it was $199, but I see it's gone up to $219, still a great deal.
I might look at it in a few weeks

Yeah, I'm thinking about it.
Good, faster replacement to the kit lens.
Some have said if it's not a perfect copy, it's a simple send to Sigma for fixing.

the only thing that's holding me back right now is the zoom range

it's faster.
if you get a good copy then yes.
although, i have no problems with my kit lens, just not fast since I prefer f/2.8 or faster.

I've seen a lot of people in Nikoncafe that well, not neccisarily swear by this lens, but have seen some very good outcomes with it in use, and its another fairly inexpensive lens with VR. I was actually thinking about getting this or a used 80-200 f2.8 and went with the f2.8. Check on the cafe and look for the thread dedicated to this and another lens, i forgot what section its in.

It's a very highly regarded "non-pro" lens. It's got AF-S, which is a huge plus for D40 users. I'd say jump on it and sell your other 70-300.

If money was no object, 70-200 vr all the way
if money was but i had at least $800, 80-200 af-d or af-s, f/2.8
on a budget, the 70-300 vr
