Its a good entry level D-SLR.

Its only weakness is the lack of an internal focus drive motor. This is unlikely to affect you since you're just getting into it. You'll just have to make sure you purchase lenses with built in motors if you want auto focus.

You cannot go wrong with the D40x!

I say go for it and have a great time shooting! I would recommend checking out the current deal they have for the D40's where you get:

1) D40x Body
2) Nikkor lenses (18-55) & (55-200)
1) Standard bag to hold all items including a flash.
18) Photo classes (this is a an offer that you get only at Ritz camera's)

All for $999-1099 (depending on the week you buy it). I work at Ritz camera and that is a TOP SELLER! Every two weeks Ritz puts out sales. I'm not saying you should BUY from Ritz, but that I see how fast the camera sells because of the great deal!

You can also upgrade the 55-200mm to the VR version for an additional $50 which is WAY worth it!

Get the camera and enjoy bro! You'll love it!

vtech inside said it had no auto focusing :*( plus i saw one at best buy 2day 4 800 bucks and u think they upgrade the lenses over there?

vtech inside said it had no auto focusing :*( plus i saw one at best buy 2day 4 800 bucks and u think they upgrade the lenses over there?Yeah! There isn't a "DEAL" for the upgrade, just the normal price difference Nikon offers.

55-200 = $200
55-200VR = $250

So you cannot go wrong!

The camera body itself doesn't have an AF motor inside so you HAVE to buy lenses with the motor built in to be able to AF. This is the reason Nikon is able to make the camera so affordable! Basically you cannot AF with Nikon's older lenses, but stick with their NEW line-up and you'll be safe!

I think you can't go wrong with a Canon Rebel XTi.

Just make sure you buy Nikon AFS lenses and you'll be fine.
Otherwise, practice manual focussing.

Or get a D80 and it won't be an issue.

do you "need" a dslr or just want a decent camera with out all the bells and whistles?

a simple point and shoot might do well for you?

What kind of pictures will you be taking for graphic design and advertising? The reason I ask is cause then we know what kind of lens selection you will be looking at, and also matching a body that can do what you're looking to do.

It'll be over $1k eventually, but at least get started in the right direction... you can either get something in your budget and "starting" you off.. and eventually upgrade to something more suitable, or bite the bullet and cry once.

D40x is a good camera. Nothing to worry about there. Just a question of what kinda of gear you're looking to have setup for the future.

well a point and shoot can run you way under $1000
personally i don't care for the D40 or the D40x, I'd rather pick up a slightly used D50 from somewhere.

For starting out you'll be more then fine with a body & kit lens

Canon makes a great camera, if he had said he wanted a canon i'm sure we'd all be throwing idea's out to canon's. One day people will realize you can't go wrong with either one. The man makes the camera, the camera doesn't make the man (or woman)

I realize that. I own a Nikon and took my photo class using it. It was a film camera but still a good camera none the less. I'm just saying that why aren't some of the other cameras being considered. Especially since he's new and never owned a dslr, all the entry models and features should be compared to see which best suits his needs. Pentax included ;) ...oh and Sony too.

Cause their not the most popular ones. I can't comment on the Sony cause I don't know, so I don't comment. However, If I was new to the game I'd go with Canon &/or Nikon.

Do you know what you're shooting? It's not the number of lenses, it's the quality of lenses. Your body will not really amount to much in terms of picture quality because lenses is what makes the picture (and the camera man/woman). So what do you shoot? Are you still in that $1k budget with the body as well?

The D40 undercuts the price of the XTi and other entry level D-SLRs by a good bit, that helps.

everyone flocks to best buy, they're not that great.
same in my area of the retail world, everyone thinks petsmart is a great deal, etc etc.

We're cheaper and know more :)
