as long as it falls between the two dots (as per the owner's manual), then it's fine.

the distance between the two dots is about one quart. if you fill it to the top dot, that might be the reason why you use 5.8 quarts.

This is from the helms

"5.80 (6.1US qt)for engine overhaul
4.74 (5.0US qt) for engine including filter"

the honda filter holds ALOT less oil than the amsoil or mobile 1 filters, so 5.8 is about right with a much bigger filter, and filling it to alittle over halfway between the dots

I also put the whole front end of jackstands and let it drip for about an hour while I eat lunch or something too

I hate to be this way, but I've been changing oil for years on the side, and did it for 2 years for honda. I promise you, a type S with a non honda filter takes 5.2-5.8 depending on the filter and its size obviously. It also depends on whether or not you fill it to halfway between the dots or right to the top dot.
I too changed oil for a year at a local shop. I fill up my car to the second dot. 6 quarts every time. My buddy's base also consumes 6 quarts (turboed). My car's not leaking any oil either - I check it before i change the oil (every 5k miles with currently Castrol Syntec 5w30).

Dan7u, to answer your question... what I do is fill up the car with 5 quarts, then start it up to check for leaks, and leave it running for about 15 seconds to make sure the oil pressure's up and through the filter and flowing nicely. Then I turn the car off, let it sit for about 15-30 seconds, and check the dipstick, at this point, for me at least, it's always at the bottom dot (1 quart low) so i throw in another quart. The car calls for 6 quarts every time.

I think it'd be more beneficial if you drain what you can for 10-15 minutes on jacks, then pour in maybe 1/4 quart of new oil, then let that drain for 5 or so minutes. But I'm not saying I don't agree with your method - I'm all about taking food/beer breaks!

Fortunately enough getting in the other car and getting some lunch and getting back usually takes about an hour so thats how long I wait. I also, pull the drain plug, let that go for 15, then pull the filter which lets some more drop down , then I leave for lunch. I just cant force myself to throw half a bottle of 0w-30 amsoil in trash I costs too much. I might start buying a quart of mobile 1 to flush with though, I've been considering it for a while.

nah..no outward pressure...just excess frothing.
if you're filled to the valve cover, your crankshaft wont whip in the oil because its completely immersed in the oil. When you try and start the car, the engine will lock up because parts are trying to move but the oil wont let it because it cant compress.

The crank will whip in the oil if you add like 2 quarts over the max. When i change my oil, it takes about 5.5-5.7 but i just put in the whole 6. puts me a bit over the line but its ok.
also, if you add too much oil and your car begins to vibrate more than usual, then your crank is probably whipping in the oil.

6 quarts of RP and a M104 filter brings it just shy of the top mark.
