minouuupak 09-07-2007, 08:38 PM Hey eveyone, how do I take a good night sports pic?? I went to the army soccer game today and practice my night shots, but most came out blurry. I used 55-200mm VR with 60-80 shutter speed and no flash...I didn't realize my ISO was at 1600 either...a little bit grainy. I'm not going to post pics..lol
itzjere 09-07-2007, 09:09 PM Try using shutter priority (1/200 at least) and upping the ISO. You can easily fix noise issues in photoshop and noise ninja. blurry pictures are much harder to fix.
dc5ivtec 09-07-2007, 09:36 PM Hey eveyone, how do I take a good night sports pic?? I went to the army soccer game today and practice my night shots, but most came out blurry. Its not going to be possible to get anything decent with those type of settings. I supposed you could up to ISO 3200, but even that is only going to give you a shutter of 1/200. A 1/500th shutter is almost neccesary to stop motion.
kwork 09-07-2007, 09:37 PM You really need a lens with a wider aperture (like f/2.8) for anything at night even if the stadium is lit, it's not as bright as you think. Shutter priority is a good option at night. Then let the camera figure out the rest. With wider ap, you could probably get down to ISO 400 or 800 without too much blur.
kwork 09-07-2007, 09:38 PM abower... I really like those last 2 shots.

KillerBlackbird 09-09-2007, 01:15 PM Since I have only used my teleconverter once since I bought it, I decided to use it again the other day.
Taken at 17mm with my 17-55 f/2.8.

Taken at 400mm with 2X teleconverter for a total length of 1280mm (with the 1.6X 30D crop factor). Handheld, manual focus, ISO 100, 1/60 shutter (I think).

KillerBlackbird 09-09-2007, 01:49 PM thats a pretty far zoom. makes me want a teleconverter
Its nice, but I am at f/11 at maximum zoom, and the 100-400L is not exactly a low light friendly lens.
KillerBlackbird 09-09-2007, 02:04 PM Adirondack Nationals Car Show, Lake George New York. That makes it the un-official end of summer up here. Its a muscle car/street rod show, but all kinds of cars cruise until the early morning hours all weekend long. The main strip is packed with people, some fairly intoxicated, dumping water in the road trying to get people to burn their tires. It was about 75-80 degrees out at night and very humid, perfect weather.
This truck was about 6-inches taller than my friends F-350, and he had two hot bitches with him. I would of taken a shot of her, but his arms were the size of my head.

Hey WHITE,
Hope you don't mind my edit of your photo, but I have been experimenting with PS laltely and would like to get some honest feedback on this edit. Is it too much and does it actually improve the shot, or do most prefer the original?
kwork 09-11-2007, 06:29 AM Original seems a little flat. The redo has some pop without looking overprocessed. I like it
abowersrsx 09-11-2007, 08:27 AM i like the colors...but the original is more sharp/crisp. Im a big fan of having as crisp of photos as i can.

dc5ivtec 09-13-2007, 01:17 PM Yeah, i mean its a cool pic for all its worth, but I dont know what to look at. The paramount logo dominates the pic, followed by the jorofoto.com, followed by the car. I'm assuming the car is the focus so its not the best thing that its third on the list. Alos as the other people mentioned, the extreme wb only helps to hide the car in the background. I know you car is silver, but in this picture you cant even tell.

what an awesome shot. So is that just a filter that goes over the lens?? And how much. obviously i woudl need a canon equivalent.

kwork 09-15-2007, 07:53 PM what an awesome shot. So is that just a filter that goes over the lens?? And how much. obviously i woudl need a canon equivalent.
There is no canon equivalent. Just like a UV or CPL filter, it screws in.
I bought a 62mm filter used for $30 (new at B&H is $80) to use on my 35-70 mm lens. At that price, I had to jump on it. It's a Hoya R72 filter.
The trick to it is you have to compose your picture without the fiter, then screw the filter in and look through the viewfinder to dial in your shutter speed. Once I dial it in, I take a couple steps in each direction from center so I have a few to choose from once I get home
Shutter speeds are in the 4-10 second range so a sturdy tripod is a must. Also, if it's windy, you will get some obvious blur (look at the trees in my barn pic) with that slow shutter speed so a calm day s ideal.
Shooting in midday sun is not a problem either so that's when I use the IR filter. Shoot regular pics in the morning and evening with IR around lunch.

banzaisteve 09-17-2007, 09:42 PM Wow, so I edited some pics I took last week finally. I edited them on my laptop and showed them to my friend. She was like, dang a lot of those are way dark. I was like...wtf? So when I got home from school today I checked them out on my home computer and a lot are hella dark. Any suggestions on how to adjust screen on laptop?

I want one too :[. I hate being broke lol. I should sell my alarm that's been sitting in room for couple months and pick me up one xD.
kwork 09-17-2007, 10:24 PM IR filters aren't that expensive.
Ebay has them for 50mm f/1.8 (52mm) for as low as $31 shipped right now.
I must sound like a TV spokesman for IR photography, but it's really fascinating to me.

02Rsxblkjc 09-18-2007, 11:32 AM hat does the IR filter actually do? i know you cant see through chicks knickers but what is it normally used for? low light shots? or to shoot through haze and fog?
kwork 09-18-2007, 11:47 AM IR won't shoot thru haze or somebody's shirt.
It actually is best in very bright light.
I've just gotten started with IR. You will need an IR filter and a good sturdy tripod.
Plantlife reflects Infrared light at varying degrees than different kinds of building materials. This difference, along with setting a custom white balance in your camera, comes off as a nice high contrast black and white image after just a bit of post processing.
kwork 09-18-2007, 11:52 AM which one did you get kwork? 720, 760, 850, 950?
720nm is what I got.
Do you have a good tripod?
Once you mount the filter, point it at a patch of green grass and set the custom White Balance.
Now, compose your image without the filter (since you can't see thru your viewfinder with the filter attached) Put on the filter and set aperture around f/14 and exoposure around 3-5 seconds, (full manual) depending on how bright the sun is. Take a pic and look. Adjust exposure time and reshoot until you see an image you like.
SitAndWatch 09-18-2007, 12:00 PM seems like a lot of work. i have a decent tripod. not a good one though.

kwork 09-18-2007, 02:20 PM seems like a lot of work. i have a decent tripod. not a good one though.
As long as it's sturdy you'll be fine, just don't want any camera shake while the shutter is open. Also, once you set the custom white balance, it's in there whenever you need it (until you override it)
Use the self timer so you don't get any shake if you don't have a remote. I have a remote and still use the self timer.

if you use USM (unsharp mask) you can use the sliders to get the shot where you want it..
its most likey over sharpened.. what i use is 110%, 2.7-2.9, and 0 threshold.. but try and play with it and see what works for you..

JaCkaL829 09-19-2007, 10:48 PM Lots of stuff I took this afternoon. Turns out my back is messed up again so my chiropractor recommended I partake in more physical activity, so I'm taking long walks now since I'm in a lot of pain and that's pretty much all I can do. While on my walks I take the canon along with me for anything interesting.
Everything below is on a main road that goes through my town into neighboring others.

kwork 09-20-2007, 03:24 PM I can shoot all day and not fill up one of my 2GB cards. I'd be scared to fill up a 16GB card.
I've got 5-6 GB of SD cards, so that's always good for a weekend of shooting RAW+Basic Jpeg.
If I'm going out of town for an extended stay, I'd rather take a laptop so I can weed through the pics back at the hotel while I'm waiting on my wife to get out of the shower.

chartchaiganan 09-21-2007, 03:15 AM Bah. Right now I'm going back and forth deciding between Nikon or Canon. I've had some Nikons and I started Nikon because my dad had some lenses that would supposedly work w/ my Nikon camera. But the camera store told me it wouldn't. But still I went ahead and bought Nikon. Sadly I'm going back and forth because I see so much Canon. I suppose it's peer pressure. Yes I know it's not the camera, blah blah blah.
But what I'm looking for is low light and iso performance. And right now, Canon has that. However, I've heard much about why Nikon is better blah blah and egronomics. I've never used a Canon before so I wouldn't know. But I now I've been reading on DPreview forums that the Canon LCD isn't so great. But it can't be that bad from what I've seen and played with in stores.
But as I was saying before, I suppose it's peer pressure and the fact that Canon does well w/ ISO performance. And I keep hearing how the Canon lenses are better compared to Nikon (Please feel free to throw in opinions). But I have read that some Canon lenses are not that sharp compared to others (ie. 16-35 f/2.8).
But mainly I wanted to vent. It's bugging me so much and still in the back of my mind. I need to put my foot down and stay with a brand before I invest a lot of money in glass. That sure was great to vent. Tomorrow evening, I'm hopefully going to be playing with my friends Canon 30D. Hopefully I can come to a decision either Canon or Nikon.
*edit - I also forgot to mention that what I want to shoot and what I plan on shooting in the future is automotive, sports, club events, events in general, models, and landscape. Hell I'll take photos of everything! LOL, but seriously, mainly the one's I listed seem like what I would be shooting.
Another thing I forgot to mention is that I hear Nikon's wireless flash system is better than Canon's
AcuraLegend 09-21-2007, 03:51 AM I was loosing faith in Nikon as well until they announced the D3 and D300. It's good to know I'll be able to jump to full frame eventually.
Anyway, both my roommates shoot Canon. Most of my friends shoot Canon. I honestly see no reason to switch. You're already invested in one brand. Sure each has its pros and cons, but I don't really think any of them are enough to make the switch.

:rotfl: I spent so long trying to figure out if "Jeff Creech Photography" was really on your desktop...
But PFT! My PRINT is not to be compared to your mere posters :p

hahaha please explain to me the difference between a print and a poster. I was under the impression a poster was just a large print.
But no the computer picture isnt real. Check the reflection off the desktop.
AcuraLegend 09-21-2007, 09:51 PM lol I actually had some problem answering that question, but I think this excerpt sums it up nicely.
An original fine art print is the creation of a work of art, by an artist, in the print medium. What distinguishes it from printed reproductions is the artist’s direct participation in the creation of the image. It differs dramatically from a poster, which is a mechanical reproduction of an original work of art. Although there are examples of posters that can be considered works of art because of the artist’s involvement in the reproduction process, most posters are executed without the participation of the artist, or even produced posthumously. This will never be the case with original prints. They are new works created by the artist and, for the reason, they are considered within the larger body of the artist’s work.
- The Original Print, Chris Byrne
But yeah I've had some bad experiences in the past with getting prints done online (cropping, colors, exposure) so it was nice to actually have control over the entire process. I never realized how difficult it is to correctly calibrate everything to get the colors you want to come out.
dc5ivtec 09-21-2007, 09:59 PM I stand corrected. These are one-offs, so I guess I should call them prints. I'm probably going to sell a few to the owner of the del sol though, so that one could very shortly become a poster. haha
Yeah, I'm really torn between a 17 in mac book pro, or a Canon Pixma Pro9000. My online printer is great though. In the long run I would assume the cost of producing my own prints would be less, but since I only sell a couple of prints a month, I can't see the sense in it. The mac book is just so expensive though. Ugh, decisions!
AcuraLegend 09-21-2007, 10:04 PM Yeah I think a new computer would be the better investment in this case. You can always just charge the client for the cost of getting prints done anyway. I'm using an Epson 3800 that my school has. It comes out to be about $6/print after ink and paper.
But then again why get a new computer when there's so much camera gear out there to buy!
AcuraLegend 09-21-2007, 10:08 PM On a side note... holy shit your prints go for a lot of $$! haha

Because I've lost so many sales because I don't have a laptop. And that money from sales goes towards new camera equipment! :)

hahaha not really. My 8 x 10's are pretty competitive. I figure high volume-low margin with the smaller prints. Since I probably wont get many sales with the posters(I mean larger prints :p ) I put in place a large profit margin. Basic business strategies. :D
AcuraLegend 09-21-2007, 10:10 PM you can buy my repeatedly dropped macbook pro for a couple thousand :shady:
EDIT: which reminds me i need to make a prints page for my site now
king kumo 09-22-2007, 02:57 AM where do you print your pics jeff?
OptimizedDucati 09-22-2007, 04:20 AM Two different methods of smoothing. I left the iso high on accident so the images are grainy. I'm not really worried about anything in the picture except the skin. Which one looks better to you guys?
