common myth... changing gears (shifting) while car is off

some people say that it is bad for the transmission to shift gears while the car is off, some say it doesnt make much of a difference... any one with legitimate automotive knowledge care to set the record straight?

Every time you shift gears you're adding some extremely tiny amount of wear to the vehicle, but it's not like you're hurting anything. You can switch gears when the car's off. You don't even need to put the clutch in to do it.

Shifting the car while it is off is better for the car than if you upshift "swiftly" or downshift without double clutching because you don't wear synchros.
