Oside Jimc's CTSC RSX-S: Optimized

The above graphs represent the gains seen with new SC specific camshafts (dark blue dotted line) in comparison to stock K20A2 performance (light blue dotted line) as tested with the following components:

- K20A2 RSX-S (internally stock bottom end - 11:1cr)
- Injen CAI
- Comptech Supercharger
- Pulley Boys Custom 3"
- JR Race Header
- Comptech 2.5" catback exhaust
- Hondata K-Pro
- 650cc RC Injectors
- Walbro 255

Oside Jimc is no stranger to the ways of the Dynapack. In fact, if it were not for his personal efforts to establish bonafide baseline tunes, you wouldn't be reading about this today. He laid the groundwork and made it very easy for us to focus on the task at hand. Jim, thank you very much for volunteering your car for testing. It is always a sensitive issue, and represents a fair amount of risk to both parties. I am happy to report positive results.

Much appreciation must also go to Church Automotive and Epic Motoring for enduring a 7-day, non-stop testing environment. Their collaborative effort is second to none, and the overall success we've attained as a team would not be possible should there have been any weak links. Thanks fellas for the outstanding work!

So 11.5 lbs, with 91 octane?? What a/f??

Wonder how much a 3 inch exhaust would help?? I'd say 10 ish WHP IMO.

ETA for cam release date? How much? Any base map supplied??

Nice work Jim...Ron can't wait to see how these do with JRSC. I would assume similar gains.

NICE. You see how the cams give that boost (pun intended) in the boost levels. It's almost 20 peak WHP!

Unocal pump 100 - AFR 11.5-12.0. The 2.5" comptech exhaust was removed for some runs and incurred no penalty with it in place. NONE. If there is room for improvement in the exhaust (and I do believe there is) - a proper 4-1, 2.5"-3" true merge collector header much like we have in use on the 2240cc motor, I think would be a good thing to investigate.

Email the manufacturer for details. Tuned base maps are useless if they aren't provided!

Not only peak, but look at the area under the curve. You'll feel that driving, as there's more available power sooner within the powerband.

That's a feature I was most pleased to see implemented and executed flawlessly. Talk about seamless power delivery. Psi for Psi, this SC car would hold its own against a turbocharged vehicle at the same boost. Maybe even smoke it? I'm not one to talk smack, but Jim and Daniel would probably have fun benchracing until his new turbo kit is ready.

Now that these are ready for release, we'll be able to wrap up the 'other' FI applications...

Testing is to commence ASAP.

exactly. And the good thing is, it's not something that we have to refill or switch on. So how do these perform on a car running less boost (we are only running 3.2" pulley). It seems that the higher the revs go, the better the cams perform. Definately can see more power by building up the valvetrain and reving to 9K

Two words, HOLY SHIT!! My car did that??
Ron I can't even begin to express my gratitude for allowing me to be a part of your development. The HP is nice, but that torque, so much area under the curve, and so much sooner is amazing, I can't wait to get it on the track, too bad I have to wait until the 12th for my private track day to find out. With all that torque I'd better start shopping for some slicks .
I wonder how much more it can make with the aftercooler?? Hmmm, I can't wait to get my hands on one to find out.
Do you want me to come up tomorrow and put the 9psi (3.3") pulley on so you can tune / dyno at the lower boost?

I'd love to see that also b/c I'll only be running the 9lb pulley also(I see 9.7ish lbs) and pump gas.

If they can make +30 WHP with 9lb pulley and pump gas I'll definitley pick up a pair.

Ron, Jim -- congratulations! This is awesome.

Ron, a while ago we had the following exchange:

Conrad: Ron, since most of us have been told that staying with the stock cams is generally best for FI, could you give us the basics on use and benefit of third party cams for supercharged engines? I am eager to learn from you on this topic. And a great, general thanks for the incredible contributions you have made to this site.

Ron: Sure. When FI applications are explored, stock camshafts are generally recommended as opposed to aftermarket cams primarily for the mild amount of overlap they possess. Until now, aftermarket camshafts have been released to appease the NA market. Here's a simple analogy that will help illustrate how valve overlap helps NA tuning. Imagine a drag race where one begins the race from a dead stop, yet the other gets a rolling fly-by. Overlap is that ricer. It literally gives the intake charge a head-start at filling the combustion chamber.

This concept does not fare well for FI. As you may know already, overlap allows boost and fuel to blow right through and ignite a good portion of the mixture well out of the combustion chamber through the exhaust. This causes high EGT's. This is very bad. So, for a proper FI camshaft to perform well - overlap must be reduced or eliminately completely. This is what IPS-Kpsi's were designed and engineered to do. Moreover, the ideal FI cam profile will have significantly large lobe area conducive to boosted application. And because there no longer exists an overlap condition, the pressurized intake charge will see less restriction at the valve due to the greater amount of valve lift realized with IPS-Kpsi cams. Lastly, the result from meticulously analyzing valve motion and harmonics, IPS-Kpsi cams allow VE to scale exponentially under boost, with superior valvetrain stability. We'll see torque curves and HP powerbands hold very strong past their peaks, unlike what is seen with stock camshafts. FI amplifies the engine's natural ability to make power. We like to think our cams make the K-series, supernatural.

Conrad: Thanks for those elaborations. A specific question: Your average supercharger will be engaged at most 5% of the driving time. The other 95% of the time the bypass valve will be open. So for the most part the engine runs NA. How will special FI cams perform under non-boost operation in terms of power, drivability, mileage and emissions?

Ron: Due to this highly specific question, I will need to make observations once they're installed/tuned in a JRSC RSX-S to say with any certainity.

===========

Now that the cams have been installed and successfully tested in a Comptech Supercharger engine, can you follow up on the last question?

Conrad
