A possible solution to the AC on/off

I've read complains about the AC turning on and not turning at the correct times or when we want it. Here's a fix to that problem. You may have full control over your AC.

BUT this article is directed to Civics, so hopefully since our cars (RSXs) were built upon that flatform, maybe it might work on our cars.

http://madstatic.com/2k1civic/diy/acdisable/

Someone give it a shot and see if it helps.

I just tried it. When u turn it on wait for the recirculation to blink than the ac to blink. Worked like a charm. Don't know if it affects the Auto Climate control. Haven't tried to reverse it yet.

I tried this a month ago and it didin't work. The recirculation light did blink. Do you have to hold it longer after that?

How did you get it to work?

What you will need: Two Fingers

Time Needed: 10 seconds.

Annoyed with how you can't turn off the A/C when you turn to defog? Here's the override (realize that A/C expediates the defog process).

These steps are taken from a discussion thread on 2k1civic.com

Turn Car Off
Turn Temperature Knob To Full Blue (All the way to the left - Counter-Clock Wise)
Turn Vent Knob To Off (All the way to the left - Counter-Clock Wise)
Hold Down Air Recirculation Button As Well As A/C Button
Keep Both Buttons Depressed and Start Car
Keep Both Buttons Depressed for 7 Seconds
*AC LIGHT SHOULD BLINK*

You will now have control of your A/C regardless of what setting you are in, to revert back, simply repeat the procedue.

Make sure u hold on to the two buttons before u turn on the car. Hold it till after the AC button blinks. The recirculation button blinks first than the AC. Make sure ur not holding on the Defrosting button for the rear window.

Advantage is you can turn the AC off to defrost your windshield. Ac is faster, but i like just using plain old heat. It was gettin to me thank god for CLUBRSX for all these fixes. First the Bass fix now this. KEEP IT COMING

man, that AC thingy bothers me for years. I had a Escort before it has same dumb design. I gotta try that... So after A/C light blinks then it stops work until you change it back right? How about air recirculation button, does it stop working too?
Thanks

Always having the AC on seems like a bad design. I know that AC can remove moisture from the air, but seems like - unless the air is reheated after moisture removal - the air hitting the windshield will be saturated anyhow, by way of the fact that the air was cooled to the point of condensation. (unless, I suppose, the coils in the evaporator are much much colder than the air leaving the AC.. which I guess may be the case. Though, you do not want the condensed water to freeze on the coils. Ice is a very good insulator)

I know from empirical evidence that having AC on helps occaisonally. But heating up the windshield sometimes works well too.

Anyone here know if cooled air is passed back through the heater when defogging, or does the cold and hot air mix near the vent?

Yeah, check page 21-8 of your service manual. This is the self diagnosis function. Codes blink thru the rec light after the first two blinks. Function ends when you turn the ignition off.

Groovy.

So does the auto climate control still work? Will the AC still come on when you place both the vent and the fan in the auto position?

Hey Thanks! I wondered how I could disable the ac when the defog was on. You think they would give you the option, instead of having to go through that.

Yeah, I don't understand why they designed it that way either. On my wife's '01 CR-V, it automatically turns on the A/C when you turn it to defrost, but you can override it by just hitting the A/C button to turn it back off.

TypeSZH,

I must be doing something wrong here. The same thing happened as with the first time I tried this.

The recirculation light will blink 6 times, but the a/c light stays off. How did you get it to blink?

so every time you shut your car off it resets back to the original settings? or in other words you have to do this every time to get the ac to full manual control?

Man i don't know. Let me repeat.

Turn all knobs all the way to the left.

Before the key is in the ignition(this is how i did it)

Hold down BOTH Recirculation and AC button. Make sure its the button to the most left and the middle one. NOT THE DEFROSTING BUTTON.

Turn the car on to two (ll) . The recirculation blinks ONCE and the AC blinks once.

That is wut happen i n my car. Maybe it blink more. But the ac blink once and i let it go.

Motor,

Can you offer any insight on this? I know I specifically held down the recirc and a/c buttons prior to inserting the key.

Is this actualy working or do you just assume its disabling it? Because the blinking lights could just be the Climate Control diagnostic mode.

I've had this done on mine for over a month now. So to answer your question, yes, it does work.

I was able to get my to take. The directions say to turn the knob all the way to the left so the vent is closed. In the RSX all the way to the left is Auto. Turn it one notch up. The vent won't be closed but that's the notch that allowed it to work.

Now that it's working..When I put the defroster on ..the AC turns on but I can use the AC button to shut it off.
