Bokeh

Bokeh is derived from the Japanese word meaning "blur." The beauty of the Bokeh is performed by the subtle pleasing blur of the background to bring emphasis on the subject. It requires more than just making backgrounds blurry. It is an art form that requires time and experience to perfect. It requires a good eye to see a vision and it's possibilities. To masterfully blend foreground and background, yet displaying the subject in all it's wonder, that is the art of the "Bokeh."

Rules as follows:

1) Contest is open to all members of CRSX.

2) By submitting your photo, you understand that it will be posted on the web and others that are not members of CRSX will see your work and could be downloaded by anyone. Your work will not be sold to anyone other than by you. If someone is interested in purchasing your photo we will direct that person to you and you can work it out.

3) Only one entry is allowed per participant.

4) Once the entry has been submitted no resubmits will be allowed.

5) MINOR post processing allowed. Minor means cropping, sharppening, slight color tweaks, and level adjustments. No merging of several photos or chops. Make sure to resize to meet size requirment. (no borders and no watermarks)

6) Submission format. All entries must be able to meet the 800x600 posting requirement. Please don't submit other sizes like 640x480. We want all photos the same size to be as fair as possible.

Email all entries to: crsxphoto@yahoo.com

Subject line should be: CRSX Contest - Month - Contest Title
Body should include the following:
- CRSX username
- Title of your photo
File naming convention: title_of_my_photo.jpg

Example:
Subject: CRSX Contest - January - Things at night
Body:
Danger Mouse
A Scary Ghost
Attachment: a_scary_ghost.jpg

7. Any submissions that do not follow the guidelines will not be posted.

8. Topic will be posted on the 1st of the month.

9. Submissions will be from 1st until the 15th of the month. No exceptions for late submissions.

10. All submissions must be taken during the time of the current contest.

11. Voting will be open from the 16th until the 21st.

12. All submissions will be posted anonymously. No signatures please.

13. Winner will be posted on the 22nd.

Prizes:
1. Winner of the contest will get to choose the next topic.

2. Winner will receive a $5 gift card to Starbucks. In order to receive the gift card you must be willing to provide me your mailing address so I can mail it to you. If you don't provide the address then you don't get the card.

Well, I was looking for inspirational write ups, but I keep getting just copy and paste definitions. When I took art classes the teachers gave subjects with words of inspiration, so I try to do the same.

1st and perhaps easiest way is a very wide aperture lens (f/1.8 or f/1.4)
You can combat this if you have a narrower aperture lens through the use of distance between the camera, subject and background.

This was shot at f/3.2, but at 200mm, the bokeh was fairly even

I do it by saving the image onto my desktop. Then I right click the image and look at the properties. I bet there's a better way where you can just look at it through the browser, but I don't know how to do it.

If you right click...with the Opanda software, you can view the exif data direcly on the screen.

Yeah, I almost pulled the plug on the f/1.4 but I didn't have enough cash.
If I could sell the 1.8 for anything other then $80 I might have.

1.4 is too shallow most of the time. f2 is better
