BEFORE YOU CREATE A THREAD: Basic Mod Guide for Noobs

I'm really bored and I've seen so many "What intake/exhaust/headers Should I Get?" threads, so I figured I could make a list of popular brands with pro's and con's for base model RSX's as an attempt to help people out. This will include 5-Speed and Autos..Prices are based on CRSX Store prices. Feel free to correct me with any incorrect information.

**EDIT**:
06/21/06 - Exhaust Sound Clip link added *Thanks to 06 MM DC5.
06/21/06 - Hondata IMG Info Added.
06/23/06 - Type-S Exhaust & Race Header info added to *NOTES*
07/03/06 - Motor Mounts/ESMM info added with links.
07/08/06 - More Race Header brands added to list.
09/10/06 - Tires added.
03/04/07 - Strut Bars added.
03/12/07 - Torque/Engine Dampers added to list.

**Coming Soon**: Any Suggestions????

Tires:
Pro's: Way better traction, acceleration, and feel. (I think everyone will agree that our stock Michelin's suck.)
Con's: None

Too many brands and prices to list.

Cold Air Intakes (CAI):
Pro's: Best gains for intakes
Con's: harder installation, risk of hydrolock (Only if COMPLETELY submerged in water, BUT VTEC-ing in a big puddle wouldn't be smart either), more expensive, lose throttle response.

AEM CAI: Both 5-Speed and Auto's
$250.00 (You can by a bypass valve separately, which reduces risk of hydrolocking.)
Injen CAI: Both 5-Speed and Auto's
$249.00 (CRSX Edition, only difference is that it comes in a special Gunmetal color)
$263.00 (Original)

Short Ram Intakes (SRI):
Pro's: Easier Installation, cheaper than CAI, less/no risk of hydrolock, good throttle response
Con's: high risk of heatsoak (Power loss due to hot air), power gains only when in cold weather.

AEM SRI: Both 5-Speed and Auto's
$166.00
$295.00 (AEM V2 SRI An upgrade of the original AEM SRI, supposedly more gains, more expensive.)
Injen SRI: Both 5-Speed and Auto's
$189.00 (CRSX Edition, again, you get the cool special Gunmetal color)
$200.00 (Original)
Fujita SRI: Both 5-Speed and Auto's
$161.00

IceBox:
Pro's: Good Gains throughout mid-range, easy installation, no/very little risk of heatsoak or hydrolock
Cons: Gains not as good as CAI, expensive

Comptech: 5-Speed Only
$295.00

Exhausts: Only huge difference is sound. Exhausts fit both 5-Speed and Auto.

Exhaust Sound clip between Stock and Greddy Spectrum Elite:
***Thanks to DC5.Exhil for the clip and reminding me to update this***

*Got any more sound clips? Let me know and give me links and I'll post up!*

*NOTE*:
You can also buy a Type-S exhaust system if you:

A) Get a Type-S Race Header.

or

B) Get an auto shop to custom make an adapter for you.

With Type-S exhaust systems, you have a wider variety than what's listed..

This list is for the base model specific exhaust systems:

Comptech:
$700.00
DC Sports:
$454.00
HKS:
$525.00 (Hi-Power Exhaust)
Fujitsubo: (Not in site but also popular)
$560.00 (Estimate)

Shorty Headers: Both Auto and 5-Speed
Pro's: Emissions friendly, street legal
Con's: Little gains

*NOTE*:
Some buy Test Pipes for the shorty headers, this means more gains but eliminates the cat which makes it not good for emissions. (Megan test pipes - $100)

Comptech:
$535.00
Strup Performance:
$175-$250.00
DC Sports:
$312-$470.00
PIT:
$268.00
Megan:
$125

Race Headers:
Pro's: Larger power gains, effin' cool
Con's: NOT Street legal or Emissions friendly.

*NOTE*:
Many ask why, but it's because it eliminates the cat.
Type-S race headers DO fit the base as long as you have a Type-S catback exhaust.

Comptech:
$905.00 (You must also buy Adapter for exhaust - $145.00)
DC Sports:
$386.00 (Ceramic)
$470.00 (Stainless Steel [SS])
Strup Performance:
$400.00
Toda Racing:
$1,125.00 (w/o JDM Sway Bar)
$1,250.00 (w/ JDM Sway Bar)

*NOTE*
The Toda Racing Race Header will not fit without the JDM sway bar

Hondata Intake Manifold Gasket (IMG):
Pro's: Increase in power & torque for a cheap, affordable price.
Con's: Gains are not as high for our base models as the Type-S due to it being 70% plastic...

Hondata IMG - $55.00

Motor Mounts:
Pro's: Less/no wheel hop, prevents cracking on your Race Header, less/no engine movement, better launches.
Con's: More vibrations (Should eventually die down), harder install.

Innovative Motor Mounts: http://forums.clubrsx.com/showthread.php?t=373105 (Install And Review!)
$270.00 (Street Kit)
$279.00 (Race Kit)

Energy Suspension Engine Mount Inserts (ESMM's): http://forums.clubrsx.com/showthread...highlight=ESMM (ESMM Review!)
Pro's: Almost same Pro's as real motor mounts, cheaper.
Con's: Worse vibrations, more noise, more prone to tearing, some installation problems, not true motor mounts.

ESMM - $28.00 (WoW!)

Strut Bars:
Pro's: Strengthens chasis for improved handling, another great first mod since Base models never came w/ one.
Con's: None that I can think of..

Spoon
Mugen
Cusco
DC Sports
Tein
J's Racing

Torque/Engine Dampers:
Pro's: Less/no wheel hop, Less/no engine movement, Better launches
Con's: More vibrations

Spoon
Ingalls
J's Racing

Add more to the list if you want. And again, if I'm incorrect with some of the info, feel free to correct me and I'll edit the list.

Base Modding for Dummies

Since there are a million threads about mods for the base and what will fit/won’t fit I decided to make a post describing just about everything you need to know about All Motor modding for your base 5spd and base auto. Enjoy.

Intake

The first performance mod most people suggest to get is an intake. The four most typical types people buy are…

CAI (Cold Air Intake)
SRI (Short Ram Intake)
AEM V2 SRI
Icebox (does not work on the auto)

One of the common questions someone will ask is…Do I have to buy one specifically made for the Base, or will one for the Type-S fit as well? And the obvious answer is buy the one made for the base, why else would they make one specifically for the base?

Will my car hydrolock if I buy a CAI?

And the answer to that is no, unless you enjoy driving through lakes or puddles that reach your knees. In order for your car to actually hydrolock the intake filter must be completely submerged in water. If you are still scared of hyrdolocking though I’d suggest buying a SRI, but that brings me to my next point of heatsoak.

With the SRI you eliminate your fear of hydrolocking and instead you get introduced to a nifty thing called heat soak. On a hot or humid day you can actually lose power with a SRI or the V2.

Also available for the Base 5spd (does not fit the base auto) is the Comptech Icebox. This product looks similar to the stock airbox, but will give you performance gains.

Overall, if you are looking for the most power your best bet would be to buy a CAI.

Here is a list of all the intakes available for the base (sorry if I missed any)

AEM CAI (Base Auto and Base 5spd)
AEM SRI (Base Auto and Base 5spd)
AEM V2 (Base Auto and Base 5spd)
Injen CAI (Base Auto and Base 5spd
Injen SRI (Base Auto and Base 5spd)
Comptech Icebox (Base 5spd only)
(May be some others, but these are definitely the most common)

Header

The next mod I would suggest getting is a header (and it is header not headers, we only have a 4 cylinder engine).

There are two types:

Shorty header
Race header

If you are worried about breaking the law then the shorty header is the route you should take. With the Jackson Racing race header, however, you can weld a hi-flo cat to it to make it “legal.”

Alright the one question people continuously ask about the race header is, how will it fit my base since it says it will only work with the Type-S?

There are 2 ways to make it fit your base…

1.) Buy a Type-S exhaust. The piping length is different for the base/type-s and the header will only fit with a type-s exhaust

2.) Have an exhaust shop make you an adapter to fit the header with your base exhaust. (Cost is around $50)

Brands:

DC Sports
Comptech
Jackson Racing
Strup
Megan Racing
(once again there are other brands out there, but these are most common)

Exhaust

Finally, you got the exhaust. I would say this is probably the most common mod. There really isn’t a whole lot to say about exhausts, except they definitely change the tone of your car and eliminate the tiny stock exhaust tip.

The main question is always “Will an exhaust made for the Type-S fit my base? And what do I have to do to make it fit?”

Well first off the easiest thing to do is actually buy the exhaust specifically made for the base, but if you are interested in getting a race header then definitely buy one for the Type-S (read above for reasons why)

Brands:

Too many to list. Here’s a good place to get you started though

http://forums.clubrsx.com/showthread...xhaust+showoff

Other Mods:

Of course there are other mods besides these, but these are your 3 basic mods to get you started. If you are interested in going further than just I/H/E then most likely you aren't reading this post because you already know this info However if you want to turbo your car, or supercharge it (yes, there isn't one made for the base, but if you are gung-ho you can make it work) then i definately suggest doing some research before jumping into anything.

Good luck and Happy Modding!!

There's way too much info to cover.... believe me I've TRIED to make a sticky. It's just that most of the guys that want to boost have no idea what they're doing, so it's pointless to explain why x part is better than y or how they differ in the first place.

ok I can understand that Keith, however I think it would be nice for basers to know what kits can be made availible with a minimum of pipe fabrication

Add more to the race header portion. There's SSR, BC, Toda, DC Ceramic, DC SS, DC Polished, Strup Polished. Probably a few more I don't know.
