Engine wont start clicking fuel pump relay

Well i searched for answers first, so here goes..a few days ago,
i drove 15 miles on my gas light. parked the car in the heat of the day
at home thinking ill get gas as soon as i go out.at 11 that night tried to start
the car and it seemed like it was out of gas. feathered the gas pedal
and it seemed like it would start, but had no fuel. dumped a bit of gas in from my lawnmower
can and feathered the gas pedal till it started. immediately turned it off then back on no problems.
went and got gas. figured all was cool. the next morning same thing happened.
all this last week, if my car was off for an hour, same thing. busy running around started right up.
before i start pulling the relays and the fuel pump i was trying to figure out what relay
is what under my glove box (which is already pulled). my car is a bone stock base 5sp.
turning the key i think i hear the fuel pump prime, but i never noticed the relay noise before in this car or my 02 i drove for four years prior to my 06 i bought in 07.
when i turn the key i feel the relay(s) tick hard. just dont know where to start. the engine seems to turn over but doesnt start. where do i begin? replaced the starter 15000 miles ago with a used (under 25k) one. im at 130,000 now. thanks in advance.

My car did this too. It would click very rapidly. I always drive with my gas light on too!

My fix was buying a brand new battery and it fixed the problem.

Hope this works for you , and if you tried this already then just disregard what i said

i know the noise youre talking about, cause i had it right before i replaced my factory battery a couple of years ago, but trying to jump it with another car today also didnt help. thats when i noticed the loud click on, then off from the glovebox area. pulled the glovebox out, and ive got 4 relays, but i dont know whats what.. hoping someone has done this and knows.

first off, dont put gas from your lawnmower in your car lol. You should be running Shells Vpower or premium gas at all times

ha ha. good point. well base models dont have to have premium. my father in law thinks
letting it basically run out of gas killed the fuel pump. i really just need to know how to test the
felays and fuel pump.

If u hear the relays clicking, it is probably fine. Are u sure youre not getting fuel? Go grab a can of starter fluid just to be sure.

im officially captain dumbass. the click was in fact the relay readying...though ive driven a base rsx for 8 years, i guess i never paid attention. the fuel pump was making its usual noise (standard whirring of the prime) so i should've crossed that off before. maybe if i had pulled my spark plugs individually, grounded, and had someone turn the key, i would've noticed they were'nt firing. However, i didn't..i thought about the fact that i bought them for my 02 right before i traded it in and popped them in at 100,000 miles in this car (06) after they sat for 3 years in my garage amongst other rubble, just as i was about to order the new fuel pump...guess a new set of bosch platinum plus was a worthwhile $12 gamble. if i had bothered to remove them, i would've noticed the ends were soaked in fuel. im an idiot, but maybe someone can learn from my avoidance of the basics....fuel, air, and SPARK..
thanks to you guys who tried to help. much appreciated. i love this community. just gotta find out why the engine is governing at 5500 rpm now. i figure the vtec is screwed up now... gotta add v tec fluid i guess! i am kidding if you found this looking for a real answer.

Lol so it was bad spark plugs?

Sounds like your car is in limp mode. The car does this on its own to prevent further damage. Usually if you change your Spark plugs, you should be changing your oil/oil filter as well. They are all connected. Also did you check the clearances of the spark plugs before you put them in?

Glad your car is up and running.

well, i apparrently missed the knowledge (or supposed knowledge)
that bosch platinums dont make enough spark for the rsx.
thats what i had and what i put in again. oddly, it tried to not start again
after i went swimming yesterday. honestly i thought those plugs were pre-gapped.
im off go buy better plugs in a few i guess.

EDIT: DROVE IT FOR A BIT YESTERDAY AND THE REVS ARENT
LIMITED ANYMORE. still gonna get better plugs.i read on honda-tech
that the bosch platinums have caused this on other peoples rsx.
it said something like its not a resistor type plug. doubt ill
find NGK'S here in mayberry. idk for sure, but i do know spark is the issue.
Edit 2:its funny..after sitting all night, it started right up.maybe bosch plat plus
will work till i get some ngks.

well, got ngk laser iridium plugs. looking at the tips of them compared to the bosch
platinums, it makes sense it was running like shit. it still isnt firing 100%
right, but i think (correct me if im wrong, the ecu has to reprogram itself as i disconnected the battery to change the plugs.
i noticed when i quickly punch the gas, i can hear an air suck noise.
i dont have a CAI so i didnt think that was too normal. upon further inspection
i found the air hose
off the air box is cracked in a couple of the ribs. i macgyvered
it (duct tape fix outside the ghetto) for the time being. im hoping thats all there is
to the problems after i replace that. it still seems like its not burning all the fuel.
i changed my oil, filter, and air filter within the last week. my
thermostat was changed and i had a coolant flush a month ago
my ac seems to be making waterfalls of condensation in this 95 degree weather. kind of baffeling
that delivering (stop and go) all day long my car starts with no hesitation.
after it sits an hour or more is when it doesnt want to start.
if its just the air hose my theory is at first, the plastic is firm and
the crack(s) are open. the engine bay heats up once the car
is running and the plastic warms and becomes pliable closing itself
off mostly. the hose cools afterwards and im back to close to no start.
im sure im due for an alternator and waterpump @ 130,000 miles and
when i do that, i need to buy the $50 pimpshit belt here @ crsx to have
dotted my i's and crossed my t's. i just keep thinking i probably need a new
timing chain tensioner. maybe i jumped timing trying to start on fumes..
idk @ this point. im outta $ and patience. but alas, it runs...
for now.

im losing my mind on this. not starting again.
any ideas other than what ive done? is it possible the fuel
pressure regulator is bad on cold start? maybe theres a vaccum
hose or something that could be bad? i know the starter is good.
it completely turns over. i just bought ngk laser iridiums, so
i know the spark plugs are good...i just really need some idea. help anyone?

Get a can of starter fluid and see if it will start. It will help u determine if it is a fuel problem or not

besides air, fuel and spark an engine needs compression and timing to run.

well, its running and starting without fail for now.
as far as timing its running properly. i think my clutch master
cylinder is on its way out. that being said i found pumping the clutch
a couple of times makes it start everytime. i dont think the crap gas
helped anything run well, so perhaps that was an issue as well.
im gonna sea foam it when my gas gets low this week, then clean
the tb. i wish i wouldve figured it out earlier. oh well. thank you all
for your help.

every time i think this craps fixed, it still is f"d.
i am back to cranking with no start. i sprayed starter
fluid in the intake/tb, and still nothing.a possibly
important note on my last tank of gas i seafoamed
my fuel and the bottom part of the full tank i have is the end of
that. i smell gas after trying to crank it. the engine turns
over completely, just seems like theres no spark. assuming
when i pull the plugs ground and still have no spark, where
should i start? ignition? tps? help please!

okay..i just got it started by furiously
pumping the gas pedal. any idea on a permanent
fix? im thinking either i got trash from the bottom of my
tank initially, then it settled again, then i seafoamed it
and it and the crap clogged the injectors. OR my fuel pump
is in its dying process. anyone know if pumping the
pedal build fuel pressure? or possibly push trash outta
the injectors? im baffled and stumped.
