A year-ish ago, I picked up this1967 Oldsmobile froma guy around town. It had obviously been not taken care of for a while, and the owner previous to the guy that I purchased it from, a kid, had tried to make it driveable. So, me with the help of my *ahem* sponsor are working (slowly) to get it back to driveable. When we first bought it she looked like this
(Note the rust hole on the fender)
After a couple months of slow work, we had it down to:
and
The interior has been completely stripped, the wiring harness has been removed, and we have began the removal of rusted out body pieces.
Got some new parts
Trunk Floor
Performance Exhaust Manifolds, there is too little clearance between the frame and the block to fit headers :thumbsdow
Not much new, just an updated garage, and for now the car is up in the air. Literally. I installed a new lift, and to make room for all of the toys in the garage, we had to put it up:
and yes, that is a 2010 JCW Mini Cooper under there, with my RSX in the foreground
Trunk hole:
Engine waiting to get cleaned, painted, and bored with forged internals (New mounts are on top) :
and a complete new floorpan with a hole for the four speed manual transmission that were putting in:
A little background on the car, the car itself came from the factory with a turquoise-like color. It had a black vinyl covered roof, and a black interior. The engine that came with it was a 330 V8 mated with a 3-spd Turbo Hydra-Matic column-shift transmission. The plan is to keep with the turquoise color scheme, though a darker color with black stripes (Think Makita tools colors) and put a vinyl top on also. For the engine, we are going to have it bored and put in forged internals, and mate it with a Muncie M-21 4 Speed manual transmission with a HURST shifter :giggity:. The plan is to do a complete body off restoration, but we also are going to change certain components of the car to make it more fun to drive i.e. positronic rear differential (Better Burnouts), Custom Exhaust, Coilovers, and tons of new suspension components. Whether or not it gets blown is still up in the air, but I am all for it
So its not really an update, but I recently acquired some more parts towards completing the Oldsmobile, such as a replacement passenger side fender, because I dont feel like repairing the old one :
and a replacement passenger side door, because the skin of the original has some weird shit going on and I dont want to re-skin it:dontknow::
Anyway, sorry about the lack of progress for a while, but there has been no change until recently when the Mini was moved out from underneath and a plan was made to finish up the trunk area. I'll post some pics soon showing what needs to be done, but before we can weld in the new trunk floor the plan is to send the car for sandblasting. Before that though, we also need to remove the actual floor pan and also the bottom of the firewall because it is rusted as well!
Seeing as the budget for the Motor Build isn't quite as High as expected, Different options (Naturally aspirated instead of Blown) are being considered. A spare engine is at my house right now, pickled for many years and its a 6.1L 371cid V8 from a 1958 Oldsmobile Super 88. Depending on the availability of performance parts for either the stock 330 or the 371, we may go with either. So far a dual-carb setup has been considered, and a high-rise intake manifold has been found to suit the 371 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/OFY-5704/, so that may be the road we go down. The problem with the 371 is that although it comes stock with 300HP, that is still less than the 330 which came stock with 320 horsepower. The difference is that the 371 would give us more room to bore out and seeing as we would have to make some motor mounts for it, it would also give us room to run headers
So anyway, the last of the trunk has been cut out and now I'm mocking it up to make it all fit with the new parts, hopefully I will have a picture up before I go to work in a while.
Here are the support brackets in: (they are the shiny things
They will eventually be welded to the wheel wells, but the bottom of the wheel wells were too corroded so I removed them and will weld in some new extenders soon. After sandblasting
So anyway, the weather where I live has been kind of rainy the last two days and I havent had work, so I have made some progress on my project. It turns out that the reason why my trunk pan wasnt fitting right was because the fucker who tried to do this project before me (and consequently ruined it) had tried to rivet some pieces to the rusted out bottom of the wheel well and then cover it with caulk so it all looked like a single sheet of brown metal :firemad: After I realized this, I was able to air chisel away the rivets and the scraps of metal left and fit the trunk, as good as it will before I send the car away to be sandblasted. You can see where the riveted metal was on the left inner fender, it was where the dark blue colored metal is.
As you can see from the picture, it fits pretty well except the center piece, but the reason why the center piece doesnt fit well is because of the latch for the actual trunk lid, so some trimming will be necessary for the final welding, but that was expected because I plan to butt weld the trunk man to the car as opposed to lap welding it.
After getting the trunk pretty much done, I moved on to the real project, the actual floor. I have an entire floorpan ready to go in, but in order to fit it into the car, it is necessary to remove the doors, so that was done. Now I am in the process of just rough cutting the innermost part of the original floorpan out of the car so that all of the seat brackets and seatbelt brackets and other miscellaneous items that are welded to the floor can be placed on the new floorpan relatively unmolested. Its a bitch to cut around the under car braces, but it is necessary. I have no pictures of that because I couldnt get the lighting right to show the holes and braces that need to be cut around. Thats it for now, more updates coming soon!
Original Parts Group for the floorpans, but for the replacement rear seat and fender that I picked up, I actually used Desert Valley Auto Parts. I would Highly recommend OPG though, the reproduction pieces that they have are great and fit right in
I worked at a place that sold the brand goodmark restoration parts everyone that we sold them to liked them
