well ive always loved the S2000's, and always wanted one. i've had a base 5 speed RSX for 6 years now, 92k runs great, but i think its time to move on. i bought a 300ZX twin turbo i was going to rebuild over summer, but with gas and my budget already tight, im just going to sell it after all; gas mileage is very, um, not good.

thing is, i'll have just enough cash plus what my RSX is worth to pull of an AP2; convince me to do it  im also considering a new 350Z ('08 w/ twin TB's and the VQ35HR motor) or an RX-8, but gas mileage and insurance is a key issue. i'll be turning 25 soon so my insurance rates should decline somewhat, but what was you approx percentage increase vs a base or type S RSX? what MPG do you S2k guys average? (and how do you drive?)

i'll probably go for a used '05-ish with around 40-50k on it, wait about a year, and supercharge it.

How much are you looking at spending for an AP2?

It seriously is a great car. What a fantastic driver's car. It's a small car i.e. no room for anything but it's so rewarding to drive it hard! It just begs for more and more.

You must have a need for speed if you want to supercharge it. It is seriously fast enough. I constantly find myself speeding. You just want to drive it hard all the time. :D

My AP2 is my first RWD car and I will never go back to FWD or how I like to call it... WWD (wrong wheel drive). I'll stick to FWD for commuting purposes only. :)

Waking up in the morning, putting the key into the ignition and hitting that START ENGINE button just brings a smile to my face every time. Revving to 8000 is pure bliss. From everything to the steering wheel, shifter/transmission to the digital tach, seats and top down goodness... I wouldn't have it any other way!

Thank you Honda.

:)

Hope that helps your decision a little bit.

I should also mention that I test drove a 350Z before I got my AP2. Talk about a big heavy car. It totally wasn't for me. The S2000 is so nimble. Just toss it into the turns and go. The S2000 is the easiest car to drive.

Once again, thanks Honda.

:D

My first question is, how much are you looking to get for your rsx and 300zx combined? A lot of people get way too optimistic about values when they start getting in situations such as yours.

RSX 10k including mild part-out, 300ZX $6500. i can get $4k together in a month easily. im not spending more than 20K, even if i have to wait a yr to pull it off.

If you are worried about gas prices a 350z(15mpg I know for a fact) and the rx8 are stay away cars. If I were you, I would get an AP1 and then get an older car (late 90's) as a daily driver that gets good mpg. I could not see driving the s2000 every day, it would seem to much of a hassle.

I DD my S2k and its totally fine...whats the hassle? Its fun to drive, responsive, amazing handling, girls check you out constantly, men despise you / wish they had one. And the sound of 9k RPM redline is like sweet sweet music.

It really depends on your situation. If you need a car that seats more than 2 people, you're claustrophobic, can't stand a somewhat hard riding car (You'll get used to it), ,can't stand driving a manual all the time,or are a packrat that has to have a lot of storage space. then yeah an S2000 wont work.

I DD mine and it's my only car, however I'm a single guy, and I use mainly public transit to get to SF, so YMMV. An S2000 is a good DD if you have simple needs and don't mind the space...or rather the lack of space in the car.

I got my S2k for $16K. It's an AP2, and it had 38K miles when I got it. I have to say that I'm the exception and not the norm, expect to pay around 18-19 for a AP2 with decent mileage, and even more if its white (I'm being serious too) . Also, I had to go all the way to Arizona to get my car.

As for fuel economy, the AP1 gets better mileage due to the dinky tires on the rears. The AP2s get worse fuel economy due to the staggered tire setup, but the hit isn't too bad. Be sure to check if the car you buy has decent tires on it.

Here's the fuel economy I get on my S2000:

I finally picked up a S2000 this past March, and I still have my RSX-S. I drive both, but I find myself driving the S2K most of the time. The S2k is an amazing car, and the only car for less than $40k I have ever driven that I liked more than my RSX.

350z sounds awesome and looks cool, but it's heavy and doesn't get good gas mileage, plus everyone and their mom has one.

RX-8 just doesn't have anything in particular that makes it a must-buy, or even more tempting than other cars in it's class/price range.

I was torn between getting an ap2 or an ap1 and ending up finding an ap1 with a 2.2L bottom end, drove it one time and I was sold.

Not a fan of the RX8 outside of its unique looks. The Z's are nice and can be real movers if you pick up the right model. The newer 370s are much better.

If your 300zx is already paid for, I would just keep it. You can use it as a daily or for rainy weather. The S is a great car and is fun to drive, but can be intimidating and unforgiving if pushed in slick conditions.

On average, the AP2s get 17-22 mpg with a few vtecs daily. If you shift before 5k rpm and vtec it once or twice a day, your mileage could hit closer to 24mpg on the far end - depending on tires and city/vs/highway driving). A test pipe on an AP2 will increase your mpg (mine is up to 27mpg with less than 5k shifting and occasional vtec (too much traffic to really push her like I want, but it is still fun to drive). Either way, the S is not a car to get if you are worried about gas prices (each fill up will require 10-12 gallons using premium which is just over $4/gallon today).

Think about what your needs are first and then see if the S can meet most if not all of those needs. If not, then perhaps it isn't the right time for you to get one.

Good luck!
