so im looking at an E46 M3 or an AP2 S2K.....my questions is do s2k's have any common problems i should be aware of?

freakvision03

besides driver error, theres really nothing to worry about that im aware of.

Is it going to be a DD? If so I'd go for the M3, more comfortable and practicle, way higher baller status and is faster.

For a track car I'd take the S2K and build it.

yeah its gonna be a daily driver. imhaving such a tough time is cause im really picky at what im looking for lol....like i want a M3 in Laguna Seca Blue with black leather interior but majority is grey. and for an S2000 i want white with a red interior but an AP2 i love both but i dont know what to go with lol

You'd have to be on crack to pick an s2k over an e46 m3, and that isnt saying the s2k isnt a great car either.

:iamwiths:

It's not like the m3 isn't a track performer itself. Given the chance, I'd take an m3 over an s2k anyday. Just be aware of the difference in cost of ownership between the two, i would assume the m3 is a lot more expensive to maintain.

 Says the man with the EP3......

OP: What type of car are you looking for? Do you need cargo room? How many passengers do you typically carry? Do you want a convertable? Will you be driving through heavy traffic? etc, etc, etc. These are all questions you need to ask yourself before purchasing.

well i dont really care about cargo room and i dont care about passengers and if i wanted a convertable the M3 also can be a convertable so i really dont know what to pick lol...i know M3 an S2K are 2 completely different cars but iono its hard to say why im picking between the 2...i like both of them lol thats why im trying to find out if any of them have any problems i should be aware of

I've not heard about any problems other than if they've not been taken care of properly. If you want to know more about the S2K's you can go to www.s2ki.com

Well, this is from opinions from people who HAVE the s2000 and who have test drove or drove friends cars.....

"Wow this is by far the most superior transmission i've ever drove, and thats dozens of performance cars" -- EmilDo0DzE

"S2000 transmission = f1 driving experience" -- unkn0wns0urce

"This car is one of the funnest cars i ever driven, in fact can i go for another ride" - sp33dm@n

"I've driven all sorts of cars from muscle to imports, the honda s2000 might be the nicest shifting car i've ever experienced. The gearbox is probally the best ever built." - Topspeed503

If you think the s2000 is better than an m3 I'd suggest suicide.

There is a razor blade in your desk drawer. Im not telling you to use it, just telling you that its there.

Depends on how many miles the m3 has.

well the S2000 does have one of the best tranny's i've ever felt...i've driven the M3 and the tranny on that feels kinda....loose? lol the one car i have driven that felt close to the S2K is an Sti though

if you're now looking at M5s, the S2000 is not the car for you. You will be disappointed with it's creature comforts (or lack of). I still love it.

imo BMW is shit in reliability. but the driving experience covers up it's flaws....

yes i own a BMW and i'm telling you to get one ONLY if you have warranty on the thing or at least know the car like the back of your hand.

depending on what year M3, BMW was doing free routine maintenance with the cars and it is transferable. It was up to 50K in miles I think.

m3 > s2k............... Take it from a previous s2k owner. Clutch goes with the quickness, rattles everywhere, slow, weak rear end, every mod is expensive, back aches from driving only 30 min and tranny issues.

I would not ask anyone to buy an s2k. Maybe if it was a chick who wanted a convertible. Absolutely not for beating on at all.

:: This was my personal experience not the whole of the s2k community. ::

Also, If I were to get a m3 it would be Imola Red SMG. Built in launch control also.

Get An S. As for baller status most people don't know what an S is and think it's a BMW. The E46 just gives it away... Too many BMW's going around nowadays anyways... I daily drive my S and it's fine. If you don't have kids that is.

As for torque. Who needs a lot of torque when the engines spinning so high? And why do you think F/I s2k's are so insanely fast?
GO to s2ki for more info. Search around.

I know you are all gonna bash me, but i own an e36 m3. I will say this the maintenance really isnt that bad on them, I mean car can be pretty much beaten. The car is fun as hell and i am not saying that the s2000 isnt but both are great cars just your comparing a bmw to a honda. Most Bmws have forged internals and i have seen just m3s taken there stock motors to 600hp with out problems. The fact is you have a tough decision to make, but i have never found reliability an issue. Even if i did thats why i keep the acura for back up.

I like hondas too thats why i own both, I just personally like bmws slightly more.

i would not buy an M3 for $20K on ebay.

good M3's are still going for $30-$40K, easy.

the only M3 i would buy would be one i picked up on a BMW lot from their CPO program. end of story.

out of the two cars, it totally depends on what kind of car you want. do you want luxury, baller status, big, fast? or do you want a little roadster that spins to 9K that everyone stares at? hehe. i have both cars in my garage (well, not an M, but a 330Ci ZHP which is basically an M3 without the souped up motor) and i can't compare the two. both cars are daily driven also.

rsxfactor
10-30-2007, 02:23 PM
I dont think you can really compare a ZHP to an E46 m3. Yes the ZHP is quick and handles awesome but still no M. If you want a reliable 400hp with bolt ons get an M3. If you want 400hp out of your s2000 better turbo. See the difference. M3s are also goin in autotrader too cheap, I wouldnt buy one off of ebay neither just showin an example.

Never had the experience to drive an M3 or M5, but I did test drive an S2000 for the first time this weekend. Needless to say, it was nothing like I thought it would be. I've only been in RSX Type-S's, Accords, TSX's and Pilots and this was by far the fastest thing I have driven. Its definitely tight quarters in there and its loud and rough, but its fast, has a great transmission and gearbox and is just fun to drive. I'm still torn between the S2000 and the BMW 135i when it comes out...its going to be a tough call.

If you can afford it, M3 hands down, especially for a DD, I'd take a coupe. Softops get old in the rain and especially snow if thats an issue for you.

wrong forum but does anyone know any common problems for M3's?

Vanos failure in early model M3's. Rear sub-frame gets torn out, a common problem with stock and lowered cars. If you get SMG, SMG pump sometimes fails. Couple of other things too...

Depends on the year you find. Higher mile cars cost less, and are around 30K. If you want a higher year with low miles, you better be ready to spend in the mid 40s..
