Recommended Oil Change Intervals?

Hello:
I would like to get some opinons on how often I should change my base RSX's oil. According to the manual it says to change it every 10k miles/1 year whichever comes first under normal conditions or every 5k miles/6 months for severe conditions. I feel changing it every 3k miles/3 months is a waste of money, especially when Acura recommends I can go much longer intervals. I was thinking about following the 5k mile interval, even though I don't drive under severe conditions. I do drive mostly city, and mostly for only 30 mins. I also drive *very* conservative, never speed, rarely VTEC, usually change gears at a lil under 3k rpms. I was thinking about it though and since I really don't drive my car that much, and only go to school(20 mile roundtrip) 3 days a week, it will probably be over a year before I hit 5k miles. I did read somewhere that someone recommended changing your oil at earlier intervals if you drive under 30 mins due to water getting in or something? So my question is what would you recommend as a good oil change interval? I'm now thinking every 6 months change oil and filter, but even that sounds a little too often. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

btw a little OT but what do you guys think of Purolator PureOne filters? I've searched and it seems people think its too restrictive, but when I was lurking the forums on bobistheoilguy it seems like a lot of people recommended them as a really good filter for the price. Just want to know because I received 4 brand new ones as well as 2 oem filters from a fellow member who totalled his RSX.

30 minutes of driving, even in the city should be enough to evaporate any condensation that might build-up in your crankcase. Short trips that don't allow the engine to fully warm-up are a big factor in the "severe driving conditions". To feel secure, I would do a spring/fall (that way you don't have to climb under her in the winter cold or summer heat if you do-it-yourself) 6 month interval or 5,000 miles whichever comes first.
You can't go wrong with a Purolator Pure-One filter! I'm the "oil change guy" in my family and take care of 9 cars--all of which get the Puro--everything from a '75 Cutlass to a '04 Civic! Hope I helped a fellow senior member!

some guy here proved that it mobil 1 oil and mobil 1 filter can really last for 10k. my dad didnt believe it so he called the honda dealer mechanic and ask if its true. the mechanic said it will last if your not redlining , he said if you want the best for your car you should change it every 5kmiles. now i dont know who to believe.

anyways i change it every 5k intervals. better be safe than sorry.

I'm going to go with 5k change intervals which with my low driving will probably be only once a year. After I use up my 14 quarts of Valvoline 5W-20, I think i'm going to switch over to Mobil Clean 5000 5W-20 along with my Purolator PureOne filters, it seems to fit my application pretty well.

Thanks again for the info.

most people I have talked to change the oil every 5k miles. Thats what I do and have never had a problem with it. THere is a lot of analysis on oil and filters on this board. Do a search and you will find a lot of information

The 3k "rule" was developed around the strength and viscosity of regular non syth oil.

i would stick with the 3K miles or 3 months rule... engine oil is one of the vital element of our car so it would be safe to maintain it regularly IMO...
