Picked some two amanos and 6 zebra nerites (no pictures taken). My Badis was being very photogenic today so I took a BUNCH of him lol.

What the crap is going on Matt!!!! How are they all dead but the badi is acting like a boss?

Why are you wanting a wave maker for your tank?

pandjpudge
03-04-2012, 04:57 PM
Beats me but did the usual WC today, crypts are still making a fucking mess. But yeah I'm rather clueless whey both amanos died and half of snails.

The MP to push water around, I noticed a lot of shit the filters should be picking up but they are sitting on the sand. Since the tank took a shit I have to vac a lot of stuff.

pandjpudge
03-04-2012, 06:48 PM
Yeah I'm asking if it would help move shit around in my current tank. I noticed my bottom was littered with melted leaves instead of being sucked into the filter. I took off all my prefilters and running the filters at wide open lol. I'm so close to taking a heavy rock like object to the tank.

Take out the filter sponge and the media out of the 20 and place that on the left side running full throttle. Keep everything in the 50 running full and lower the water level

I would say it would help. Stick it on nutrient export mode and it will lift the detritus off the bottom and into your filters.

update on the tanks.. puffer is eating mighty good. that guy and the trigger are beasts, while the tang just picks up the scraps of these guys.

with the edge.. all my HC died off. finally got around to pulling them all out of the tank. I went ahead and picked up a couple moss balls as well. i had 5 stems of rotala, so i trimmed them all in half and thirds and replanted all the stems. only thing keeping me from buying my co2 setup is debating the idea if i want to keep shrimp or not. ahh decisions decisions...

Phil you can use co2 and shrimps. If you do the fancy set up with ph controllers and what not you could keep baller shrimps by keeping the ph low like in the 6.5 range.

yea, not baller here. not dropping more cash on a pH controller. all i want to worry about with the co2 is when it turns on/off with the solenoid. so i guess what we learned here today is that the direct inverse to :ralph: status is :phil: status

Wait are you going with a manual set up where you turn off and on the co2? Or one with a timer and automatic? The thing with shrimps is keeping the conditions constant too much of a swing and you'll have a mass grave.

Cherries/green/yellow/snowballs are the more forgiving ones. Tigers and crs/cbs/etc require a bit more. Like low ph and cooler waters

no no. im going with a regulator/solenoid setup. i was gonna go with the ASA on/off valve (from jaggedfury on PT) and keep the co2 on for 24/7 (even though it's pointless), but im just gonna go with a regulator/solenoid setup instead

If you're running 24/7 you'll need something to gas out the co2 at night unless you're running low numbers. Your plants will suck up oxygen at night so if there's a lack of it. Fish/shrimp may be dead by the morning assuming you do crazy with stocking lol

where do ghost shrimp fall? :D lol

May pickup a solenoid and go on a timer

My current concept was co2 injection constantly (lower level, confirming its safe during the day) and turn on the air wand at night to release the co2/agitate the water. This seemed like a good idea to me and seemed like it'd be similar in concept to buying a solenoid and timing it on and off (on during the day and off at night). I know it'd be a waste of co2 at night but from what I'm reading is the co2 will last a WHILE :dontknow:

yea it was either having an airstone run on a timer too, or try and keep the bps at a low rate or something. but then again, i would just be wasting co2, so i tossed that idea pretty quick. i dont wanna be messing around with the damn sensitive needle valve every time i need to turn on the co2. and even that, i'm not always home to turn on the co2 at the same time every night.

Ghost shrimp = FOOD. Nothing more.

oh yea, i still give him seaweed pieces. i drop a seaweed sheet on a clip for the tang to munch on while i feed the other guys. even though the tang goes after their scraps, he still eats the seaweed. the other guys don't touch the seaweed sheets at all. but when i tried dropping in those algae pellets for the tang, those other guys still eat it

Ya very new to it though. Was low light in my currently running 10g with no co2 and a HOB filter with no ferts or anything

I may get a solenoid later but a cheap $8 outlet timer is what I'm going with for right now :o. Solenoid will come in the future I'm sure, or atleast depending on how often the tank empties

The 20g I'm setting up currently will be high light, co2, ferts and root tabs, with some driftwood :). All of this is new to me so I expect to be raising quite a bit of algae as well :laughat:

I'm waiting til the tank is setup pretty well how I'd like (or atleast have all equipment in and running reliably) with the driftwood in place, some plants, and cycled before moving fish in. They're doing pretty well in the 10g now so no major rush :)

:rotfl: they're cheap while I learn and experiment :o

And I understand shrimp are early on to go if something goes out of whack, so hopefully a half decent indicator of a problem as well

I'll move on to nicer shrimp later but want the 20g to be pretty well setup first and I kinda like how ghost shrimp look :o haha

Lol at liking clear shrimp. Shrimps are the last thing you want to add to a tank. It needs to be well established before adding them. At least step up to cherries, a $1/shrimp it's pretty affordable and they breed in almost all tank conditions. Much cheaper than my original colony at 3/shrimp and would probably grade out low too.

Lol I'm not telling you to go get some king kong shrimps. Just nice grade crs or tigers lol. Look at seachem if you want name brand/something you should be able to grab locally. Root medic sells fertz and probably others on pt.

Is red lobster expensive? I've never been to one and always thought it was a kinda "cheap" place to eat. Not a baller I just like rarer things which isnt hard living in louisiana lol. Been ahead of the aquarium game for ages here. Lfs wanted 3/cherry, that's crack prices! Those prices are from the early 2000s when shrimp first hit the market. At least drop it to 2/shrimp, they'll still make money.

oh yea, i still give him seaweed pieces. i drop a seaweed sheet on a clip for the tang to munch on while i feed the other guys. even though the tang goes after their scraps, he still eats the seaweed. the other guys don't touch the seaweed sheets at all. but when i tried dropping in those algae pellets for the tang, those other guys still eat it

and yea, i havent bought any ghost shrimp at all. i feed them frozen mysis and silversides

You dont need to. If they are eating frozen, no need for live food.

I just use live to get them onto frozen. Which all 4 of my predators are. Now I just freeze the live for snacks later down the line.

wait, how do you have your co2 hooked up to a timer without a solenoid?

nice! cant wait to see that 20g. i'm not in a rush to put fauna in mine either, so i'm just getting the tank where i want it to be first.
Oh I'm just thinking of adding a solenoid later - for now I'll be using an air wand to agitate the surface and leak the co2 at night and during the day the lights and co2 will come on with a different timer

Ya I'm reading not rushing is the way to go for sure, is yours all running? Pics? :)

Lol at liking clear shrimp. Shrimps are the last thing you want to add to a tank. It needs to be well established before adding them. At least step up to cherries, a $1/shrimp it's pretty affordable and they breed in almost all tank conditions. Much cheaper than my original colony at 3/shrimp and would probably grade out low too.
lol fine cherry shrimp will come in the future. First the ghosts are getting added to the 20g to ensure all is well

My biggest issue is the hardness like I told you before :face:. But I still have 5, started with 5. How fast do they grow to adult size? Either there's been lots of big molts or there were a couple that died and a couple more showed up

If they are fed well they'll grow quickly and molt often. Dead look different from a molt shell, trust me I know this too well recently. Molts are usually a milky white clear , while a dead shrimp you'll still see stuff like organs.

Hardness isn't much of an issues with the easy shrimps. The picky ones youll have serious issues with the harder water and molting. Try to find shrimps im your area or get super young ones to adjust to new conditions

It's all about nutrient minimization. Protein skimmers, refugiums, gfo reactors for removing phosphate, et. Pristine water quality is a must with SW tanks, I know this too well :fuu:

In reef tanks, the key is reducing nutrients so algae can't use it. Skimmers, RODI, GFO reactors, carbon dosing, refugiums and turf scrubbers all help to do this.

Getting some SRS microbubbles in the scorp tank. Need to play around with my ATO cause when my water level drops too much, I'm getting bubbles in the return chamber from water dropping too far.

Ian - I figured out why my LPS are dying off. I haven't been feeding much since I got my angler. My levels are fine so its not that. Talking with my LFS guy he thinks the same thing. I've been feeding like crazy since Friday so hopefully I can force a comeback.

NirvanaandTool
03-06-2012, 11:44 AM
Yea but they still probably get some food out of the water column from your fish feedings.

Mine were fine til I got the angler and stopped feeding normally. Now that I just stick feed, they get 0 food.

Yeah, that's why I don't target that often. I tend to turn the pumps on when there are some particulates in the column so that the LPS can catch it.

NirvanaandTool
03-06-2012, 11:49 AM
Turn the MP40 on feeding mode - that helps.

I hope I can save some of the stuff. My acans are looking crappy as of this weekend now.

If I lose them, I dont think I'll replace them. Anything that requires target feeding is a pain now that I'm just stick feeding everything in my tanks.

Inlimbo87
03-06-2012, 11:57 AM
I just put the RKL on standby which turns all my pumps off to feed. Once I've replaced the Koralia with another vortech, I'll use the feed mode.

Sucks about the LPS, have you seen any flesh receding or are they just closed up with poor coloration? I believe that was my down fall with acans (lack of target feeding)

A little bit of both depending on the coral. Lobos flesh receding, acans closing up, merletti completely closed up.

Yeah there was a sump, no powerheads, there should have been one but I didn't get around to getting (was too cheap), it was cool though because I got the volitan lion fish to eat dried krill, basically the sting ray would move the water around giving the false sense that the dried krill were moving, and the lion fish would eat the krill, I guess he liked it.

It's an option, are you sure that hypo alone would rid the tank of ich completely? My concern would be that, by not leaving it fallow, the ich could still survive and reinfect later.

Problem with 1 is leaving both in an uncycled 10g for 6 weeks. Seems like a recipe for disaster to me?

Other than appearance he seems ok. Eating like a champ like usual.
I'm about 75% its ich. A lionfish expert seems to think its ich. The dots in the eyes are what is pointing to it.

Hypo if done correctly will clear ich completely. You need at least 2 weeks @ 1.008. I'm going to aim for at least 3.

Hypo sounds like the best option. My friend is going to keep my macro in his mantis shrimp tank while I hypo and the coral will be fresh water dipped tomorrow.

:rain:

Might throw some of the silk plants that are hella stained from who knows what and throw a piece of driftwood in there. Let it settle and go crazy with some easy plants.

Round 2.. :ca: if I'm lucky, more Le plants to replace the ones I'm tossing.

To the SW crew, what are you guys using primarily for clean up crew? I just came to the realization that my CUC is lacking immensely - I currently have a small handful of crabs and probably 5 or so various snails. Thinking about picking up one of these packs : http://reefcleaners.org/index.php?page=shop.product_details&product_id=253&category_id=20&flypage=flypage.tpl&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=34 and a couple emerald crabs for the bubble algae.

wow that's dirt cheap for what you get. my LFS was charging me like $100 for a 90g CUC package and its nowhere near half of that. i think the package only included 40 snails, 10 nerites, 10 hermits and 3 crabs or something like that.

my CUC now are my hands because of the puffer :crying:

Will do.
Hope it works out. DD or QT for anything new. With my luck I can't risk no QT apparently.

Whatever is leftover from the mantis lol

I prefer mostly snails. Hermits get on my nerves honestly. I see them picking at corals too often.

Honestly I'd downsize the CUC. I don't like the packs sized to the tank you have cause i feel like once they get to cleaning they start to die off. I'd go with something sized for a 55 to be honest. I dont like throwing in 100s of snails

hey matt, you ever get surface film on the water in your tank? how do i get rid of it without using an airstone?

Spoolin4Door

The film can be caused by a lot of things including oil from your hands from reaching in the tank and fish food. Typically surface agitation will remove it but not always. If it's really bothering you that much I've known people who use a paper towel to get rid of it.
