change thermostat

how hard is it to change my thermostat. My car was overheating on my way to school and no heat. I looked at my coolant and its fine. The only other thing i can think of being wrong is a bad thermostat.

Overheating and no heat? AND coolant is fine?

Where are you checking your coolant level?

If it was overheating because of a stuck thermostat then you would still have heat assuming there is coolant in there.

Something doesn't add up here.

I would check to make sure you dont have a crack anywhere in your radiator just to be sure

i will check my radiator but i cant until i can get my car to my school. And i do have coolant. The level of coolant was between min and max when the engine was hott. But my coolant gauge slowly climbs from c to above h if you let it cool down for an hour. But there was no heat it sucked. I just thought my gauge was broken until two mile later i started to see smoke coming from my radiator.

So you just looked at the overflow container?

Open the rad cap, almost guaranteed you are low on coolant.

hey i fixed the problem and no there wasnt any coolant on the floor or under my car. It turns out it was the thermostat just like i thought. It was getting stuck open and stuck closed. So i replaced it and that is a pain in the ass by the way. that top bolt is so damn hard with the intake manifold in the way but its all good now

No, do not leave the thermostat out. Your car will run optimally at operating temperature such as 185*-200*. If you leave the thermostat out, your car will take much longer to get to that temperature which can cause unnecessary wear on your engine and perform worse until it gets warm.

I don't think there's any wear implications if you leave it out. It will, however, be annoying as hell, because you will have no heat for a really long time. I would say aroun 20-25 minutes before it kicks in.

You must be an idiot if you don't think shit is going to wear worse without a thermostat. Stupidest comment ive seen in a long time. Your thermostat closes and opens, keeps coolant from going in and out of the block.cylinder head WHEN IT NEEDS to. If you leave it out, its just going to flow coolant all the time, might keep the car too hot might keep the car too cold. Its there for a reason bottom line.

Without a thermostat the engine will run too cold period. The only exception would be in scenarios where it would be too hot even with a thermostat, ie hard core beating the shit out it racing in mid-summer.

Yea exactly, and anyone who things running and engine cold is good then wow need to get your facts straight. If the engine runs too hot theres damage right there, if the engine runs too cold then bam yes theres damage there too. You're motor won't burn off deposits running too cold. You'll put extra heat and stress on the aluminum and other parts and bam theres more trouble. Its there for a reason, even people who race leave there thermostats in put run engine ice or some shit like that.

hey in these times you gotta be harsh. A lot of people make false comments and don't even think before they write things. Fair is fair, sometimes you gotta be mean to be nice.
