so I just took a break from my engine...cant seem to get the timing chain on the gears , engine is at TBC I belive ...pretty rusted from Canadian winters but it was when I took the stock cams out this morning. installed new rockers cams ect... and just cant seem to time it! some tips...do I remove the tensioner? I have only ever timed a mazda and that was belt so it was easier.
removing the chain tensioner will make it easier on yourself
spin the motor so piston #1 is at TDC
when you have confirmed you are at TDC the timing marks [punch marks/dots] on the cam gears should be both pointing up, the lines on the cam gears should be pointing towards each other and one of the timing marks on the crank sprocket should be pointing directly at the arrow on the block
there are holes on the back of the cam pulse plates they should line up with the holes on the #5 cam cap, once they are you can stick some punches through the holes and it will lock the cams in place
take off the chain tensioner
now you can line up the chain on the timing marks on the gears and crank sprocket
the chain will have 3 links that are darker in color than the rest of the links on the chain
line up the darker links to the corresponding marks on the cam gears and crank sprocket; the timing marks should be lined up where it will be in the center of the darker links
install the tensioner, take the pin out, spin motor a few times, make sure there is no slack on the intake side of the chain and check for chain slap or any other issues
if there are no apparent issues your motor should be timed correctly
