Piston Material? 4032 or 2618?
I'm doing some research on piston design and material and came accross the option of having the piston made out of SAE 4032 or 2618.
From what I have read at http://www.pcis.net/thehook/may.htm it seems like 4032 is the way to go. Anyone got any mor insight they could give me on which is best matrial to use between these two. |

U read the info in the link? JE pistons offers pistons made in both materials. I asked CP what they used and they said 2618 so then I wanted to know what are the properties of that metal. Titanium is best I guess but between the other alloys i think 2618 is the weakest

Cp is good so is JE so is many other companies.
forged pistons are good if tuned and done right

also from that link you can see that Custom pistons are the best way to go since off the shelf wont necessarily meet your reqs
so whether its custom JE or custom CP you shoudl go custom based off your deck height and with the features you want on there

2618 is what you want for maximum effort race engines, or maximum power production. 4032 is better for daily driver/weekend racer looking for low noise and great engine longevity.
2618 is stronger, but 4032 is better for anything to be used for decent life.

but from what im reading, the 2618 has less silicone which makes it a weaker metal then 4032...also as for more efficiency, if u have 2618 it expands more in heat which then requires u to have a bigger piston to bore clearance which is less efficient right?
what u want is the smallest piston to bore clearance for max effort |

Quote:
The piston to bore clearance all depends on combustion temperatures. The higher the temperatures, the greater the clearance required. If too tight a clearance in run, the piston will scuff, or worse, seize in the bore.
