Car makes grinding noise on start up

Hey people, I guess this winter was the worst for my car, its probelm after problem. However, I am having an issue with my car on its start-up. Whenever its cold, the car makes a grinding noise (I will try and make a video of it) but its only on the initial cold start up. If I shut the car off and re-start it, it doesn't make that noise again. I have an auto start on my car so I really didn't notice it till about Novemeber, plus it doesn't always make that noise.

I checked my oil level and its fine, and I have narrowed it down to two possibilities: oil at some part (maybe cylinder wall) is completely drained, or my starter has a hard time disengaging from the flywheel.

Any input or if someone had this issue and knows a solution, I would greatly appreciate it.

BTW I had a compression test done around December and it passed.

it could be related to the starter.

I have the same problem. If I crank the car without starting, then it starts up fine. If I start it without the warm up crank, the sound is not nice. I am convinced that this is related to the timing chain tensioner, low oil pressure in the tensioner from cold oil prevents the chain slack from being taken up at initial startup and the chain vibrates. I will replacing it next month when I put in a new clutch, it will be interesting to see the condition of the tensioner and if a new one solves the problem. I know a lot of people have had similar symptoms that went away when they replaced the starter. I also want to see what the flywheel teeth look like, but I still think it's the tensioner.

Yah from what I've read in past threads when this happened to me,

If:
Crank and start = grind
but
Crank, no start, then crank & start = no grind
It's tensioner.

If Crank and start = grind
Crank, no start, then crank & start = grind
It's the starter (or possibly both).

If it is the tensioner shouldn't it always make a grinding noise if I crank right away and its cold out? I mean I wouldn't understand the logics behind why it would and wouldn't grind everytime. I might try swapping the starter out when it gets slightly warmer, but then that's when my problems usually go away. BTW, say if it is the chain and I am presuming this issue is kinda serious, what would happen if I didn't change the chain out? I probably will do it over the summer when I get a new clutch.

my chain doesn't vibrate during the first part of cranking due to the low rpms. once the car fires up and the rpms climb to 2000+ for the cold idle is when it goes. it only lasts for fraction of a second until the tensioner gets a good grip on the slack. the only thing a vibrating chain can do is snap (unlikely) or skip teeth on the cam gears. from most of the threads I have read, most people who have their timing jump have it happen at start-up, not high revs.

Oh then nvm, I guess its the starter in my situation cause it happens right after I crank when the rpms aren't even at or past 1000. Thanks for the quick responses people, I appreciate all the input.

Same thing here, On a really cold start up it sounds like a grind/belt squeal really quick then goes away. Doesn't happen everytime its cold, but occasionally.

i guess reviving an old thread is better than starting a new one.....
check the starter. i have the same problem and i know thats why..
just replace it when it takes a shit like i am or u can be "proactive" and change it now.

I have that weird ass noise too. When my car sits for couple days and its cold makes a weird noise like a #2 pencil being draged quickly on a desktop. Lasts only about 1-2 seconds. No idea why. Maybe ill catch it on a record one of these days.

Somebody has a thread on here how to fix this. The actuator that turns the flywheel doesn't pull back fast enough when it is really cold and it grinds for a second after the car starts. Mine has been doing it for 2 winters now, but only when its below 20 outside. Now I have remote start so at least I don't have to hear it anymore.

mine does it too, sounds like its my serpentine belt. I guess its not. Anyone know how much this would be to fix? And is this detrimental to our cars, because honestly it doesn't bother me too much. It only last a second.

112 for replacement starter at auto zone with trade in of core.

Labor can range i'd say around 200 to 300

You can fix it yourself by following helms manual.

My car has been doing the same noise and only when it's cold, not that it gets cold often here in FL. So I talked to a mechanic buddy of mine and let him hear it himself this morning, turns out it is the [b]Starter[b] for sure!

I had this a few months ago and I told the dealer it was the starter. He did not listen and changed the actuator instead. I brought it back, he replaced the starter and it was fixed.
