by making it hard, it'll take a 1 in. turn to move the track faster or slower.

also the Vinyl Speed Adjuster on the 1000 u can make the track slow down or pick up at the speed that you are comfortable with, I don't really used it much, I just set it at a certain speed and leave it there.


Like I said, I cant really tell you much cause I haven't played with the 400 at all. When I picked up my tables, when I bought my tables, I just went for the highest model that has everything in it, that way you cant go wrong and have second thoughts, if later on down the road you realized that you need something with more options and features.

Why get the 1000 over the 400? resale value, later on the road if you find no use for it anymore, or grow sick and tired of it, you can sell the 1000 and still get at least 80% of the money you put into it back, while the 400 will be hard to sell cause it's something that is least desired by many dj's out there.

You cant go wrong with Industry Standard Equiptment like the 1000.

Thanks for the input. Well heavily take this into account. Thanks for the links too. In one of the reviews they state that the cdj400's are equevilent in features to the cdj800's. Again my problem is space but I'm now heavily decideding on the mk1000's.

Anywho, I just learned a little on how to use Apache. For those of you that dont know, it allows you to post up and host files on your own internet connection without having to go through the ghey services that we have all been using. In short, its great for those that have a killer connection. Mine is decent at the moment and I plan on upgrading shortly. But just to get things started, Im going to post up my IP addy + folder shared and see how this goes. It will only allow you to download 2 files at a time. and I will only post up a few at a time so that I know people wont be hording my shit. Right click and save as is all you need to do to grab the tracks.

I got into trance in late 1998. Loved it to death so much that I spent a considerble amounts of money to become a DJ. This is when trance was not formuleric like it is today and hardly no one knew of it. Trance became big because DJ's like Sasha, John Digweed, Parks & Wilson and pre-chesse Oakenfold believed in it. It was beautifull dark and most importantly was real music. Producers like Quivver, Tilt, Salt Tank, ect... pushed trance music in very creative directions.

However, the mainsteam became to notice it and it got commericialized and it all went to cheese heaven. By the end of 1999-2000 it got bad and ever since trance has become a nasty name among many DJ's. In response to the commericialism of trance, all the great DJ's and producers who pionnered and created the trance sound went to the progressive scene. Sadly, a considerable amount of trance still follows a very simple formula which still employs the same appegiators and sound.

I loved trance for awhile untill 2000. Hell, it's the reason why I became a DJ for the last 9 years. I got tired of it bc it was like eating candy everyday. Evantually you get sick of it. Anthem after anthem you begin to realize that alot of it very repetive until two things happen. You either stop listening to techno or you start following other DJ's or genres of techno. Now, I'm not dissing trance at all there are still a few labels that push some great tracks. Hell, I still have at least 600 vinyl records of the most incredible trance music ever which I still play till this day.

I evantually started playing and mixing progressive house, progressive trance(not commericial balls to the walls trance), and progressive breaks. I enjoy this sound bc it's very intelligent and reminscent of the mid to late 90's trance sound. It's highly textured, intricate, at times deep, and intelligent. It's not candy coated and doesn't have to use strong sounds to lure you in. What progressive music does it makes the listener really listen to all of the multi-tracked sounds and how it evolves in the music. Morever, alot of progressive music is considered deep or tech trance.

Morever, I think what alot of trance music is missing today is learning how to play a great 2-10hour set and how to mix intelligenty. This is what Sasha & Digweed, Dave Seaman, ect.. are known for and no one can do it better. Mixing is the hardest aspect of DJ-ing bc it requires you to know your music, counting your bars per measure, working an eq, and nowing your equipment(mixer, sampler,...). Sasha is the king of this. Listen to any mix CD he has and while not looking at the track number you cant tell when one song ends or the other begins. He's CD's are one long continous song or journey. It's story telling from a good DJ's point of view. What do I mean by this? It's simple. You have to start your music at a low bpm's with subtle sounds and ambience. As you play your tracks you to have slowly build the energy of your tracks with tempo and punch. You do this bc if you just play hardcore trance tracks from the begining, you will fatigue your crowd with both sound and bpm's unless your hyped on exctasy or LCD. Then, you should consider wether you like the music or just being fucked up at a party.

Cliffs: Not dissing trance it still a great genre but when you begin to get tired of it, dont just stop listening to techno but open you ears to other genres of techno.

right now, im going through exactly what you went through. for the past two years or so, a majority of what i have listened to has been trance, but its starting to get old now. the songs used to seem so inspiring and beautiful (especially when i was smoking, which is what got me into trance in the first place).

However, there is no denying that Sasha & John Digweed are one of the greatest DJ's of our times. I was just listening to Northern Exposure 2 (West Coast edition). What a badass CD. Tracks like Speed J's "Fusion"(Live mix), Thirdman "Solar Cycle".... . CD's has elements of hard techno, progressive house, proper trance, and just plain beautifull music. The way these guys mix is just plain incredible.

Northern Exposure series are the pinnacle of the greatest techno music ever released. I remember first getting into the rave/techno scene and every seasoned raver/clubber raving about the Northern Exposure series and thinking to myself, "there OK. Kind of mellow", and putting them into the back of my CD collection-forgetten(Hint: this is for everyone who has just started listening to techno in the last year). I listen to these CD's now that my maturity for techno has increased 1000 fold in the last 9 years and reflect, coming to only one logical conclusion, "Why the hell did I not realize how incredible these CD's where the first time around". It is an aquired taste. This is music for anyone who trully wants to understand what electronica can offer if one is willing to sit and listen with time. Sasha, John Digweed, Dave Seaman, Pre-99 Oakenfold, and countless other underground DJ's are the "real" kings of trance!

Some great masterpieces released over the years are the following:

Sasha: "Ibazi"-The greatest of all the Global Underground series(John Digweeds "Honk Kong coming to a close second). First time I was ever introduced to deep progressive trance & tech trance and became a believer. It takes time to really appreciate this masterpiece. I have yet to hear a mix where the music was mixed more creatively and ingenious. To the layman this means you can't tell when one song begins and the other ends! Notable mentions: Cass & Slide "Perception", Sasha "Xpander", Sander Klienberg "My Lexicon", BT's "Fiboniccie Sequence" .... the entire CD is that good. Every song is a masterpiece.

Dave Seaman: "The Masters Series Pt.1". Just like the above except a little harder edged and a little more techno influenced. Peak time all the way. Notable tracks:
Nerva "Arzamas-16", Schiller "Ruhe"(Humate remix), Ocean Wave "Clearwater" (Highland remix).

Noel Sanger: "Trance 2". A cd from an awesome DJ but more importantly an INCREDIBLE producer. If you get a chance-he has a track from 2004 called, "Designs" released on Electrofly Records that is phenoemanol. Simply breathtaking. Includes the one of the darkest trance tracks ever, Tilts "I Dream"(Tilts Reseruaction Remix-1999)-this track is dark and wonderfull. Other notable mentions: Carrisa Mondiva "Solid Ground" (Fade vocal remix).

Almost all the tracks released on these CD's are timeless. If they were released today or played by a DJ they would still be scene as "new" and creative. Meaning they dont follow a basic, "listen to me now formula". Of course, there are 100's of other CD's to mention but these are at the top of my head right now. Just remember that technology is always moving incredible fastward in this area of music that you have to keep up. If you dont and decide to get back into it- it's like starting all over again. Just curious why have you stopped? I'm asking bc I stopped mixing 3-4 years ago bc the music was changing in a direction that I didn't like. Still dont like how it sounds now. However, techno in general is the only music that clicks with me in all the right ways. I have thousands of songs that will keep me busy in creating my own mixes for the years to come. As of now, there are only maybe 4-5 tracks released per month that catch my attention but engough to keep my occupied enough to keep me busy for some time now.

I've realized that I just miss creating my own mixed CD's with the right atmosphere and feeling.

I agree with everything you said but you forgot to mention the Renaisance albums... the sasha/digweed foldout is one of my most rare albums that I own. Good stuff.

I was a freshman in Highschool 98-99. Nobody listened to this music. I had no resources for good electronic music back then.

So I'm in the record store looking to buy my first electronica CD. I spot Expeditions over there. I didn't know who Sasha and Digweed were back in early 1999. I was a newbie.

But I saw this on the shelf. "Hmm...this looks good."

Best decision I've ever made buying music. I have it in my big CD case right in front of me. 10 years later and this two disc set hasn't gotten old. Because I love it so much, I felt compelled to tell you my lame ass story. Yeah I had a bunch of mp3 cd's, etc. But this was the first I actually bought. And it is marvellous!



Best played lounging. Alone. With your big ass headphones on. Start with CD1 track 1. Play continuously until CD2 ends with Mike Koglin's "The Silence." This two disc set will take you away to a dream world. Great for meditation.

I couldn't agree with you more. Most new DJ's today start with CD tables and never get a chance to ever learn turntables. I tell them over and over again that no one has created a format that equals or exceeds the simplicity of mixing on vinyl. Morever, vinyl is hard to learn to mix but once you've mastered you've mastered CD turntables also and NOT vice versa. It literally only took 5 minutes for me to learn to mix on CD turntables just as good as any other DJ. However, when I see DJ's try to learn to mix on turntables it's a complete disaster. When they ask what they should do I always repley, "Practice, practice, and more practice". I usually tell them 6 months of moderate practice before you can start using that media in the clubs or creating your own CD's.


The Pioneer CDJ-1000 MK3's are awesome but again they can be heavily improved on. They have all those buttons but yet still can't deliver the basic operations that a good Technic 1200's can.

What needs to be created is a CDJ with a motor(the one Technics has is OK but the player itself isn't that great), a graphical depiction of when the song breaks(the waveform for the MK3's is OK but it is only usefull for short periods of the song) through out the song, and the ability to scan anywhere instanously through out the song. These are the factors that make vinyl such an awesome media.

Dont get rid of your turntables. I sold mine 3-4 years ago. I just spent 1,200.00$ buying new ones and that's not even including the needles. Remember, there's alot of vinyl music of the past is never going to be officially released as downloads. Morever, vinyl double packs wich you usually have at least 4-9 remixes will not even see "un-official" downloads. Case in point, I cant find the second remix by Solar Stone of Matt Darey's "From Russia with Love" (Solar stone's deep blue remix) that was only released on the 2X12"promo" by Liquid Asset.

The last track is actually the Tekara remix of Mike Kognlin's "The Silence" released on 3-Beat records. The original is OK but the Tekera remix is an awesome interpetation of the original with the new addition of strings and breaks. This is what makes techno in general so awesome is that at times you hear an interpation(via remix) of an original song in a totally new light that equals or surpasses the original.

The first track, Breeder's "Tyrantically" is so got damn, dark, gritty, and epic. It should of been included in the begining scene of some movie. It has so many layers of intracies you get lost quick. Breeder has created so many great tracks, "Twilo Thunder", "Rockstone" and done amazing remixes: Planet Perfecto "Not over Yet" (Breeder rmx), Tilt "Children"(Breeder's time is now remix), Orbitals "Nothing Left" (Breeder rmx) & (Pariah rmx), Space Manuevers "Stage One" (pariah's shadow lounging remix).

Space Manuevers "Stage One"(aka John Graham which goes under the name Quiveer) is actually two remixes of Stage One. The break remix(seperation remix) and 4x4 remix(total seperation remix), both released on Hooj Choons. You would never know bc they mix both remixes seamlessly. I should note that there are 7 remixes if this song that where done incrediblely, that are good as the one on Expeditions CD, including rmx's done by Pariah(aka Breeder), Solor Stone, and Tilt.

My personal favorite was Sasha's Belfunk. When you hear the piano solo and the stirngs and haunting vocals coming in at the break down- it's haunting, ghostly, errie, and beuatifull all at the same time. A masterpiece.

I highly suggest you listen to the other Nothern Exposure CD's. There every bit as good if not better. Initially, you may say there OK but the more you listen to them the more you realize how these guys where so ahead of their time. There all awesome.

I agree with everything you said but you forgot to mention the Renaisance albums... the sasha/digweed foldout is one of my most rare albums that I own. Good stuff.

There's to many to name. Your right that Renaisance has created some awesome CD's. Probably more than any other record company. Hernan Cantaneo, Luke Chable, Nick Warren, ect... . It's been Dave Seaman in my opinion that has made Renaisance some of the best collections ever. Of the top of my head I can think of 13 releases he's done for the label. Each one spilling out wtih quality. The best releases are either the Sasha/Digweed or the Dave Seamans first "Master's series". Brilliant!

The last track is actually the Tekara remix of Mike Kognlin's "The Silence" released on 3-Beat records. The original is OK but the Tekera remix is an awesome interpetation of the original with the new addition of strings and breaks. This is what makes techno in general so awesome is that at times you hear an interpation(via remix) of an original song in a totally new light that equals or surpasses the original.

The first track, Breeder's "Tyrantically" is so got damn, dark, gritty, and epic. It should of been included in the begining scene of some movie. It has so many layers of intracies you get lost quick. Breeder has created so many great tracks, "Twilo Thunder", "Rockstone" and done amazing remixes: Planet Perfecto "Not over Yet" (Breeder rmx), Tilt "Children"(Breeder's time is now remix), Orbitals "Nothing Left" (Breeder rmx) & (Pariah rmx), Space Manuevers "Stage One" (pariah's shadow lounging remix).

Space Manuevers "Stage One"(aka John Graham which goes under the name Quiveer) is actually two remixes of Stage One. The break remix(seperation remix) and 4x4 remix(total seperation remix), both released on Hooj Choons. You would never know bc they mix both remixes seamlessly. I should note that there are 7 remixes if this song that where done incrediblely, that are good as the one on Expeditions CD, including rmx's done by Pariah(aka Breeder), Solor Stone, and Tilt.

My personal favorite was Sasha's Belfunk. When you hear the piano solo and the stirngs and haunting vocals coming in at the break down- it's haunting, ghostly, errie, and beuatifull all at the same time. A masterpiece.

I highly suggest you listen to the other Nothern Exposure CD's. There every bit as good if not better. Initially, you may say there OK but the more you listen to them the more you realize how these guys where so ahead of their time. There all awesome.
