USAF TSgt awarded Bronze Star for pushing paperwork

Interesting to say the least.

Your thoughts?

Air Force folks, not trying to bash on your service branch, but I hope you understand that this is total BS. I can't speak for the Army, but in the Navy/ Marines, something like this would warrant a pat on the back only.

This bullshit totally undermines the true meaning of earning such an award. People have gotten shot at (or worse) for earning this medal. She gets this for basically doing her job.

Going back and reading.. That is very ridiculous. Doesn't deserve a bronze star. Maybe an achievement or Air Force Commendation but not a damn bronze star. But who am I to decide. Just a lowly E-4

I have a little "in the know" info.

She was supporting the Army, and her chain of command was very Army-heavy. It turns out that BSMs are handed out like CANDY in the desert for Army FGOs and SNCOs. This time was no different.

FYI, you have the right to refuse a decoration in the USAF. The medal citation still goes in your file, but attached to it goes an Memo for Record stating that you disagree with the award and are refusing it.

This NCO had that option, but it looks like she's not taking it.

FYI, if I did my pilot job the way USAF Finance typically does theirs...well, let's just say that we'd lose jets on a weekly basis.

Your not far off from the fact sir lol... a BSM (w/o a "V" Device) is nothing more than a "deployment" MSM given for service. You are right that mainly only Sr. Non-Comms and Field Grade types are the ones who usually get these awarded in the Army for deployments. I will say though that my personal opinion with this award is that it doesn't mean squat unless there's a V-device attached to it (meaning he/she actually earned it doing something OUTSIDE the gate)... It's also my opinion that the military awards system has been broke since the beginning. Anyone of us can count the numerous times we have seen people not do a damn thing besides their JOB and get awarded for it because of who they worked for.

I thought I would actually have some say as a First Sergeant in getting awards pushed for some of very deserving individuals... only to get shot down by higher. This while at the same time watching the SAME higher give awards to individuals who "worked" for them. Individuals who only performed their basic duties but were there in the "limelight" with the higher ups all the time...

At the end of the day it's all about WHO puts in and pushes for these awards... Sadly I know that I will continue to see several very deserving folks not receive proper levels of recognition. As a leader I can only keep trying to push awards up for those deserving of recognition within my range fan...

Sounds like what happened to my unit, Major needed his CAB - Combat Action Badge, got on a blackhawk, flew to where we were taking contact... without letting us know, thus restricting our rods, meaning no calling for fires, so our mortars were useless to fire.

Turns out he got his CAB for flying overhead, and a pending Bronze Star for finding where the insurgents were... even though we called up for a fire mission, and already sent up the grid of the insurgents.

Some officers never cease to surprise me.

Best part is one of our medics in our other platoon, was sent up for a Bronze Star for; patching up a Squad Leader who has been hit, and two Afghan National Army dudes, and in the process picked up his m4 and shot an insurgent who was about to fire a RPG at the CCP. was denied. He recently was just hit with shrapnel from a RPG, now there's a possibility that he won't even walk again, re-submitted the Bronze Star, automatic denied again.

You know the sad thing is that she will probably get a pretty good job once she retires from the military.

Just reading the article, i know of several private sector jobs she could apply for and obtain an entry level position based on her work experience alone.

But this is total bullshit.

In the army thats probably the best you'd get. A certificate of achievement or a nice bullet on your NCOER that may (not guaranteed) warrant an excellent. I watched officers in my unit on past deployments get bronze stars just because they are officers.

KIA's get a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star

This war has shit all over that medal. My highest award was an MSM as an E4 for finishing a mission that started with me, 2 E7s and 2 CW2s. Everyone had to leave for some reason and I had to finish the mission alone and with zero discrepancies. I didn't even know I was put in for the award
