P1259, Replaced entire assembly, still on.

Ok, so first off ill start by saying that i have searched and i cant find any case where the solenoid and switch were replaced and the problem wasn't fixed.

I bought the car about a month ago and it was fine for the first week or two, then I did an oil change, fine for a few more days then the CEL came on, p1259, i searched around and it seemed like everybody just replaced the solenoid and it was fixed so i got a whole assembly (solenoid, oil pressure switch, heatshield, new gasket) from the dealer and installed it, cleared the code. drove for a couple days and it came back. sometimes ill clear the code and it will come back right away, sometimes it will comeback in an hour, or in a day or two.

Possible causes:
1. low oil pressure

2. chaffed wire

....anything else?

oil used for change was mobil 1 5w20 with a mobil 1 filter.

car is a 2002 Base 5-spd with 101,000miles

Should I be using a thicker oil? 1300 miles on oil change so far.

also it may be unrelated but it seems like my gas mileage has been getting worse since i got the car 27mpg first tankful, 25 second, 23 third, etc, im getting 20mpg now....

had the same problem on my 02 base 5 speed, and mine did get fixed with the new solenoid but i did realise that when i filled up with regular gas from bp it would trow the code with in a few miles even though it hadnt come on for months, since i replaced my solenoid ive been using 93 octane, i havent had p1259 come on for like 6 months but i have noticed that gas milage does go down but the car runs smoother too, btw i had like 60k miles and i use 5w20 oil

Not sure really how the gas octane rating is related to vtec operation....

However that raises a question, what parameters must be satisfied in order to let vtec engage?

obviously oil pressure must be high enough, but what else?

oil pan is mint, no dents, oil is still pretty clean and completely full...

new maybe development, i seem to remember the light coming on much quicker when its wet out, snow, or rain....so im really leaning towards a chaffed wire.

1. do you have K-pro
2. if you do, I had and issue with this code and the issue was a bad version of K-manager....try uploading a new version and reload your maps....
3. get a helms off the internet and shoot the P1259 troubleshooting guide

Yesterday i spent an hour looking through the wiring harness, i found no cut or frayed wires, i taped all the loom back up and put everything back together, i didnt clear the code.

this morning the light is still on but no longer in limp mode? really confused now...

A visual inspection of the wires isn't as thorough as an electrical inspection with a multimeter. Get the Helm and follow through the troubleshooting sequence.

I changed the Vtec solenoid and it fixed my problem. My car would be in limp mode from a cold start, but when I ran errands, I noticed the car was not in limp mode when the car is warm. The light would even turn off if I turned off and started the engine enough times (from hopping on and off the car)

Sometimes my light will come on with the car warm sometimes it will come on with it cold, sometimes it turns off when its cold, other times it turns off warm. really unpredictable. I just got back from the dealer, i bought an oil filter from them and put it on, topped up the oil lost in the old filter....

the light seems to be turning itself off more often now. once i get a warm day im going to do a full run through following the helms... that is if the new oil filter doesnt solve my issue...

if it keeps going ok like this, probably the previous oil filter wasn't giving you good oil pressure

almost a whole week with no CEL.

I can't believe this was fixed with a new oil filter....

The old filter was a mobil 1 filter and im pretty pissed right now at the amount of money i spent and it turns out to be a defective oil filter.

Im going thru this right now. My car has been in the dealership for over a week. First they told me I needed a new oil pan because there was a dent in it. With the snow we get here in buffalo Im not suprised I hit a piece of ice or something. Light still came on. So then they said that it could be my oil pump. They changed that, light still was on. Now they think its the Vtec solenoid. Part should be in tomorrow so we'll see if that works. So frustrating. At least they gave me a 2010 TSX for a loaner!

yeah, there was a pretty good dent on the oil pan so they decided to change the oil pump.

OK so now my light is BACK on and this time it is not intermittent. I finally grabbed my multimeter and went through all the wiring following the repair manual to the letter. everything checks out PERFECT!! the oil change is almost to 3000 miles.

The oil pressure is the last thing it could be unless its the ECU but how many people have actually seen a Base ecu unmodified go bad? and only throw one code? The dealer was $125 just to update my software, as far as im concerned this should be a free service? I mean its thier car, microsoft does not charge for updates of its products? IDK.

Im changing my oil today and im debating on switching to 5w30 or maybe even 10w30. can using such a thick oil screw up anything on these cars?

I am just sick of this problem and if the oil change doesnt fix it, im going to have to buy a whole new oil pump set-up....

Brand new OEM oil filter, mobil 1 10w30 oil, cleared the code, light comes back on 30 seconds of driving. I dont want to deal with this problem anymore, somebody else has to have had this trouble before and know the solution.....
