If you leave your shutter open for a long period of time in a thunder storm will it catch the lightning?

Ye it will.
Just close the aperture and open it in 20-30 second intervals.
A lot of luck is involved

Tripod, long shutter (20-30 seconds or bulb mode) and be under cover.
you can also do short 5-10 second shots as well.

i've tried my hand at this a few times, but never took a picture worth posting. I need more lightning storms to practice on.

Here are some I took the other night.

(I had these in the Random Shots thread).

Settings on most were either 30 or 45 second shutter, 100 ISO, f/3.5, all at 10mm, with canon EFS 10-22 f/3.5-4.5 USM.
